TEACHING al Leadership Present Director, Listening and Spoken Language Graduate Training Program The Listening and Spoken Language program is a transdisciplinary approach to graduate student training with a campus-based practicum site (Sound Beginnings) to promote increased collaboration and understanding of services provided within and across the disciplines of speech/language pathology, audiology and listening and spoken language deaf education programs Present Director, or Hard of Hearing Endorsement Training Program The Listening and Spoken Language or Hard of Hearing Endorsement program is for currently licensed teachers or speech-language pathologists who are non-degree-seeking professionals, but who would like additional training in serving children who are DHH in the classroom setting. Students in the Endorsement program take graduate level classes in listening and spoken language development, and participate in guided hands-on practicum experiences Director, Sound Beginnings of Cache Valley Sound Beginnings is an early intervention and preschool program located on the USU campus. The focus of this program is for children with hearing loss to receive intensive early intervention services that emphasize the development of spoken language. Sound Beginnings serves children from birth through age 6 through a variety of program options that are designed to increase auditory awareness and speech/language development. Courses Taught ComD 6320 Language and Literacy in Children who are DHH (3 credit hours) This graduate level course examines literacy development in young children who are DHH, including the definition, characteristics, and theoretical aspects of emergent literacy; and their application at home and at school to facilitate the development of literacy skills. Students discuss the various philosophical views for teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as educational placement options and teaching techniques. Students also review the anatomy of the ear and principles of hearing. Utah State University, Department of Communicative Disorders and. Fall 2011; Fall 2012; Fall ComD 5070 Speech Science (3 credit hours) (co-teach) This course is designed for upper division undergraduate speech-language pathology and audiology majors. The focus is on providing a conceptual framework from which to view normal and disordered speech perception and production. This course identifies and explores the clinical measurement of perception and production characteristics of the respiratory, laryngeal, articulatory, resonatory, and auditory system events. This course provides the foundation of normal perception and production characteristics and measurement values that are the point of comparison when dealing with disordered function across populations and the lifespan, including demonstration of instrumental measurement. Utah State University, Department of Communicative Disorders and. Fall 2011; Fall 2012; Fall 2013.

10 ComD 5330 Aural Rehabilitation Undergraduate course to discuss the ramifications of hearing loss in children and adults, and to discuss rehabilitative audiological techniques and programs. Modules developed were: 1) Hearing Technologies: Understanding, using, and troubleshooting hearing technology (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices). 2) Language and Literacy: Implementing evidence-based strategies for promoting speech, language, and literacy development using an LSL approach. 3) Listening and Learning: Enhancing listening skills development and auditory learning strategies in the preschool classroom setting. 4) Collaborating with LSL Professionals: Increasing interdisciplinary collaboration among professionals who serve pre-school children who are DHH and who use LSL for communication and academic development.

12 Modules included recorded powerpoint lectures, several video attachments, including segments depicting experiences and recommendations of children and parents, video demonstrations of LSL teaching strategies, a teacher in-service training specific to having a child who is DHH in the general education classroom, a video demonstration of a hearing aid listening check, and others. The modules also included teacher handouts, articles, other written references, as well as an online quiz at the end of each module. The modules were approved as a continuing education option available to all educators through the Utah State Office of OnTrack Professional Learning Center. Participants who completed all four modules earned either (1) USOE Professional Development Credit or (14) Re-licensure points.
