My current research concerns women s recognition and response to the onset of normal labor and the decision criteria involved in the choice to go to the hospital or remain at home in early labor. Concurrently, I am using epidemiological methods to analyze racial and ethnic disparities in primary cesarean section rates, employing large secondary data sets. The goals of this research are twofold: 1) to improve the effectiveness of strategies devoted to predicting and influencing the likelihood of

6 C.V. -6- successful physiological birth (vaginal birth) and, 2) to improve the quality and equality of maternity care services. As secondary component to my program of research, I am interested in the influence of the labor and delivery nurses mode of delivery and the specific characteristics and practice patterns that explain the variation in utilization of obstetric interventions. There are immediate practice implications (quality improvement strategies for reducing cesarean deliveries that are specific to nurses) to this line of inquiry.
