1 2015 STARS Steering Committee: Campus Representatives Dennis Carlberg Dennis Carlberg is Boston University's first Sustainability Director. He is an architect and a LEED AP with over 25 years of architectural experience. Prior to joining BU in 2009, Dennis was a principal at Arrowstreet, a Boston-based architectural firm where he focused on sustainable design in the US and abroad. Dennis began his career at the Solar Energy Research Institute (now NREL) and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (now LBNL) conducting daylighting research to reduce building energy consumption and improve the indoor environment. Dennis co-chairs the Urban Land Institute Boston Sustainability Council and the ULI Sea Level Rise Committee. He is a member of the City of Boston Green Ribbon Commission s Higher Education and Climate Preparedness Working Groups, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council s Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Advisory Committee and a member of the Boston Museum of Science s Environmental Sustainability Committee. At Boston University, Dennis collaborates with campus stakeholders to develop and implement a broad-based sustainability strategy to integrate sustainability into the culture and operational functions of the University. This program addresses 17 issue areas from climate and energy to waste reduction and community engagement. Dennis received his Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. Julian Dautremont-Smith is Senior Program Manager at GreenerU and the former chief sustainability officer at Alfred State College. A long time leader in the campus sustainability field, he co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and served as its associate director for five years. Julian Dautremont- Smith At AASHE, Julian played leadership roles in the creation of the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment as well as the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System (STARS). As AASHE's media contact, he was regularly quoted in higher education trade press as well as major media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business Week, and USA Today. His responsibilities also included editing AASHE's publications and developing strategic partnerships with businesses and non-profit organizations. 2 working at AASHE, he co-founded a social enterprise that produces biodiesel in Barbados while studying there on a Fulbright Scholarship. Julian has an MBA and MS in natural resources and the environment from the University of Michigan, where he was a graduate student instructor for an undergraduate class called "Sustainability and the Campus" and the student lead for the Purchasing and Recycling Team of the University's Campus Sustainability Integrated Assessment. He received his BA in environmental studies at Lewis & Clark College, where he served on the Sustainability Council and spearheaded a successful and nationally recognized effort to make Lewis & Clark the first American college to declare compliance with greenhouse gas emissions reductions stipulated in the Kyoto Protocol. Elaine has been at Elon University since May of 2008, when she was hired as the University's first full-time sustainability professional. She leads the University's sustainability efforts, which have operational and educational components. Elaine R. Durr Prior to arriving at Elon, Ms. Durr was a sustainability consultant for a small engineering and consulting firm in Decatur, GA where she managed the certification process for several LEED projects. She is a LEED Accredited Professional and has also served as assistant project manager and assistant LEED certification manager for a construction company in Charlotte, NC. Ms. Durr received her bachelor s degree in environmental science and biology from Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL, and has a master s degree in earth and environmental resources management from the University of South Carolina (USC) School of the Environment. She served as a graduate assistant for the South Carolina Sustainable Universities Initiative (SUI) while attending USC. Ms. Durr also has a professional certificate in Campus Sustainability Leadership from the Institute for Global Sustainability at the University of Vermont. She is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and has served on the Board of the South Carolina Chapter of the USGBC STARS Steering Committee: Campus Representatives 2
3 Michael J. Gulich, AIA, LEED is the Director of University Sustainability at Purdue University and is responsible for providing the vision, organizational strategy, and focus for advancing sustainability efforts campus-wide. Collaborating with students, faculty and staff, he also provides leadership in assisting the University with the continued enhancement of its efforts and reputation with regard to sustainability programs. Purdue University, home to more than 39,000 students, is a major research institution and is supported by top-ranking disciplines in pharmacy, business, engineering, and agriculture. Michael J. Gulich Mr. Gulich, who received his LEED-AP designation in early 2002, worked for Croxton Collaborative Architects (CCA) prior to coming to Purdue. At CCA, he served as Vice President and director of the firm s initiatives in High Performance Buildings and Strategic Sustainability Consulting. Mr. Gulich has more than 15 years of prior experience in the management, design, and practice of architecture for a wide client base including commercial, institutional, and public agency organizations. At CCA, he also provided green / sustainability leadership and facilitation for school, health care, and institutional projects, and was an in-house mentor on topics of green design and technologies and LEED. While with CCA, Mr. Gulich managed the team that audited sustainability of all design and construction at the World Trade Center Site (11+ million square feet, $15+ billion construction cost). He also served as LEED Project Administrator for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) 8th Floor Expansion Prototype the highest rated LEED for