2 Why Psychology? Psychologists study what people do and how their experience influences their behaviour. Psychology is everywhere: a conflict arises among your friends; your elderly neighbour suffers from Alzheimer s and forgets who you are. What lies at the root of it all? What happens when people form groups? What is love? How do children learn? How does memory work? How does depression develop and what can you do about it? Searching for answers to such questions is what psychologists do. Does this scientific study of human behaviour sound like something for you? If it does, come to Leiden for this broad and challenging programme. 3 A study that combines the heart and mind At Leiden you will receive a broad scientific education. You will learn important psychological skills such as communication, research and diagnostics. Education and research are closely linked. Why choose Leiden University? Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is the oldest university in the Netherlands. Since 1947 the university has offered an excellent programme in psychology. As of September 2013, our Bachelor of Science programme has two versions, an English-language one: the International Bachelor in Psychology (IBP); and a Dutch-language one: Bacheloropleiding Psychologie. The main characteristic of our 3-year bachelor s programme is that it covers virtually all aspects of psychology in its compulsory courses and allows you to choose courses from a range of specialised topics in psychology as well as from other disciplines. Academic and professional skills As a psychologist, you have a sound knowledge of human behaviour and perception. At the start, the programme focuses primarily on theory; later on, the focus shifts to the practical skills you will need in your work as a psychologist. These include diagnostics, research and therapeutic skills. In addition, you will acquire all kinds of academic skills such as independent and critical thinking, analysing data, carrying out and presenting research. You will learn to test statements through research, and you will develop the inquisitive attitude of a scientist. High scientific standard According to a committee of international experts, the research carried out by Leiden psychologists is very good to excellent. This is good news for you, because these researchers will be your teachers! You will be able to benefit from the latest insights in the field. Is this the right programme for you? If you want to study psychology, you naturally have to be interested in people s behaviour. You also should have an analytical and critical mind and an interest in science and psychological research. As research plays an important role in psychology, a student of psychology has to be statistically minded. You will need a good dose of self-discipline, because the programme involves a lot of reading and writing. You have keen powers of observation and are a good listener. But you are also able to distance yourself and remain objective. A feeling for language will come in handy, because you will have to write reports, take part in discussions and formulate logically. 4 Admission Admission takes place through a so-called decentralised selection procedure. This means that there is a limit to the number of students that will be admitted and that the Institute will decide upon the selection. Selection criteria that will be taken into account: wwlevel of education wwlevel of English proficiency wwability in mathematics wwresults of an aptitude test Please note the application deadline is February 15, Student housing We have short-stay (one year) student housing available for eligible students. For more info see: studenthousing.leiden.edu Costs The costs of studying at Leiden University are low compared to many other countries. The tuition fee for the year has not been determined yet; in the year the general tuition fee is 1951 per year for Dutch and EU students, and per year for non-eu students. For details on admission see: bachelors.leiden.edu/psychology/entry-requirements From the dairy of Paul Siegwardt first year student from Germany 09:00 I wake up before 9. I have breakfast with some of my roommates. Then I cycle to the University. 11:15 In the lecture Cognitive Psychology we look at questions like how do we recognise words or how do we turn our thoughts into speech? I like this course, it s a nice mix between philosophy and experiments. 13:00 After the lecture I have a quick lunch at the university. I usually have lunch with other people from Psychology. 13:15 I attend the lecture Biopsychology. How do the nervous system and the hormonal system control our cognition and behaviour? 15:00 I go to study at the main university library. I read some material for the next course tomorrow. 18:00 I go home, get my sport stuff and go to Plexfit, the gym that belongs to the university. I do half an hour rowing, and half an hour running. 19:30 I have dinner with my roommates: today we made some burgers. 21:00 We go to a jazz bar and afterwards to a place where you can play pool. Sometimes we stay at home, organise a movie night or go to a party in a student house. 4

5 The structure of the bachelor s programme In Leiden you will build a sound basis for your career as a psychologist. You will become acquainted with all of the main subdisciplines of psychology and have the opportunity to structure your study in a way that suits you. Electives or a study abroad period will give you added value to what you learn. International Bachelor in Psychology: the programme The IBP programme is a full time programme that takes three years. From the start of the programme in September students will need to be able to devote their full attention to their study. The first year of the programme is called the propaedeuse. This year begins with a coherent overview of the entire field of psychology. You are then offered in-depth knowledge of the various subdisciplines. An important component is research methodology: these courses cover one-quarter of the study credits for the first year. Mode of instruction There are different types of teaching formats: wwlectures typically last 2 hours. To be well prepared you should read the literature in advance. wwwork group sessions are made up of 12 to 24 students. In these sessions you delve deeper into the course material. There is room for discussion. Work groups sessions require active participation and attendance is mandatory. wwin practicals you work on your skills. You will learn interview skills, how to observe, and how to work with statistics computer programmes. Attendance is also mandatory in the practicals. In the first year you will have an average of hours per week. It is a full time study with courses planned throughout the week. You also will spend around 20 hours a week studying independently. 5

