For each goal, provide significant progress made during the reporting period. Education 1. AC Education Goal A: Work with the Institute for Oklahoma Education, the Regents for Higher Education and the Ok Dept of Career and Technical Education and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a seamless education system. o Education workgroup met January 31 focusing on Articulation Agreements. Recommendation to seek approval from the State Regents for Higher Education to approve a new chemistry course for nurses or adjust a current chemistry course. (most likely to be on the September 2014 agenda) This would allow for a common general education core for all nursing students.

2 o Oklahoma currently has statewide articulation agreements but each of the levels are different. Plans are in place to develop a survey so that we can identify what schools have agreements and what they are for: (LPN to RN and RN to BSN) o The State Regents for Higher Education have a resource for faculty and students to use to better understand course equivalencies: This resource has been in place for a quite a few years, but many of the deans and directors of nursing programs are not aware of it so we are working to make sure they are aware of the resource by sharing it with them on Friday (Feb 14, 2014) at a joint meeting of the Deans and Directors in Oklahoma. AC Education Goal B: Nurse Employers and other relevant stakeholders to encourage RN to obtain higher degrees of education. o Many employers are encouraging Nurses with associate degrees to get their BSN. Examples include: OU Medical Center, Mercy Health Center, INTEGRIS Hospital system with several campuses in Oklahoma, Duncan Regional Hospital, Oklahoma State Department of Health, McBride Orthopedic and Bone and Joint Hospital. o Ruth Eckenstein and Jane Nelson both discussed this issue with Colleen Hirshkorn, RN, MPA and the work we are doing around this. o Planning an article for the Oklahoma Nurse (state publication that goes to every RN and LPN in the state) on Resources and Reasons to achieve a BSN. 2. Are students enrolled via one of the four identified promising models of education progression? Yes No If yes, check all that apply: RN to BSN Degrees Awarded by Community Colleges RN to MSN Programs State or Regional Competency Based Programs State or Regional Shared Curriculum Other: We are working with schools of nursing and faculty on articulation LPN to RN & RN to BSN as well as a central application process. 3. Through efforts of your AC, has the state community college association agreed to help inform/recruit ADNs to advance their education? Yes No If yes, briefly explain: The ADN programs are working to encourage students to continue their education beyond the prelicensure program. Some of the ADN programs have had RN to BSN programs on their campuses and/or articulation agreements between the two programs. As of 1/2014 Page 2

3 Leadership 1. AC Leadership Goal A: Survey Nurse Leaders to identify nurse leaders interested in serving on work group; identify leadership roles that are filled by a nurse; and better understand nurse leaders interpretation of leadership opportunities and the barriers to these positions. o Survey results have been analyzed and included in a Jonas Scholar presentation. This presentation was then turned in to an article for the Oklahoma Nurse that will be mailed the end of February. o Working to set a date for the first Leadership Workgroup meeting. Pending date is April 27 as part of a larger meeting on Evidence Based Practice. AC Leadership Goal B: Collaboration with schools of nursing to ensure the curriculum focuses on leadership skills o No progress 2. Has your AC implemented new selected and proven successful leadership program to prepare nurses to lead change to advance health? What is the number of nurses appointed to a board in your state as a result of the AC from November 2013 to January 2014 (e.g. hospital board, task force, commission, committee)? 29 list provided below 12 of which were Submitted to ANA/ANF: This is a result of us collecting this information because of the Future of initiative but not sure we can contribute the appointments were to our work. AC Practice & Care Goal A: Identify the barriers to APRNs practicing to the full extent of their education and training o Crosswalked current NPA with Consensus Document and identified the differences at this point it is only practice issues: Adding the word Independent Eliminating supervision of Prescriptive Authority o Continuing to find avenues to set an appointment with the Governor regarding the NGA whitepaper. AC Practice & Care Goal B: Collaborate with stakeholders regarding the removal of barriers and align APRN roles to be consistent with nationally recognized core competencies. o Development of a Communication tree to reach all APRNs in the state that includes an approval process for message content o Working on mechanism to get APRNs involved in Advocacy. AONP has developed a survey and plans to educate based on results of the survy o APRN specialty associations hosting Day at the Capitol in conjunction with ONA s Nurses Day at the Capitol as a way to make sure that APRNs develop relationships with their elected officials and are comfortable in telling their story. o Development of electronic materials about the different APRN groups and the role each play in the delivery of health care. 6 3. Has your AC advanced favorable state policy to remove barriers to care provided by APRNs? Yes No If yes to 2 or 3, briefly explain: Coalition of APRN groups was formed to legislatively work on removal of barriers to APRN practice. This is not an Action Coalition initiative. The coalition is called OnFire Development of a two-year plan with the first year focused on developing legislative partners and educating grassroots participants. Diversity 1. AC Diversity Goal A: o Diversity Conference with Barbara Nichols scheduled for March Does your AC have a diversity Plan? Yes No Diversity is important but we don t have a specific plan. We are working to include it diversity into every action item. Oklahoma is a diverse culture. Data 1. AC Data Goal A: Achieve consensus from licensing boards around a minimum data set o The Oklahoma Health Improvement Plan Health Care Workforce Workgroup is planning a Summit - April 2, which is funded by NGA. Objectives for this strategy session include: o Consensus on data sets o Working to make that APRNs and included in provider numbers especially in primary care. AC Data Goal B: o Hospital vacancy turnover received from Ok Hospital Association. Capacity Building (strategic planning, organizational structure, funding, etc.) Reminder: Please update your AC s attached funding chart with specific instances of cash grants or donations. 1. Will be available nationally for a fee and free to Oklahoma Nurses. Movement on partnership between education and hospital in the creation/development of a statewide Nurse Residency program.
