4 Registering as External User If you are a potential applicant but not currently employed in a Victorian Government School you can also search and apply for job openings. Before you can use Recruitment Online to save jobs you are interested in, submit a resume to the talent pool or apply for a position, you must first register on Recruitment Online. Remember, you don t have to be a user or logon to complete a search of available jobs. To register as an External User, click the New User link.
5 Find vacancies using Recruitment Online Vacancies in Victorian government schools are open to all qualified applicants and are advertised as they arise through Recruitment Online. If you are a current-year or recent teacher graduate you should also look for vacancies under: Teacher Graduate Recruitment Program Teaching Scholarships The Teacher Graduate Recruitment Program assists recent teaching graduates to find a position in a Victorian government school. The program is additional to the Department's Teaching Scholarship Scheme. Both programs actively support the employment of graduates in government schools by identifying vacancies for recent graduates.
6 Teacher Graduate Recruitment program vacancies are only open to recent teaching graduates. You are considered a graduate if you have qualified as a teacher, graduated in the last four years and are not employed as a teacher by the Department at the time of the commencement of the employment. If you are a graduate you are eligible for employment as a teacher on the provision of evidence of course completion, through the presentation of an official academic record of your four-year tertiary study program that includes an approved course of teacher training. Principals may make a provisional offer on the clear understanding that you will need to present evidence of your completed qualifications and registration before your employment can be confirmed and you commence teaching. All teachers, including prospective teachers, must be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. If you are successful you will also be required to satisfy Department pre-employment requirements before commencing employment.
7 Trouble Shooting If you are experiencing difficulties using Recruitment Online, this information may assist you in resolving your problem. Assistance for Applicants The Applicant Help Manual is available on the Department s HR website. It provides a detailed explanation on how to access ROL. Time-out / Automatic Logout To ensure system security, Recruitment Online will automatically log you out after 20 minutes of inactivity. Regularly save your updates to ensure information is not lost. Using Internet Browser Controls Recruitment Online (ROL) does not operate correctly if you use your Internet Browser's (e.g. Internet Explorer, Safari, Mozilla...) navigation buttons. Do not click the Back or Forward buttons while in ROL.
8 Criteria SC1 Demonstrated understanding of initiatives in student learning including the Standards, the Principles of Learning and Teaching P-12 and Assessment and Reporting Advice and the capacity to implement curriculum programs consistent with their intent. SC2 Demonstrated high level classroom teaching skills and the capacity to work with colleagues to continually improve teaching and learning. SC3 Demonstrated ability to monitor and assess student learning data and to use this data to inform teaching for improved student learning. SC4 Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, parents and other staff. SC5 Demonstrated commitment and capacity to actively contribute to a broad range of school activities and a commitment to ongoing professional learning to enable further development of skills, expertise and teaching capacity.
9 Presentation of a Portfolio. Questions: Graduate Positions What are some of the new educational initiatives you are excited about implementing in your classroom relating to literacy or numeracy? At Carlton Gardens, we aim for purposeful planning. In your classroom you will have students with a diverse range of abilities. How are you going to cater for individual strengths and weaknesses within your classroom. How will you integrate ICT into your instruction/curriculum? Explain the structure of your discipline plan. What code of conduct will you establish in your classroom? If I walked into your classroom during reading time, what would I see? How do you measure student performance in your classroom and how do you use this data? Management of student behaviour is part of the daily work of a teacher and, in any given year, you could have a very challenging and diverse group of students. Please discuss the strategies you would use to negotiate these challenges.
10 Tips when applying When responding to any advertised position it is strongly recommended that you submit a specific response to the key selection criteria for the position to enhance the quality of your application. Review details on particular schools and geographical areas. See: Find a Early Childhood Service or School You can contact principals of the schools in which you are interested and discuss possible employment opportunities, including shorter-term and casual positions. Remember if you limit your availability, you will have to compete for limited vacancies. If you are reasonably flexible in your location preferences and if you are able to consider some rural locations, you will increase your chances of securing a position in a Victorian government school. If you are prepared to seek a position in country schools, or in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, these communities can often assist in finding accommodation and getting you settled. All offer great lifestyles and have relatively easy access to Melbourne.
11 Always tailor your application to the school. Too many applications end up being discarded due to lazy errors, so at least get the school name right. Make it hard for them NOT to interview you! Go through the job description with a fine tooth-comb and make some notes on what you think are the most important aspects of the job you're applying for. Once you feel you have a good handle on the role, you should then try and map your experiences to it. A covering letter is important. It is the gateway to your application. When responding to the criteria provide evidence not theory. Be aware of the school s initiatives and directions and respond to those. Don t write about play-based learning for example when the school s priority is literacy and numeracy
12 Wherever possible, read up as much as you can about the school you're applying to join. Therefore should you be invited to an interview, you can display an understanding of the successes of the school. This will make the panel see that you are serious about working at their particular school. Contact the school early in the process and if possible book in for a tour. Check the regions websites. They have a wealth of information regarding DEECD and region initiatives. Your application should be no more than ten pages (including your CV and covering letter. Often the school has more than one position advertised; make sure you apply for all to increase your chances. You are eligible to apply for all classroom positions as well as graduate positions. You will need qualifications to teach LOTE.
13 If asked to do a lesson as part of the interview then keep it simple and do one or two things well instead of doing lots of things badly. Have a plan B in place in case the technology doesn't work and try and 'hook' them immediately. Also use some of the names of the students. If possible ask a teacher to read your application. Listen and respond to any feedback. Work with your mentor teacher to tweak and fine tune your application. Are the positions advertised legitimate?????
