2 Madam, Sir, Conservation Agriculture constitutes a viable alternative to overcome the challenging water scarcity and basic natural resources degradation in the Mediterranean region which is dominated by rain fed agriculture In this context, it will be held, on May 3-5, 2010, at Sétif (Algeria) the 4 TH MEDITERRANEAN MEETING ON NO TILLAGE As with the previous meetings (Saragossa, Spain 2006 ; Tabarka, Tunisia 2004 and Settat, Morocco 2001) initiated within the framework activities of RCM (Mediterranean Field Crop Network hosted by FERT), this meeting will be an opportunity to exchange experiences, and ideas among Farmers, Technicians, Researchers and Policy Makers about Conservation Agriculture. This is especially an opportunity to address particularly the practices related to No Tillage and simplified cultivation techniques such as weed management, rotation, fallowing, cover crop and mechanization. The purpose of this first announcement is intended as an awareness of issues of Conservation Agriculture by offering you the opportunity to participate to this meeting under different forms: - Oral communication in the framework of the predefined themes by the Technical and Scientific Committee (TSC) which are listed below. - Poster on a topic related to the overall theme of Conservation Agriculture - Simple registration to participate to the 3-day program. The final program of this meeting will be elaborated in the coming weeks by the TSC, based on the expressed interest received after the first announcement In this context, you find below the themes for this event, the procedures for submitting an oral presentation or a poster and a pre- registration bulletin. Each session will include conferences, Farmers testimonial, free communications and porters related to the following topics: May 3 rd 2010 Morning session: Registration, Opening and presentation of Algerian case Presentation of Algerian Agriculture Definition of concepts of Conservation Agriculture (CA): No Till, TCS vs Conventional Tillage Research results and application of CA Afternoon session: Farmers testimony, principles and issues in CA Testimony of farmers (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Spain...) Principles and issues of CA Adaptation of crop management: N, diseases, pests Control of weed flora May 4 th 2010 Morning session: Soil and Fallow Management in Conservation Agriculture Soil management Fallow management Cover Crops Rotations: forage and food legumes Agriculture Opportunity Afternoon session: The integration of livestock (sheep and cattle) and development strategies, dissemination and adoption of CA The association cereal-sheep farming and compatibility with No Till Transition from conventional farming to No Till Environmental impact Policies favouring the adoption of CA
5 Symposium Proceedings Proceedings of the Fourth Mediterranean Meeting on No Tillage will be edited by CIHEAM- Saragossa IAMZ in the journal Options Méditerranéennes and also by INRAA, for local dissemination of the information. Registration and fees Registrations must be done no later than December 25 th, 2009, by sending the registration form filled in. People registered for a conference, an oral communication or a poster, (accepted by the TSC) are taken fully in charge for the hotel and catering by ATU-PAM. No fees are required. The participants to the seminar will be hosted in the down town hotels. The list of the hotels will be send with the second announcement of the meeting. Call for papers: deadline December 25 th, 2009 Oral or poster contributions are accepted for all sessions, the abstract should be sent by E_mail, along with the registration form filled in before December 25 th, Language The languages used during the seminar are Arabic, English and French.
