2 GUIDANCE FOR STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS This profile is a comprehensive document, detailing all the learning opportunities available in a specific clinical area. It is intended that students and educators select the appropriate opportunities to help the students to meet the specified competencies for particular placements. Students should not expect to access all of these opportunities during one placement. 2

4 Occupational Therapy Urgent Care Service AREA PROFILE CLINICAL AREA An Occupational Therapy service, providing assessment and intervention for people experiencing an acute episode of Mental Health difficulties. Service is provided onto inpatient wards or through the crisis and home treatment team. LOCATION Bede Day Unit, South Tyneside Hospital, Harton Lane, South Shields. (Nearest Metro is Tyne Dock) TELEPHONE NUMBER STAFF LIST WORKING HOURS Band 6 OT Band 6 OT (part time) Band 5 OT 2 x HCA s Monday to Friday 8:30am till 4:30pm. PHILOSOPHY OF CARE The purpose of occupational therapy is to bring about change in order to improve and individual s quality of life through the use of graded occupation. It is a health and social care profession which is concerned with enhancing the daily life skills of individuals with physical and mental health problems or social needs. Occupation is used to acquire, restore, or maintain balanced life roles through the development of skills in the spheres of self care, productivity and leisure. Where illness, disability or loss are experienced and lifestyles are disrupted, occupational dysfunction may occur. MODEL OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY The OT model used is the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance, although other approaches are used: e.g. MOHO. PSI, CBT, Solution focused 4
5 Occupational Therapy Urgent Care Service PROFILE OF LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES To provide the learner with the following opportunities to experience the occupational therapy process within the adult urgent care mental health service:- * To observe and participate in the Occupational Therapy process, through the assessment of clients, planning, implementation and evaluation of care from referral stage through to discharge. * To interact with a variety of clients within this service, providing opportunity to observe and discuss occupational dysfunction. *To spend time with other professionals and staff, both within the immediate and wider team. Additionally, to provide the learner with the opportunity to observe and/ or participate in multidisciplinary reviews to with other professionals. *To provide the learner with the opportunity to experience working within a professional, team-working setting. * To provide the learner with the opportunity to observe and apply the principles associated with professional suitability (as outlined in Code of Ethics, Conduct and HPC Statement). * To provide the learner with the opportunity to engage in active discussions in relation to casework and other significant issues. *Provision of opportunity to experience a variety of one to one sessions with clients (occupational therapy, depression management, anxiety management, psychosis management and wellness and recovery work). *Provision of opportunity to experience and participate in a variety of group settings with clients (e.g. ward community meeting; wellness and recovery group; music group; art group; men s group,). *Opportunity to access statutory and voluntary organisations, e.g., Social Services Department, CMHTs, Drug and Alcohol Services, MHIST and Art Studio. * Develop of communication skills verbal, non-verbal and written. 5
