2 SON and SDN: Friends or Foes? Future Networks 2014 (part of the Zukunft der Netze - Conference Series) organized by the ITG-Committee (FA) 5.2. Communication Net - works and Systems The research and development of future networks is currently dominated by two major trends: On the one hand, Self-Organizing Networks (SON) promise to allow for a flexible and decentralized integration and control of network components. On the other hand, Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) concepts introduce a centralized control of network components to allow for effective implementation of high-end Quality of Service targets in heterogeneous environments. In previous conferences of the Future Networks series, either SON or SDN were in the focus. The 2014 edition of the conference aims to shed a light on how these two major trends interact with each other: where do they complement each other, where do they compete against each other when building the networks of the future? The presentations on the conference will address the following questions: Self-organizing/Self-optimizing networks and protocols: experiences from the field and new research trends Software-defined networking architectures, protocols and implementations: which bottlenecks have been and which still have to be removed? What is the trade-off between centralized vs. decentra lized control? Integrating SON, SDN and NFV in one network archi tecture Logically centralized: SDN controller architectures and performance Open Flow-based implementations and performance Self-organization and Software-Defined Networking in Cyber Physical Systems (sensor-/actor networks) SON and SDN standards and interoperability issues Boundary conditions This year s edition of the Future networks conference series will be jointly organized and co-located with the workshop SON for Future Networks ( organized by the EU project SEMAFOUR with an invited talk from the CELTIC+ project SHARING. It is expec ted that the participants will attend both events. Due to the partially international background of the participants, the conference Future networks will be held in English in The SEMAFOUR workshop will take place one day before the Future networks conference. It will address topics such as Multi-RAT / Multi-layer SON Functions and Inte grated SON Management and Operation. Presentations for the Future networks conference will complement these topics with presentations on SDN (and its combination/interaction with SON). Panel The program foresees as a final highlight of the program a panel discussion, in which different viewpoints from manufacturers, operators and content providers are addressed under the headline of the conference SDN and SON. Friends or foes? Based on the presentations of the conference and the professional background of the distinguished panel speakers we hope for a lively (even controversial) discussion. Payment Payment for registration, including bank charges and processing fees, must be made in Euro. The conference fee has to be fully paid in advance. Confirmation of registration will be sent after full payment has been received by VDE-Conference Services. Cancellation In case of cancellation, provided that written notice is received at the VDE-Conference Services before August 28, 2014 (except authors registration), the registration fee will be fully refunded less a handling fee of 30,00 Euro. After August 27, 2014 no refund will be made. Proceedings will then be sent to the registrant after the conference. There can be no reductions for late arrival, early departure or any meals not taken.
