5 Welcome Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Hull. The faculty is situated within the new health development on the western side of the Hull Campus, which includes a state-of-the-art clinical skills facility. The faculty has a student population of around 2,000 students each year, who undertake a variety of educational courses and research from our comprehensive portfolio for pre-qualifying, postregistration and postgraduate nurses, midwives, ODPs and other health care professionals. We welcome national and international students. The faculty is actively engaged in research to ensure that staff develop up-to-date knowledge which underpins their teaching. All courses are developed in partnership with health and social care colleagues. We endeavour to achieve high levels of student satisfaction by creating a friendly, supportive and academically challenging environment. Our approaches to teaching and helping you to learn include interprofessional learning with medical students from the Hull York Medical School and other departments within the University. The use of e-learning complements traditional lectures and seminar presentations. Students are able to practise clinical skills in the safe environment of the clinical skills facility. Learning in health care practice takes place in a range of health and social care settings around North and East Yorkshire and North and East Lincolnshire. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (as the professional statutory body for nursing and midwifery), the College of Operating Department Practitioners and the Health and Care Professions Council (for operating department practice) approve our portfolio and their annual monitoring has shown that our programmes consistently met their required standards. Our committed and dedicated staff are here to support you in your personal development. I would like to extend a warm invitation to you to join us in the Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University of Hull. 6 I am a second-year long programme Midwifery student who is following a lifelong dream and thoroughly enjoying doing so. There is a lot of hard work involved, but nothing beats the thrill of being on placement and caring for a woman, her baby and her family. It s great to see the things you learn at the University making sense in practice and knowing you are starting on the path to a career that is challenging yet ultimately satisfying! 7 Pre-Qualifying Courses Here at the University of Hull we offer the following professional courses that lead not only to an academic award but also to a registered nursing, midwifery or operating department practice (ODP) qualification: BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult, Children, Mental Health, Learning Disability) full-time BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) part-time BSc (Hons) Midwifery Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery Graduate Diploma in Midwifery BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies DipHE Operating Department Practitioner* Our programmes will equip you with the skills to become a safe, competent and compassionate practitioner with a sound understanding of the theoretical basis of clinical practice. Staff within the Faculty of Health and Social Care believe that this is most effectively achieved by closely integrating your clinical and theoretical experience. Our close working relationships with health and social care providers enhance the whole student experience. Such partnerships ensure that our students practice experience is commensurate with their level of training and the modules currently being studied. Entrants looking to change careers are encouraged to undertake health care programmes as they bring with them many valuable skills and experiences. In formulating our entry criteria for non-school-leavers, we embrace and support the wideningparticipation agenda. Ours is a learning environment which is responsive to change, and which contributes to the development and expansion of knowledge through the research activities of staff. We use a variety of teaching and assessment methods which engage you in the development of cognitive and psychomotor skills and attitudes. These include lectures, tutorials, group work, seminars, workshops, problem-based learning, practical demonstrations and virtual learning environments (VLE). Some teaching takes place in our highly advanced Clinical Skills facility, which enables you to learn, practise and rehearse many clinical skills under direct supervision and in small groups. All of our pre-qualifying courses consist of compulsory modules, and you will study six modules per year. Each module is assessed, and successful completion of all modules is necessary to attain the professional award. Practice is an integral and important part of the courses and is assessed in placement. Clinical placements are undertaken within local NHS trusts and other sector provision, both north and south of the River Humber. While on clinical placement, students are taught and supported by experienced practitioners with a wealth of knowledge and clinical skills. Owing to the various and complex demands of these courses, all students are required to be computer-literate before commencing their studies. The Faculty of Health and Social Care *From September 2014 we are planning to offer this course as a BSc (Hons) degree (subject to NHS and professional body agreement). It will be a three year full-time course (see entry criteria for further information). 4 The University of Hull

8 Nursing What nurses do For the nurse, the central focus is always the safety and wellbeing of the people seeking or requiring health care. This is achieved in various ways: by providing individualised, holistic care; by using high-quality communication skills, including listening; and by ensuring that a professional approach is used in every aspect of care. People receiving health care play a significant part in making decisions about the kind of care that is best for them they are central to any health care assessment undertaken, while family and friends are encouraged to contribute where necessary. Additional strategies used to ensure people receive the optimum care include basing all nursing activities on sound evidence and being able to rationalise why every action is taken. The modern nurse is required to maintain continuous professional development and reflection plays a significant role in achieving this. Nurses are encouraged to reflect and learn from all their experiences and as this can become an increasingly complex activity undergraduate