New course description: ntroduces students to core principles and practices in computer and network security. Covers the fundamentals of computer/network security including general security concepts; threats and vulnerabilities; application, data and host security; access control and identity management; basics of cryptography; and compliance and operational/organizational security. Current topics in computer security such as cloud computing security and application programming development security also are discussed. Course materials prepare students for the vendor-neutral CompTA Security+ industry certification exam. Lab fee required. Prerequisite: case 210 or equivalent. SET FORTH THE RATONALE FOR THS ~ROPOSAl:! This course builds on fundamentals discussed in easc 210 (Computer Hardware/Software Support). Summer
5 We are requesting that cesc 210 becomes a pre-requisite for the course cesc 332 as soon as possible because the material discussed in cesc 210 is a necessary foundation to what is addressed in cesc 332. We request that the implementation of such change should take effect in Spring 2015 instead of Fall 2015 to ensure that students in cesc 332 will benefit the most from taking such course. When cesc 332 was proposed, cesc 210 was not in place yet thus it could not have become a pre-requisite for cesc 332. Letting students continue taking cesc 332 without prior completion of cesc 210 will create several problems: 1. The instructor will be required to cover some of the basics for students who did not complete cesc 210, thus reducing the amount of material discussed in cesc 332; 2. The students who are not already familiar with the material discussed in cesc 210 will struggle more, compared to those who completed successfully cesc 210; 3. The more students complete cesc 332 without taking cesc 210 as pre-requisite, the more chances there will be that future students will complain about having to take cesc 210 before cesc 332, thus adding workload to the Academic Program Specialist, the Academic Program Coordinator, the Academic Program Director, the Division Chair, and possibly members of higher levels of administration. For these reasons, we request that adding cesc 210 as pre-requisite for the course cesc 332 should be implemented as soon as possible, in Spring 2015.
