5 Basic Arrhythmia Course Course Description: Provide practice in dysrhythmia analysis and interpretation using a step-by-step approach. The course covers cardiac anatomy and physiology, ECG equipment, lead placement, ECG waveforms and intervals and troubleshooting pacemakers. It is Ideal for critical care nurses, cardiac technicians and any healthcare professional working with monitored patients. Course material and practice rhythm strips will be provided. Individual attention is paid to the understanding of the rhythm interpretation. Course Objectives: 1. Discusses Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology 2. Describe the principles of ECG & lead placement 3. Discusses different kinds of normal and abnormal EKG waveforms 4. Identify rhythms, practice session with Arrhythmia identification and management. 6 Basic and Advanced Hemodynamic Monitoring Course Description: This course will focus on hemodynamic monitoring, concentration will be on how to use and interpret hemodynamic data and waveforms in combination with vital signs, EKG changes, and patient assessment findings. Course Objectives: 1. Discuss Clinical significance of abnormal and normal hemodynamic waver forms A, C & V Waves 2. Explain the alterations in PAP, PCWP associated with diseases. 3. Demonstrate the process of accurate wave form readings errors/ variations in techniques. 4. Discuss trouble shooting causes of dampening, over-wedging, and catheter whip. 5. Discuss how PEEP affects wedge pressures & calculations to obtain accurate readings. 6. Simulate use of continuous cardiac output machine and SVo2 monitoring 7. Discuss shock states and treatment regimens in management of various types of shock. 7 Charge Nurse Workshop Course Description: This course is designed to prepare the registered nurse for the Charge Nurse Role. Principles of leadership, team building, communication techniques, delegation and service recovery will be presented. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of the Charge Nurse. 2. Describe common leadership styles and how they apply to the Charge Nurse Role. 3. Discuss effective communication techniques. 4. Summarize principles of delegation within the scope of professional nursing practice. 5. Identify elements of the Charge Nurse Hand-Off report to communicate key patient safety issues. 6. Describe strategies to create optimal patient assignments. 7. Identify Best Practices of the Charge Nurse to promote optimal patient outcomes. 8 CCRN Certification Review Course Course Description: This course is an intensive review of the Core Curriculum covering the most important areas of the new CCRN Certification Examination Blueprint. The course will provide system wise reviews of critical care areas in an exam point of view, increasing knowledge and boosting confidence in the students. The information is provided by a dynamic speaker in an entertaining way to enhance active learning. Course Objectives: 1. Describe subjects of major clinical importance and their diagnosis and management. 2. Discuss hemodynamic monitoring and waveform analysis in detail. 3. 9 Heart Failure Certification Review Course Course Description: This course will prepare Nurses to sit for the Certified Heart Failure Nurse (CHFN) exam. The content addressed in the course includes. This review course is based the 2013 ACCF/AHA Guidelines for the Management of Heart Failure. Course Objectives: 1. Discuss the pathophysiology of heart failure, the assessment of the heart failure patient, developing a plan of care. 2. Describe implementation of treatment strategies both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic & device treatment 3. 10 IV Therapy Class Course Description: All RN s at University Hospital require IV certification. The self-study IV module can be found in Moodle. The module consists of nine chapters and will take approximately six to seven hours to complete. You will also be required to get three successful IV sticks, the first is done in class. Come to class prepared to review, ask questions and take the exam. Course Objectives: Upon completion, the RN will be able to: 1. Discuss the role of IV therapy in relation to fluid and electrolyte balance 2. Discuss nursing interventions related to complications of IV therapy 3. 11 Managing Critically Ill Patients Course Description: This course is developed to assist students in managing critically ill patients especially in critical care areas. The course provides detailed instructions on major components of emergency management of the patient. Lessons involve code demonstrations and hands on experience with defibrillator and emergency code cart. The course is designed in a way to make sure learning through active involvement. Course Objectives: 1. Identify conditions that require emergency management. 2. Review patient assessment in emergencies. 3. Combined advanced and basic assessment skills. 4. Demonstrate use of defibrillator. 5. Topics to be covered include responsibilities and expectations of a nurse preceptor, adult learning principles, competency verification, and how to utilize effective feedback techniques. Course Objectives: 1. Identify the responsibilities and expectations of a nurse preceptor. 2. Identify three critical tasks of time management and their applications for preceptees. 3. Describe the theory behind reality shock triggers and effective ways to overcome them. 4. Describe adult learning principles and how to implement them to ensure identification of and accountability for diverse learning styles and multiple intelligences. 5. Describe the relationship among technical, interpersonal, and decision-making competence in competency verification. 6. Explain the nature of evaluations in terms of environment, topics, purpose, and establishment of definitive objectives for preceptorships. 15 Trauma Course Course Description: The Basic Trauma Course provides an introduction to the assessment and care of the traumatically injured patient. It includes a discussion of the Trauma system and the UH Trauma Team. Clinical concepts include initial assessment, mechanism of injury, trauma shock and blunt and penetrating system injuries. In addition special populations (pediatric, geriatric, and pregnant) will be included. Course Objectives: 1. Describe the organization of the Trauma System in New Jersey and the Trauma Team at UH. 2. Describe the kinematics of trauma, shock in Trauma, TBI and management. 3. Describe the traumatic injuries of different parts of the body and management. 4. Discuss pain management in trauma 5. Discuss in detail the topics such as trauma in pregnancy, intimate partner violence, pediatric and geriatric trauma, and thermal injuries.