preregistration student nurses are exposed to it in many elements of their programmes of study. As key members of a multidisciplinary team, nurses are required to work with other health professionals, ranging from those encountered in practice (e.g. doctors, dieticians and physiotherapists) to those that they will learn alongside in the classroom and in clinical practice (e.g. student midwives and medical students). Nursing covers a range of activities and skills that few other professions can match. For example, it can involve helping someone to recover from an operation, encouraging someone to live life independently in the community or enabling someone with a mental illness to come to terms with the voices in their head. Nurses can be equally diverse in character and temperament extroverted, shy, ambitious, idealistic, funny, serious if you have the drive to attain the necessary professional standards for nursing, you will be very welcome at the University of Hull because you have the capacity to make a difference. And there are so many reasons to become a nurse: the variety, the teamwork, the skills and self-confidence that you will acquire; the sense of achievement and of doing something worthwhile; as well as great prospects for career development. If this sounds like a career pathway that you would like to take, one of the undergraduate preregistration nursing programmes will help you to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and professional attitude required for professional practice. If you have the commitment and drive to become a nurse, the rewards in making a real difference to people s lives are plentiful. There are so many reasons to become a nurse: the variety, the teamwork, the skills and self-confidence that you will acquire; the sense of achievement and of doing something worthwhile; as well as great prospects for career development. 9 The fields Adult field (B740) Our integrated degree in Adult Nursing prepares you for a range of career options in health and social care. Registered adult nurses work with a wide age range of people with diverse health conditions in a variety of health care settings such as people s homes, community-based health centres and general and specialist hospital-based services. Your course is a combination of theory and practice-based learning within the University and a range of practice settings. During your time on campus you will attend large-group lectures and smaller tutorials. Face-to-face teaching is supported by companion websites designed to supplement and extend your learning. Small-group teaching will often be led by your personal supervisor a lecturer who will support and oversee you throughout the three years of your degree. Practice-based learning on campus takes place in the faculty s Clinical Skills facility. This centre provides an authentic environment in which you can learn, revisit and gain confidence in your skills and abilities as a nurse. Students studying adult nursing are allocated a range of placement areas depending on whether they are based in Hull and East Yorkshire or in the North Lincolnshire area. Placement availability is spread over a wide geographical patch that takes in both urban and rural settings. The amount of time spent in practice increases slightly as you progress, and at the end of your course you will undertake a longer 12-week placement to prepare you for your future career. In each placement, you will be working under the supervision and guidance of staff who have undertaken specialist preparation in mentoring students. Recognising the interdisciplinary and patient-focused nature of health and social care, on each placement you will be required to gain experience with other disciplines and to seek feedback from patients and others about how you are doing. Students on the Adult Nursing degree spend some time learning alongside those studying learning Disability Nursing, Children s Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. You will need to develop time-management and problem-solving skills, and you will need to be adaptable in order to work within a constantly changing health care environment. In return, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you can make a difference to people s lives. Children field (B730) The course in Children s Nursing equips you with the knowledge and skills required to provide professional care to sick children nursed in hospital or in the community. Clinical experience is undertaken in a range of health care settings throughout the Hull and North and North East Lincolnshire areas. Students have to be willing to undertake placements in all of these locations. The University does not have accommodation in North and North East Lincolnshire, so it is an advantage for students to have their own transport. Applicants should be aware that a lot of travelling is involved and recognise the financial implications of this. While challenging, working with sick children can be hugely rewarding. There can be few areas of work which enable practitioners to make a greater and more significant contribution to people s lives. You learn to work with both children and their families. You must learn to communicate and interact with parents and other family members in situations that are often difficult. However, Children s Nursing can also be fun and incredibly enjoyable. Above all else, those who seek to work with sick children must have a real love for children and both a deep respect for and a keen interest in the study of childhood. The course is designed to be both inspiring and visionary. You are encouraged to find appropriate evidence but also to employ analytical skills and use your imagination to fully understand how the sick child can be nursed effectively and empathically. You are also encouraged to look at ways in which the care of the sick child can be improved and developed. Students are encouraged to develop the skills that will be needed for tomorrow s nursing as well as the skills needed today. It should be noted that this course is both academically and emotionally challenging. Applicants should consider whether they have the necessary aptitude to undertake an academic programme while at the same time working with children who often have significant health care needs. 6 The University of Hull

