Communicating waste baskets for intelligent waste management Dr. Thomas Luckenbach, Fraunhofer FOKUS Michael Tost, BSR
ppp outsmart.eu/ OUTSMART Provisioning of urban/regional smart services and business models enabled by the Future Internet (Part of the PPP FI Initiative of FP7) Structured into five clusters: Waste Management Berlin cluster Water & Sewage Aarhus cluster Transport Infrastructure Birmingham cluster Energy &Street Lighting Santander cluster Water & Environment Trento cluster

BERLIN Cluster Mission The Berlin cluster is working on the integration of ICT into relevant parts of the waste management process The mission of the cluster is to gather data (via capillary sensor networks) and provide information to waste management utilities to support optimization processes on different levels (service, costs, customer satisfaction, environmental aspects, employees) The main focus of the cluster is to develop, prototype and deploy a network of intelligent and communicative waste baskets throughout the city in order to optimize waste management in different aspects Department for Urban Development and the Environment
BERLIN Cluster Business Cases Intelligent public waste basket management Intelligent subsurface container Smart phone apps for citizen support ( mug corner detection )
Intelligent Waste Basket IDEA Development of intelligent waste basket in order to optimise waste management waste basket knows about its own status and is able to communicate DESCRIPTION Monitoring the fill level and frequency of use in waste bins Managing other incidents like defectiveness Gathering and evaluating the data from the waste baskets Adapting the logistics according to statistical/real time data Adapting the process of waste basket maintenance BENEFIT Reducing costs by improving the logistics and the process of waste bin emptying and maintenance Reducing CO 2 emission Citizen benefits by paying lower / constant prices for waste collection

Application view by BSR
BSR is the largest municipal refuse collection service provider in Germany area of 890 km² (more than Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart combined) 3.4 million inhabitants 1.4 million km cleaning of streets and pavement 200,000 dogs 80,000 tons street cleaning waste 400,000 trees drop 1.3 million tons of waste 1,800,000 homes (400,000 waste containers)
Refuse Collection Facts approx. 1,600 employees, approx. 400 vehicles household and commercial waste (~20 million emptying's per year, 340,000 waste containers) Collection of organic waste (~3,0 million emptying's per year, 75,000 waste containers) Bulky waste: ~11,000 tons Other: e.g. 400,000 collected and recycled Christmas trees
Street Cleaning Facts approx. 2,000 employees, approx. 850 vehicles cleaning of streets and pavement (~1.4 mio. km) ~4.6 million emptying of wastebaskets / year (20,000 wastebaskets) ~160,000 gully clean ups ~90,000 m ³ of greenery Snow removal and gritting ( more than 18,000 intersections, about Km (5 x Berlin Moscow)
The Berlin Cluster within OUTSMART The theme of the Berlin Cluster is the intelligent waste management, using sensors and the future internet. There are two subprojects: 1. Intelligent waste bins with the themes Waste bin maintainance Fill level measurement 2. Intelligent underground containers with the theme fill level measurement. Both subprojects shall also lead to optimized operative and administrative processes.
Main issues / goals within the subprojekt Intelligent Waste Bin The sensor sends the signal (full / empty) 10 m far away. The waste bin has eg. an RFID chip (passive) on/from which eg. the following data can be written/read: GPS coordinates Type Colour Last maintainance Date of installation The existing ICT of BSR should be used / integrated. 16 Projekt OutSmart /
Main issues / goals within the subprojekt Intelligent Underground Container The sensor sends the fill level signal (25%, 50%, 75%; 100%) directly to the OUTSMART platform (eg. via GPRS) Different types of users (BSR, other related waste management companies, customers) have access to the fill level data according to an authorisation concept. The existing ICT of BSR should be used / integrated. 17 Projekt OutSmart /
Underground Container Waste Bin Sends the data directly to the platform eg. via GPRS SAP BSR Infrastructure Other Parties 10 m OutSmart Platform BSR Controlling 10 m Sends the data directly to the platform eg. via GPRS Maintainance Marketing Ressource Planning Handheld 18 Projekt OutSmart /