Commercial Interiors project ever. Preston Jacobsen Preston is the Sustainability Manager for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Prior to joining UT in 2013, he was Sustainability Analyst for Haywood Community College (HCC) where he conducted the STARS program as well as fostered the Climate Action Plan, through the ACUPCC. This position was also responsible for Sustainability Related/Focused Curriculum development, coordinating implementation of NCCCS Code Green Super CIP, securing grants to foster Sustainable growth/operations across campus, assisting with Low Impact Development and Strategic Planning, maintaining Sustainability Website, offering professional development opportunities in Sustainability and connecting with community to increase Sustainability Initiatives across WNC. Preston graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelors in Environmental Science, where he focused on hydrology and energy management. Working with STARS since its pilot version, Preston has 2015 STARS Steering Committee: Campus Representatives 3
4 worked with colleagues and community partners in WNC to bring HCC a Silver (2011) and Gold Rating (2012). Latest work includes a NCCCS wide effort to create NC s 1 st Sustainability Association for the NC Community College System as well as community collaboration across WNC to bring Electric Vehicles to the region. Nurit Katz UCLA's first Sustainability Coordinator, Nurit Katz is working to foster partnerships among academic, research, and operational departments and further the goals and initiatives of the campus sustainability program. Nurit is also an Instructor for UCLA Extension's Global Sustainability Certificate Program. Before starting in this position she founded the UCLA Sustainable Resource Center to provide resources for the community on sustainability. She then served as President of the Graduate Students Association and assisted Dr. Charles Corbett in developing a new interdisciplinary graduate certificate program - Leaders in Sustainability. After graduation she helped launch the UCLA Center for Corporate Environmental Performance. She has worked on a variety of sustainability projects including a project for the City of Los Angeles that focused on transit-oriented development along the Expo Light Rail Line. Her essay on the topic was published in the UCLA Anderson Forecast's "Solutions for Our City". Nurit holds an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, a Masters in Public Policy from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, and a BA in Environmental Education from Humboldt State University. Nurit was recently honored as one of 100 Inspirational Alumni for the 75th Anniversary of UCLA Anderson. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Luskin Center for Innovation and on the Board of Opportunity Green. In 2010 Nurit completed a full Ironman distance triathlon with Team in Training in support of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Chris O Brien Chris joined American University in 2009 as the university's first Director of Sustainability. Previously, he directed the Responsible Purchasing Network at the Center for a New American Dream, and earlier served as Managing Director of the Green Business Network and the Fair Trade Federation. He is Treasurer of the Fair Trade Resource Network, and coowns the Seven Bridges Organic Brewing Supply Cooperative. He serves on the ASTM Sustainability Executive Committee and the Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Advisory Board. In 2006, Chris authored the award-winning book Fermenting Revolution: How to Drink Beer and Save the World (New Society Publishers, 2006). Degrees BA Liberal Studies, Penn State, 1994; MS Science and Technology Studies, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1997 Anna Pautler Anna got involved in higher ed. sustainability in 2009 when she joined the University of Vermont s (UVM) Office of Sustainability as a Performance Tracking Fellow. At the time, she was working toward her doctorate in Natural Resources, studying the impacts of harvesting biomass for energy production on long-term carbon storage. In her role, she completed UVM s GHG inventory, analyzed energy performance, piloted STARS with various Service-Learning courses, and worked with faculty and students on other hands-on projects. After successfully defending her dissertation in the fall of 2012, she joined Clean Air-Cool Planet to manage the Campus Carbon Calculator (now part of the University of New Hampshire's Sustainability Institute), including its migration to the online portal, CarbonMAP. She provided guidance on best practices for GHG accounting and climate action planning to higher ed sustainability professionals across North America. Anna subsequently worked as a sustainability consultant in the private sector and received her LEED Green Associate accreditation. Anna is currently the Sustainability Data Assessment & Reporting Officer at the Office for Sustainability at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. She is passionate about climate change mitigation and many sustainability issues. In her spare time, Anna enjoys reading, running, cross-country skiing, playing sports, painting and drawing, baking, and playing violin. She also recently learned to knit. Cindy is the founding director of the Sustainability Office at UNC Chapel Hill, where she has served for nine years. She is a member of and staffs the Vice Chancellors Sustainability Advisory Committee. She is an advisor to the student-run Renewable Energy Special Projects Committee. And she publishes a biennial Campus Sustainability Report. Cindy also teaches a variety of sustainability-focused courses. Cindy Shea Prior to UNC, Cindy worked at international research institutes in Washington, D.C., and Winnipeg, Canada, with the Florida Sustainable Communities Network, and as a foreign correspondent in Germany. Cindy sits on the steering committee of DOE s Higher Education Energy Alliance and co-chairs the UNC system wide sustainability committee. She is a LEED Accredited Professional STARS Steering Committee: Campus Representatives 5