10 The Children s Nursing course shares some core modules with the Mental Health, Learning Disability and Adult Nursing Courses. Modules specific to child nursing include: Nine clinical placement modules Foundations in Children s Nursing Meeting the Acute Health Care Needs of Children Meeting the Longer-Term Health Care Needs of Children Managing Complexity in Clinical Practice Safe and Confident Children s Nurse We welcome applications from individuals who consider that they have the very special range of skills needed for this course. Evidence of paid or unpaid experience of working with children outside of the student s immediate family is required. This should be for a minimum of 30 days in the three years prior to commencing the course and cannot be from either coursework or family involvement. A reference from this experience is also expected. Learning Disability field (B761) At the University of Hull we provide a pre-registration course that offers our students the opportunity to experience diversity of need, age range and service provider. People with a learning disability often live in poverty and socially deprived areas and do not have the opportunity to work as a student nurse you will develop an understanding of how this can impact on their health and wellbeing. skills and qualities, which is why we offer a strongly experiential course with a clear focus on service user and practitioner involvement. You will learn and develop through working with people with a fascinating range of views and insights. Our student groups are small, so we can offer support and encouragement both in practice and in study. We also have dedicated practice placement facilitators and experienced practitioners working closely with you, your lecturers and your mentors. As a society we find it much easier to talk about being physically well or unwell than about mental health problems. The oneto-one personal relationships that Mental Health Nurses form with people are at the heart of the care process. Your education and training is structured to help build these therapeutic relationships. The key challenge for Mental Health Nurses is to use their specialist skills, together with their own personal strengths, to help people come to terms with their problems. Mental health nurses are also the most likely to be responsible for coordinating a patient s care in the community. You will therefore find yourself liaising professionally with a wide range of other services, including social workers, police, charities, and local government and housing officials. You will work with people with a Learning Disability in practice areas including their own homes, local communities, schools, residential services, assessment and treatment units and day services. In Hull and surrounding areas we have strong links with a variety of services to enable students to experience working with many care providers in all areas of life. You will also have the opportunity to experience an alternative placement either locally, nationally or internationally. Within the small specialty of Learning Disability, you will benefit from strong supervision and support from a team of lecturers and mentors in practice. Our students regularly have the opportunity to attend local, regional and national learning disability events. Service users and carers regularly contribute to our teaching, and we promote branch visits to other areas and services. Mental Health field (B760) Where else might you come across a rap artist in your classroom or a stimulating discussion about the nature of empathy on a visit to a sculpture park? We want you to be fully prepared for the vast range of people and settings that you will undoubtedly come across in a career in Mental Health Nursing, so we try hard to give you the broadest possible experience. Becoming a mental health nurse is a personal and a professional journey that involves the acquisition and development of special The University of Hull 7

14 Midwifery What midwives do Midwife means with woman therefore the central focus is always on the woman. Midwives are accountable and responsible for the care, advice and management of all women in their care. That means listening to women, recognising their needs and responding appropriately as a confident and competent practitioner. As a key member of a multidisciplinary team you will be required to liaise with other health professionals and with emergency and social services to ensure continuity of support for people who need it. Midwifery covers a wide range of activities that few other professions can match: for example, helping to promote good health in pregnancy, assisting women to birth in a setting of their choice or helping a new mother, and her family to cope after the birth. Midwives are as individual as the women they care for, in terms of age, temperament and personality. Whatever your personality and if you have the drive and the ability to attain the necessary professional standards for midwifery, we would encourage you to apply because you are likely to have the capacity to make a difference. There are many reasons to become a midwife: the variety, the teamwork, the skills and selfconfidence that you will acquire, plus the sense of achievement and of doing something worthwhile. There is also great potential for career development. Entry criteria for three-year BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme Minimum of 300 points on the UCAS tariff scale from accepted Level 3 qualifications. 15 I am soon to complete my first year of Midwifery and what a year it s been! The University is a fantastic environment to learn. All of the midwives I ve worked with in practice have been supportive, encouraging and welcoming. It s a demanding course and takes a huge amount of hard work and dedication but the feeling of being with women and their families through the life-changing experience of pregnancy and birth truly is a privilege. I m very proud to be a student midwife at the University of Hull and would recommend the course to anyone. Rebecca Barber BSc Midwifery 12 The University of Hull

