Name: Phone #: Name: Phone #: Textbook Online Readings Description Objectives Required: Event Management for Tourism, Cultural, Business, and Sporting Events by Lyn Van Der Wagen and Brenda R. Carlos, 2005, Pearson Prentice Hall. Occasionally readings may be made available online that you will be expected to read before class. Foundation in planning, organizing, marketing, and producing special events and conferences. Functions and strategies necessary are covered for effective event management. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: describe and apply the concepts and processes involved in planning and staging an event prepare marketing, promotion, budgeting, and risk management materials for an event describe the aspects of protocol, leadership, and staffing for events explain various safety and crowd management considerations for events describe aspects of monitoring, control, and evaluation for events explain issues related to concept and design of an event describe trends and career opportunities in the event planning industry Instructional Methodology Because of the interactive nature of this course, a variety of instructional methodology will be used including, but not limited to: lecture, group discussion, group activities, videos, guest speakers, and exploration activities. Assignments & Grading The assignments in this class are specifically designed to complement the knowledge you learn in the classroom. The assignments should give you an idea of the types of activities and work that event and conference planners do. You will be evaluated based on your participation in class and performance on assignments and exams. Points Participation: Called on randomly 5 times (10 points each) 50 Mid-Term Exams: Four mid-terms (100 points each, drop lowest 300 score) Final Exam: Mandatory 200 Assignments: Homework Homework Homework Homework Homework 5 50 Total: 1,000
2 Grade Breakdown - Grading in the course is traditional and will be done on plus/minus scale based on the total number of points you receive where: A B C D A B C D A B C D- < 600 F Policies Class Times - Class will begin promptly at 12:10 pm and go until 1:00 pm. It is expected that you will make every effort to arrive to class on-time. Attendance and Participation - Students who are serious about their education should make every effort to attend classes. Each student will be randomly called upon 5 times during the semester to answer a question or make a comment. If you are called and are not present you will lose 10 participation points each time. If I call on you and you re there, you get the 10 points. Students participating in university-sanctioned events (i.e.; athletics, band, etc.) must provide the instructor with a list of anticipated absences as soon as possible after the start of the semester. It is your responsibility to inform the instructor of any changes in dates. If you miss class due to illness or a family emergency I will need to see a note from a medical professional or other evidence (i.e.; death certificate or obituary). Exams - There will be four midterm exams throughout the semester worth 100 points each and a mandatory final exam worth 200 points. You will be allowed to drop your lowest regular exam score so your midterm exams will total 300 points. These exams will cover the assigned readings, guest speakers, lectures, and any videos. Regular exams will not be cumulative across the semester; they will only cover information since the last exam. However, the final exam will be cumulative. Exams will begin at 12:10 pm. If you miss an exam you will NOT be allowed to make it up, unless you have notified the instructor BEFORE the date of the exam that you were going to miss it. Keep in mind that you can drop your lowest exam score. Classroom Conduct and Expectations - It is important to maximize opportunities for learning. Therefore, all students are expected to be attentive, polite, and not distract the instructor or other students. Private conversations, reading newspapers, coming to class late or leaving early are out of place in a learning environment. If you are disturbing the class or detracting from the learning environment, THE INSTRUCTOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ASK YOU TO LEAVE THE ROOM FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE LECTURE. You are welcome to join the class at the next lecture. You are in college. You will be treated and respected as an adult. Discipline problems are not tolerated. Any discipline problem will be dealt with swiftly and permanently by removing the student from class. Cell Phones, Pagers, PDA's - All electronic devices must be turned off, on mute, or vibrate during class time. If you have a home, family or work situation that requires you to wear a pager or cell phone, please discuss this with the instructor after the first class. If your cell phone or pager goes off during class you will be asked to leave the classroom. Reading Assignments - The reading assignments in Event Management and any other supplemental readings are meant to be completed BEFORE class. Online Expectations - Because some materials for this class are online and information is disseminated online, it is important that you keep up-to-date on the course materials. Accordingly, you should log-on to WebCT at least once a week if not more frequently. The Importance of a College Syllabus - Your college syllabus in ANY college class is a roadmap to success. You should always keep your syllabi with your class notes. Periodic updates will be made to the syllabus in WebCT. Hence, you should check it frequently for changes in dates and topics. Academic Integrity and Plagiarism - Everyone is expected to honor Colorado State University's policy on Academic Integrity found on pages 38 and 39 in the General Catalog which reads as follows: "Instructors are expected to use reasonably practical means of preventing and detecting academic dishonesty. Any
3 student found responsible for having engaged in academic dishonesty will be subject to academic penalty and/or University disciplinary action....examples of academic dishonesty include (but are not limited to): 1) Cheating in the Classroom; 2) Plagiarism, 3) Unauthorized Possession or Disposition of Academic Materials, and 4) Falsification, and 5) Facilitation of Cases of Academic Dishonesty.... If the student admits to engaging in academic dishonesty or if the instructor judges that the preponderance of evidence supports the allegation of academic dishonesty, the instructor may then assign an academic penalty. Examples of academic penalties include receiving a reduced grade for the work, a failing grade in the course, or other lesser penalty as the instructor deems appropriate." If you are caught plagiarizing on ANY assignment or cheating on an exam in RR 460 you will receive an immediate F for that exam or assignment and will not be allowed to retake the exam or revise and resubmit the assignment to improve your grade. According to Dictionary.com, plagiarism means "to use and pass off (the ideas or writings of another) as one's own; to appropriate for use as one's own passages or ideas from (another); or to put forth as original to oneself the ideas or words of another". Beyond that, "plagiarism, a form of intellectual dishonesty, involves unintentionally using someone else's work without properly acknowledging where the ideas came from (the most common form of plagiarism) or intentionally copying someone else's work and passing it off as your own (the most serious form of plagiarism) (Palmquist, 2003, The Bedford Researcher, pp ). Writing and Grammar - It is expected by this point in your academic career that you have developed good writing skills. Consequently, written work is expected to be concise, organized and with minimal errors. Grammar and spelling will be regular criteria for grading. If you do poorly on an assignment, you will not be allowed to revise and resubmit it. You are strongly encouraged to HAVE SOMEONE PROOFREAD YOUR ASSIGNMENTS before you submit them if you have difficulty with grammar and spelling (software-based grammar and spell-checkers don't always catch everything). You are more than welcome to use the services of the CSU Writing Center ( Late Assignments - Assignments are due at the beginning of class, 12:10 pm, on the due date. Ten percent (10%) of the points per working day will be taken off for any assignment turned in late. After 5 working days, it will be recorded as a zero. So, if you miss a class when an assignment is due, but turn in the assignment one week later after class has started at 12:10 pm, it will be worth zero points. Extra Credit - There will be no extra credit allowed in RR 460. All of the assignments, their associated points, and due dates are clearly spelled out here in the syllabus. Whether you choose to come to class, or do all of the assignments and submit them on time is your choice. Assignments will be handed back as soon as they are graded. You can easily see what your grade is at any point in the semester by going into WebCT and clicking on "My Grades". If you are concerned about your grade in RR 460 then you should come see me or the TA as soon as possible. Do not wait until the end of the semester if you are having problems with the lectures, assignments, or exams.
