3 Chairs Message Welcome tothe annual conference ofthe Special Interest Group onbiometrics&electronic Signatures (SIG BIOSIG) of the Gesellschaft für Informatik(GI) e.v. The SIG BIOSIG was founded as an experts group for the topics of biometric person identification/authenticationand electronic signatures and its applications. Over the last seven years the annual conference in strongpartnership with the Competence Center for Applied Security Technology (CAST) established awell known national forum for experts from industry, science and representatives of the national governmental bodies workinginthese areas. The BIOSIG 2008 conference is jointlyorganized by SIG BIOSIG, CAST, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the EUproject 3D Face. Theprogram committeeacceptedfullscientificpapersstrongly alongthe LNIguidelines within ablinded scientific reviewprocess. Furthermore, the programcommittee has created averyinteresting program includingselected contributions of interest forthe outlined scope of this conference. 4 BIOSIG 2008 Biometrics and Electronic Signatures Day#1: Biometric Border Control Thursday, 11 th September 2008 Multibiometric reference data insufficient qualityisused withineurope and beyond to verify the identityofpersons at borders against the claimed identitywithinbiometric (travel) documents and/or identifyingcriminals in certain real life scenarios. Different applicationscenarios demand for high reliabilityofverificationand identification. Thus multimodal high speed biometric systems are needed. Within the workshop the impacts and possible scenarios for border control is addressed toidentifycurrent possibilities, drawbacks, and future development of biometric systems in bordercontrol processes. In this context the state-of-the-art research in 2D and 3Dface recognitionapproaches is discussed. Day#2: Federated Identity Management Friday, 12 th September 2008 While electronic identity theft becomes anincreasinglypressingproblem, whichaccordingtothe IdentityTheft Resource Center causes anannual damage upto$55 Billionfor businesses and consumers, there are many national and domain specific approaches for more secure identificationand authenticationusing electronic identitycards for example. These approaches however donot yet seemtobeapplicable in cross domainbusiness processes and hence may fail to solve the electronic identity theft probleminaglobal perspective. Therefore the workshop discusses methods and systems for secure identity management with aspecial emphasis on aspects arising in cross domainscenarios.