6 A scientific quest for the truth behind human behaviour The first year In the first year, you will take twelve courses. Introductory Topics wwintroduction to Psychology wwhistory of Psychology wwpsychology and Science Skills Course wwacademic Skills Tutorial You will learn to further develop your academic writing and presentation skills. The second and third year The second and third year consist of a combination of mandatory courses, electives and specialisation courses. The mandatory subjects taught in the second year provide for more insight into the first year courses. Some courses are aimed at obtaining specific skills that are important for psychologists. In addition to the mandatory courses students take specialisation and elective courses in the second and third year. Possible jobs include the following: wwclinical psychologist in a mental health care institution wwscientific researcher at a university or an applied research institute wwschool psychologist in special education wwcareer counsellor for professionals or students in an organisation or an educational institute wwmanagement consultant, working as an entrepreneur or for the government wworganisational psychologist in a company wwmarketing and communication manager in a profit or non-profit organisation. The path to your job Where you end up depends on the chosen study direction, your own interests and skills. Therefore it s smart to already ask yourself during your studies what kind of job you would eventually like. In Leiden we offer you extensive facilities to prepare for your future. The Student Career Service of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences will help you formulate the best study and career path for you. This helps you to choose accordingly, for example a study abroad period, an internship, a committee function or a relevant student job. Leiden life offers many opportunities for you to grow and develop. Moving from Germany to the Netherlands to study Psychology was the best decision I ever could have made. Pursuing my whole studies at Leiden University I was always extremely enthusiastic about the content, approach and support. Although studying abroad brought its challenges, it gave me even more the opportunity to grow and learn. Now I am a Health Psychologist working self-employed as Life Coach and Trainer. I developed a training to guide expatriates through their journey of personal change and growing inner resources for living rich and meaningful lives. It s a training for learning to embrace life s challenges and taking effective action, guided by personal values and heart s deepest desires. Besides, I also work as a research assistant for a study on job satisfaction among doctors. I truly love my work! Arianna Berardi first-year student from Italy Psychology is a really broad science, it combines different fields of study with a lot of research. That s an attractive aspect for me. I like the work groups in general; you can actually focus on the material, understand it better and have discussions about it. The students of IBP have backgrounds in many different countries, so we learn a lot from each other cultures. The teachers are stimulating us to think critically. They re always really curious about our opinions. 8

9 Student Support Leiden University supports you Going to university brings many changes in your life. 10 Broaden your horizon Study abroad Psychology students can study abroad for a semester. So, if your heart is set on studying at partner universities in Boston, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Damascus, Florence or Oslo, go ahead; it will give you another unique and unforgettable experience! You will come into contact with other students and teachers, more cultures and increase your language skills and become a truly global citizen. It also improves your chances on the job market. Leiden University has many exchange programmes with foreign universities. In these programmes, important matters such as tuition fees, supervision and recognition For more information see bachelors.leiden.edu/psychology/choose-your-own-route of credits are already taken care of. This saves you time and money. The study abroad coordinator will help you to organise your international experience. Please note that spending a semester abroad requires good planning. Getting a spot can be competitive. Honours Programme You can take courses of the University s Honours Programme. This will give you the opportunity to follow an additional track alongside your bachelor s programme. It is aimed at Leiden bachelor s students who are looking for more of a challenge. You can choose elements from a range of different tracks, often multi- or interdisciplinary, offering greater breadth or depth. The Honours programme is for students who are motivated to do more and who have excellent study results. Masters s Programmes Leiden University offers 10 master s specialisations in Psychology. wwapplied Cognitive Psychology wwchild and Adolescent Psychology wwclinical Neuro Psychology wwclinical Psychology wweconomic and Consumer Psychology wwhealth Psychology wwmethodology and Statistics wwoccupational Health Psychology wwschool Psychology wwsocial and Organisational Psychology Sarah van Wyke second-year student, from United States I was really interested in child and adolescent psychology, so when I discovered the International Bachelor in Psychology my decision was made. My favorite course is Social and Emotional Development, because of my interest in children. Another favorite course is Neuro- and Biopsychology. I like the fact that is quite precise, you take a look at the brain and see how we think and what s going on in the brain. It s exciting that we know so much about the brain, but there is still a lot we don t know. That offers opportunities for future researchers. I appreciate the opportunity here in Leiden to gain so much knowledge. I also follow a course in Entrepreneurship at the campus in The Hague. After I graduate I want to start my own practice as a therapist for children and parents in need of some psychological support. I want to do this in the Netherlands for expats who are living here. 10