18 Operating Department Practice The DipHE Operating Department Practice is a two-year full-time course. Successful completion provides eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Registered Operating Department Practitioner. What ODPs do Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work alongside doctors, nurses and other health care staff within the perioperative environment, providing multidisciplinary team care for patients before, during and after surgery. The term perioperative is used because it represents theatre care in its broadest sense and supports the more holistic approach which characterises contemporary practice. ODPs predominantly work in the operating theatre environment, but their technical skills, knowledge base and expertise are utilised in a broad range of critical care areas within the hospital setting. For example, some ODPs work in ICUs on resuscitation teams and in other areas of the hospital. The role involves communicating with patients and their carers to make an assessment, plan care and provide a high standard of care and intervention for patients before, during and after their surgical event. Working within the operating theatre can be very demanding, so candidates must be able to work under pressure and demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills. Good communication skills and an ability to work as part of a dedicated team are essential components of the job. A career in operating department practice is exciting, rewarding and challenging, with many varied opportunities for personal development and role diversity. Operating Department Practitioners have the opportunity, after registration, to develop their careers in specialist clinical settings. There are also opportunities for work within the independent health care sector or overseas. The perioperative environment is dynamic and, in line with the Government agenda New Ways of Working, once you have gained sufficient education and clinical experience you may wish to consider the extended role of Physician Assistant (Anaesthesia) or Surgical Care Practitioner. A career in operating department practice is exciting, rewarding, challenging and demanding, with many varied opportunities for personal development and role diversity. The University of Hull 15

21 I m so grateful to be doing such a great course in a faculty that supplies everything you need to achieve the position of Operating Department Practitioner. The course is demanding, challenging and rewarding and as students, we re supported by the University tutors and by mentors while on clinical placement. When I look back at what I knew before I started the course and what I now know, a year on, it s quite amazing. And there s still so much to learn and achieve: this is definitely a lifelong learning career. Emma Dickinson DipHE Operating Department Practice 18 The University of Hull

22 Additional Courses University Certificate in Practice Skills for Health and Social Care Health and Social Care Module Scheme The University Certificate in Practice Skills for Health and Social Care offers an introduction to academic study through bite-sized modules based on practice skills. The programme is ideal for those who may already be working in health and social care and who want to improve specific areas of knowledge and practice skills to increase employability, or for the learner who would like to undertake a professional qualification for example to qualify as a nurse, midwife or operating department practitioner but needs help to gain academic skills and the necessary qualifications for entry. You do not need to be employed in health and social care to undertake this programme, as all practice experience is undertaken in the faculty s excellent Centre for Clinical Skills simulated learning facility. Learners may undertake single modules of study through the Health and Social Care Module Scheme. The faculty is committed to widening participation in higher education and the University Certificate in Practice Skills for Health and Social Care aims to provide an open-access and vocationally relevant programme for health and social care practitioners, potential employees and people in caring roles. Aims and objectives The programme aims to offer a way into higher education for learners. It also aims to provide benefit to the health and social care sector, users and carers in the services. Through enhancing the vocational skills of practitioners it is projected that quality of care provision will improve. Distinctive features The programme has a number of distinctive features. This new learner will have ability and potential but not necessarily hold formal qualifications, as these are not required as entry criteria. The development of a programme structured around 10-credit modules at Level 4 provides students with the opportunity to access bite-size higher education experiences as part of the University Certificate or through individual modules. Many of the modules will be delivered at non-traditional times and via online learning to facilitate attendance by students in employment. Fit with existing provision The programme is designed to provide an academic stepping stone into existing academic provision. For example, 20 or 40 credits at Level 4 can be transferred to the DipHE Associate Practitioner (see page 20). Sixty credits at Level 4 will meet the academic entry requirements for our professional degree programmes. Programme planning will ensure that the correct modules are chosen for your preferred progression route. Entry requirements Literacy and numeracy at Level 2 are required to access this programme. Applicants are required to complete the University Certificate application form available via our website www2.hull.ac.uk/fhsc/courses-1/university-certificate.aspx. Assessment information Knowledge and understanding will be assessed through methods appropriate to each module including written assignment, portfolio of evidence, examination, presentation and demonstration of practice skills. Future career opportunities The University Certificate in Practice Skills programme is a parttime flexible programme which allows employees to continue to work while achieving their learning goals. Undertaking single modules through the Health and Social Care Module Scheme will enhance knowledge, practice skills and employability, and allow the learner to decide if further study is for them. Achievement of the University Certificate in Practice Skills for Health and Social Care award will demonstrate successful academic study at Level 4 and provide a 60-credit qualification which is transferable. You can transfer to the Associate Practitioner programme for further study or use the qualification as a stepping stone to professional registration programmes. Attendance requirements The flexible nature of the programme allows you to accumulate credits towards the University Certificate over a period of time. You may also negotiate a break from study to suit their individual commitments. Students registered for a module are recommended to attend all module sessions; it is a University requirement that students attend a minimum of 80% of a module to be eligible to be assessed in that module. Funding information Tuition fees are based on pro rata rates. Fees may be met by the employing organisation, a student self-financing or through a student loan from Student Finance England (conditions apply). Further details are available on application.
