1 8 Graphic Art and Print Production NISCAIR has, over the years, made a name for itself by undertaking designing and printing of high-quality S&T literature with mass appeal. It has a state-of-the-art Graphic Art & Print Production Division that has acquired a vast paraphernalia of pre- and post-press facilities and expertise. The Division comprises of the following Sections: Production Graphic Art DTP Printing & Binding The Division undertakes publication of all NISCAIR s in-house publications, comprising Research Journals, Books, Encyclopedias, Reports, Newsletters, Popular Science Magazines, etc., and also publications from CSIR Headquarter, CSIR Laboratories/Institutions and other Government departments, comprising their Annual Reports, Newsletters, Bulletins, Journals, Posters, Brochures, Pamphlets, etc. The planning and execution of the above S&T publications, their initial costing, copy editing, formatting, designing, printing, binding, etc. are all undertaken by the Division. The Division also takes-up urgent printing jobs from CSIR Headquarter and CSIR Laboratories. The personnel of the Division also deliver lectures and impart training on various aspects of DTP, designing, production, printing to the students of Science Communication through print Media, students from SAARC countries, and to students of Printing Technology from the Pusa Polytechnic, New Delhi. 63

3 ProduCTIon Section Production Section looks after the production of all in-house and outside publications. During the period , the Production Section handled a number of publications of CSIR Hq, CSIR Laboratories and other Govt. departments (See Table 1 &2 ). A few prestigious publications handled by the Production Section and which were highly appreciated are: Indian Pharmacopoeia 2014 of IP Commission, Govt. of India, (having approx pages printed in four volumes); CDC Brochure - Scheme on FACS-MSE; CDC - 27th Annual Report & Accounts ; and two in-house publications: Climatoons, a cartoon book on climate change and Sea, Ship and Seafaring. This involved: (1) Management of front office, where all printing job queries are received, planned for size, designing, paper, printing, binding, etc. and estimates sent to the clients. (2) Production handling and pre-press task, involving copy editing; marking on the manuscript for print area, typography, uniformity, style, etc., getting the text formatted by DTP and cover and other artwork made by Art & Graphic Sections, proof reading and providing the clients error-free final pages and sending final pages for printing; and (3) Post press task, for timely delivery of printed copies to the clients, also including final costing, billing, following up for payments, reconciliation of the payments received with Accounts Section, and preparing the list of payments received, monthly and annually. The payments received add substantially to the ECF of NISCAIR. The Production Section coordinates with all the sections including editorial, graphic, printing and binding for quality and timely delivery of jobs. 65

4 CSIR-NISCAIR Annual Report Graphic ART Section Art & Graphic is an important pre-press activity of CSIR-NISCAIR that gives shape and colour to the graphic designing jobs meant to be printed. Art & Graphic team also executes various graphic designing jobs contracted to the institute by other organisations. The Section is equipped with High-end PCs, Quality colour printers, Flatbed scanners, etc. Graphic Designing team of NISCAIR uses the latest versions of graphic-designing computer applications of Photoshop, CorelDraw, InDesign, etc. Approximately 20,000 visuals are made by the Art & Graphic team during the year in the form of following: Posters/Banners, Cover of Books/Magazines/Report, Jackets, Invitation Cards, Masthead/ Logo Design, Folders, Brochures, Leaflet Creative specialized layout for Magazines, Pictorial Books, Newsletters and Annual Reports. Numerous kinds of creative graphics, scientific illustrations, charts like Flowcharts, Bar chart, Pie charts etc. Scanning and editing of the pictures/illustrations Jobs done during the Year The Art & Graphic team takes care of all the graphic designing jobs related with all the creative designing jobs of the publication like cover designing, drawings, illustrations and creative specialised layout. This includes 21 Scientific Journals, 3 Popular Science Magazines and 2 Newsletters being brought out by CSIR-NISCAIR. In the popular science magazines, creative specialized layout and cover designing is undertaken keeping in view the target audience. Besides these regular inhouse jobs, Art & Graphic team also executes various graphic designing jobs contracted to the institute by other government organizations. Regular In-house Jobs: (i) Designing covers and creating/editing/improvement of graphics or technical illustrations for approximately 150 issues of 20 NISCAIR Research periodicals printed annually. (ii) Designing, improvement of pictures and formatting of CSIR News and CSIR Samachar newsletters (iii) Exclusive job of visualizing and designing with creative specialized layout the two popular science monthly magazines i.e. Science Reporter, and Vigyan Pragati with attractive graphics (created or edited). (iv) Cover design and graphics of popular science Urdu magazine (quarterly), Science ki Duniya. 66

6 CSIR-NISCAIR Annual Report Desk Top Publishing (DTP) Section DTP is an important pre-press activity for the printing of Research Journals, Books & Magazines, Proceedings, Encyclopaedia, Annual Reports, Bulletins, Folders, Newsletters, Pamphlets, etc. The section takes up both in-house as well as outside jobs. The work involves page formatting, layout designing of 2- and 4-color jobs, scanning of illustrations/photographs and color correction, etc. The DTP unit is equipped with the latest computers and softwares like Ventura, PageMaker, MS Office, Photoshop, In-Design, Akshar and Leap Office (Hindi), etc. which are used in page formatting and designing work. The pages of the journals and other publications are formatted as per the required house style and standard guidelines. These publications contain a number of B&W and color Photographs/Illustrations, Halftones, Drawings, etc. which are scanned and incorporated into the laid-out pages and the single piece output taken through Laser Printer or Imagesetter on Translucent sheet/film for printing. Printing Section The Printing Section takes care of all printing assignments/jobs through offset process. The printing section has three single-colour and three double-colour sheet-fed offset printing machines. A view of the high-end printing facility at CSIR-NISCAIR 68

7 To further improve the quality of print production and productivity, under modernization plan a new four-colour sheet-fed offset printing machine [CPC Komori LS-429, made in Japan] was procured and installed in May The quality and productivity of NISCAIR colour printing has increased manifold since the new four-colour sheet fed offset printing machine became operational. The section also has a plate-making unit with Auto plate processor and a binding unit. The output of printing section is around 30,000 pages per annum including colour pages. The Section provides excellent print quality to the institute as well as to outside clients. Summer training is also imparted to students of Printing Technology of the Guru Jambeshwar University of Science and Technology (Hisar), Kurukshetra University (Kurukshetra) and Pusa Polytechnic (New Delhi). 69
