HORIZONTALLY READ WHITE CURRENTLY QUICKLY OVERCROWD BLACK PURPOSE INFORMATION VIDEO THEMES MENUS It is very easy to create a web site which is poorly designed. Here are some of the rules that you should follow to make sure that your web pages look great. Download times Pages need to download ; people get fed up if they have to wait a long time. Think about minimising the size of pictures or providing links to and music files to speed up downloading. White space Leave plenty of space. With web pages, sometimes less is more. Pick a couple of striking pictures and keep text to a minimum or break it into small chunks. Scrolling Scrolling is a big no-no. You should also try to minimise vertical scrolling. Think about whether you can put the onto two pages rather than one long page. Consistency All web pages should look like they belong to the same site. Use the same colour throughout. Use the same font style, menus and logo on every page. Page 4 of 13
5 Text Text should be a font style which is easy to on a screen, for example, Arial or Verdana. Make sure that text is large enough to read. Don t the text. Backgrounds Try to avoid pictures as backgrounds. It is very hard to read any text over a picture, no matter what colour you use. text on a pale background is probably the easiest to read on a screen. White or pale text on a black or dark background looks very striking. Navigation and navigation buttons should be a consistent design throughout the site. They should provide the visitor with a clue as to where they will go. There should also be something to tell the visitor which page they are on. Animations Try to minimise the amount of flashing, blinking or animated images, they distract from your web page and can be very annoying after a while. Animations that never stop are not a good idea. Junk Everything on your page should have a. Web counters don t really provide your audience with information they need, if you must use them, put them out of the way. Avoid under construction signs don t put the page up until it is completed.
