A BUSINESS SERIOUS GAME
Scenario 1 Internationalization Diagnostics This scenario is meant as a diagnostic of your internationalization readiness. It will allow you to assess your competences and skills, analyse whether your company is already in a situation suitable for internationalization, understand if your internationalization objectives have been well defined and if challenges were accurately anticipated and measured. Your goal is to select an appropriate consultant to help internationalize your business. Your consultant will guide you through a number of internationalization preliminary steps such as gathering required information, assessing international markets, and identifying the required roles for your team.
Outcomes Assess if you have the main intercultural, languages, communication, personal and social competences and skills to internationalize your company Recognize which competences and skills you must improve Understand the need to be able to use communications systems and have foreign language abilities Understand which human resources are necessary for internationalization.
Scenario 2 Participation in a Fair The scenario aims to make you aware of various aspects of the participation in fairs: appropriateness, and effectiveness of the participation, knowing how to advertise the participation, looking for funding opportunities, making contacts with the organizers of the fair, making arrangements, negotiation, application for stands and logistics. In this scenario, your director will ask you to prepare the company s upcoming fair presence. Are your decision making skills up to the task?
Outcomes Assess the appropriateness of events and the effectiveness of the participation, and make informed choices based on the information gathered Understand the major logistic skills and competences required for an efficient fair participation and assess whether your company has the required human resources Understand the process of finding the resources needed such as funding, logistics, stand design, etc. Successfully communicate with different business representatives such as fair organizers, logistic companies, fair participants, etc.
Scenario 3 Business Culture The scenario aims to make you aware of various business culture aspects. These are, for instance, greetings, gift giving, dress code, communication styles, meetings and negotiations. Furthermore, basic foreign language knowledge will be acquired. After choosing your target destination, your business partner will help you prepare a first meeting with local partners. In this scenario you could be visiting either Bulgaria, Greece, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain or Brazil.
Outcomes Understand basic words and expressions in Bulgarian, Greek, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Spanish Use basic words and expressions in Bulgarian, Greek, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Spanish, in relevant business situations Understand cultural differences in business: greetings, gift giving, dress code, communication styles, meetings and negotiations Successfully communicate with different business cultures in order to facilitate the business internationalization
Scenario 4 e-commerce and e-marketing Management This scenario is meant to train and assess you in terms of competences and skills related with e-marketing and e-commerce activities. It will analyse whether you already have knowledge in these areas and guide your decisions towards internationalization through e-commerce. Emphasis is given to both strategic planning and practical skills. In this scenario you will be meeting the team in charge of helping you setup your online presence. They are likely to get you involved in the task so expect a few strange buzzwords.
Outcomes Assess if you have the required knowledge and practical skills about e-commerce and e-marketing. Understand the major skills and competences required for e-commerce and e-marketing, including understanding the technical solutions available, organizing tasks and developing written communication Understand the tasks of each staff involved in the Marketing chain Understand the major steps in the process of setting-up an e-commerce website.
Scenario 5 Online Communication The goal of the scenario is to promote the competences and skills necessary for a successful on-line communication and collaboration in business internationalisation. It will also promote language competences, technical and non-technical skills like time management, use of communication tools (phone, fax, , video conference, on-line conference devices, blackboard, etc.), information management, etc. In this scenario you will be challenged to setup business agreements with a partner which is located in the other side of the globe thus you should expect a few hiccups along the way...
Outcomes Use appropriate language courtesy in the communication with clients and customers Use appropriate language expressions in the communication Communicate through ICT tools Use appropriate written communication Manage information in the communication process
Scenario 6 Institutional Negotiation This scenario is very much dependent on the reality of Brazil, the target region and language. The chosen state is Rio Grande do Sul and the action takes place in Porto Alegre and Pelotas where you are setting up your investment. The last scenario challenges you to look for specific administrative entities and documents required to setup your business international branch. Will you be able to make it on your own?
Outcomes Understand the legal and financial requirements to setup a company in Brazil Understand the need to have local contacts to help in establishing the company Be familiar with the practical requirements to do it Develop Brazilian Portuguese language skills
The GABALL Project The European Community is a diverse ensemble of regions, cultures and languages. This is an advantage as it introduces a variance of views and approaches for common problems and issues however it is also a barrier for companies trying to internationalize or establish joint ventures in the European market or outside of it. The use of an intermediary language, like English or German is an incomplete solution as good commercial relations always depend on full understanding and confidence between the parts. In particular, this can be a problem for Micro Enterprises (start-ups) and SMEs that do not have dedicated staff for this purpose. As a consequence, these companies still depend largely on their domestic markets despite the opportunities made available by the enlarged single market and by globalization at large. Business to Business (B2B) e-commerce and e-marketing possibilities are not being effectively exploited by these companies. The GABALL project seeks to address the reinforcement of EU Micro and SME s managers skills in the process of internationalization to internal and external markets (Brazil) through electronic business platforms. The project will also target final year Higher Education students that can potentially become entrepreneurs and are planning to start up their own companies.
The project methodology is based on a Serious Game approach that provide rule-based, professional, real-life situations and contexts of interaction where the player tries to achieve learning objectives and improve personal skills and social competencies. Serious Games are especially useful for training. Rather than offering traditional paper-based or online static courses, games can offer an incredibly immersive and engaging environment where users learn by doing. Users make and learn from their own mistakes in a controlled environment. This trial and error based approach supports well learning and is able also to improve teamwork, social skills, leadership and collaboration. The most striking effect in the use of Serious Games is an increased motivation and engagement.
