Efficient Urban Management Relying on the FI-WARE Generic Enablers Prof. Luis Muñoz Laboratories for R+D+I in Telecommunications, Santander; Spain University of Cantabria 1
Outline What is OUTSMART about? The OUTSMART stakeholders. The OUTSMART architecture. The U&E and FI symbiosis through FI WARE. Management of urban services relying on FI. 2
What is OUTSMART about? OUTSMART will establish the foundations of a Future Internet enabled eco system, supporting the creation of innovative services and applications with real value to European economy and citizens in five example areas most critical to our society. Our thesis is that by adapting and deploying key Future Internet enablers in existing utility and environment value chains, innovative and economically viable solutions can be developed that contribute to the sustainability of resources on our planet, while allowing to minimize negative impacts on the environment. 3
The OUTSMART stakeholders Cluster Berlin Cluster Santander Cluster Aarhus Cluster Birmigham Cluster Trento 4
The OUTSMART architecture 5
The U&E and FI symbiosis through FI WARE 6
IoT.Backend.DeviceManagement GE Provides the resource-level management of remote assets. Provides communication capabilities such as basic IP connectivity and management of disconnected devices. 7
IoT.Backend.ThingsManagement GE Responsible for Thing-level interaction: Provides functionality to identify, address and discover Things and IoT Resources Point of contact for accessing information about entities and their attributes Provides the interfaces for applications to register, query for and subscribe to updates on context availability information about IoT resources and the variables they measure Implements the IoT Broker: Provides access to Thing-Level information. 8
IoT.Gateway.DeviceManagement GE Core of the gateway functionality, responsible for the communication with the Backend and IoT and non-iot devices. It contains Resource Management capabilities and the Resource Directory (RD), used to keep track of IoT Resources that reflect those resources that are reachable via the gateway 9
IoT.Gateway.ProtocolAdapter GE Deals with the incoming and outgoing traffic and messages between the Gateway and Devices registered to be served by the gateway. Provides the gateway external interface to non-etsi M2M devices hosting sensor and actuator resources 10
Data.MetadataPreprocessing GE As a data collector interface, data filtering and data transformer, will be used to implement the protocol adapter for those legacy information sources that cannot directly communicate with the Gateway Device Management GE or the IoT Broker. 11
Data.QueryBroker GE Middleware used to establish unified retrieval in distributed and heterogeneous environments. Includes extension functionalities to integrate multimedia specific retrieval paradigms in the overall query execution plan, e.g., multimedia fusion technique. 12

Berlin Waste Management 3.4 million inhabitants Berlin: area of 890 km² (more than Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart combined) 1.4 million km cleaning of streets and pavement 200,000 dogs BSR is the largest municipal refuse collection service provider in Germany 80,000 tons street cleaning waste 400,000 trees drop 1,800,000 homes (400,000 waste containers) 1.3 million tons of waste 15
Berlin Waste Management Underground Container Waste Bin Sends the data directly to the platform, eg. via GPRS SAP BSR Infrastructure Other Parties Short range communications 10 m OutSmart Platform BSR Controlling 10 m Sends the data directly to the platform,eg. via GPRS Maintainance Marketing Ressource Planning Handheld 16
Sustainable Transport in Birmingham Encouraging sustainable transportation: service: *green personal travel planner concept: *changing behavior through incentives
Sustainable Transport in Birmingham Travel smarter application A travel planner that encourages green transportation methods provides realtime transportation updates and mapping warns of potential delays and offers alternative routes to minimize them.
Street Lighting Management in Santander Optimizing energy and maintenance costs of public street-lighting Benefits Increases energy efficiency Reduces consumption and maintenance costs
Street Lighting Management in Santander 20
Active Leakage Detection in Trento 1. Reduction of waste of sanitized water for drinking purposes OPTIMIZE 2. Increased general sense of duty for public water consumption 3. Improved public image from the environmental standpoint of the utility providers 4. Reduction of efforts and costs for leakage detection and fixing MONITOR ACTUATE New adapters can overcome today s incompatibilities due to usage of custom Monitoring Solutions
Conclusions The smart city concept embraces different areas. A very promising one emanates from the synergies between U&E with FI. FI WARE IoT GE is a good candidate for setting up a package that allows to replicate use cases from OUTSMART in other cities, All the ingredients are there (environmental, energy, transport, waste management and the utilities). Very attractive from the sustainability and exploitation model. We do not have to forget a GE which allows the transparent interaction of the citizen with the IoT and IoS portfolio for creating new assets Social innovation 22
