4 DESCRIBE THE REQUESTED COURSE/PROGRAM ACTION (additional pages may be attached if necessary): The name of the certificate will change from "Information Design" to "User Experience Design". The certificate requirements will change in the following way: Required Courses: IDIA Interaction and Interface Design IDIA Information Architecture IDIA Research Methods IDIA640 - Humans, Computers, and Cognition New requirement This adds two new required classes. Currently, two classes are required and students choose two from a list of 7. The catalog description changes to: This 12-credit graduate Certificate in User Experience Design is intended for communication or information professionals who want to acquire demonstrable competence in the techniques and concepts required for the emerging field of user experience design. By including a range of disciplines such as interaction design, user research, information architecture and related fields, the program prepares students to construct an online information space and to create a user experience that balances the business goals, content collection and user needs. Classes are offered evenings and weekends. The certificate can also be completed exclusively online. Criteria for Admission in the catalog should read: Qualifications: a bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited college or university. SET FORTH THE RATIONALE FOR THIS PROPOSAL: In order to continue to differentiate our program offerings with competing USM school programs and to use language that is currently being used in industry, we need to change the "Certificate in Information Design"'s title to "Certificate in User Experience Design". "User experience" is professionally abbreviated as "UX" in the industry. This will also help differentiate between our own programs that contain the word "Information" in the title. The other program action is to change the course requirements to be more specific. Currently, there are two required courses and two "electives" students can choose. By requiring four classes, students will be exposed to the set of skills that employers are looking for. This should increase enrollment and make our graduates more desirable to employers as well as make it easier in planning course enrollments. Summer

6 UNIVERSITY OF BALTIMORE POST BACCALAUREATE CERTIFICATE IN USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN UB currently offers a PBC in Information Design that is fully within one degree program: M.S. in Interaction Design and Information Architecture. This proposal is for two substantial changes to the PBC: 1. To change the title to Post Baccalaureate Certificate in User Experience (UX) Design. The name change is to align with how the field is referenced by that industry. According to a 2015 report by the Education Advisory Board titled Market Demand and Progrom Overviewfor Online Master's in User Experience, the "user experience" name is the standard for both students and employers. "UX" is the industry abbreviation for this skillset. The certificate will remain within the MS degree program. 2. To remove the option of two electives and instead require four defined courses. By requiring these four classes, students will be exposed to the defined set of skills that employers are looking for. Centrality to the Mission of University of Baltimore This certificate program supports the University of Baltimore Mission by providing innovative education to a diverse population and combining theory and practice to create meaningful, realworld solutions. The ability to complete the Certificate online also supports the University's mission of making excellence accessible to traditional and nontraditional students who are motivated by professional advancement. Market Demand The Certificate has been and is expected to continue to be a high demand program at UB. According to is an expected 18% lo-year job growth in this field. The PBC can lead to a number of different careers and future projects. Usability researchers are important to companies that evaluate technology as well as the Federal government. With the growing number of technology companies in Maryland, interaction designers and information architects are highly desirable. Jobs can relate to large information systems, web-based applications, or mobile technologies, all of which are among high demand professions. A number of for-profit institutions are beginning to offer classes in this field. UB - PBC in User Experience (UX) Design Page 2of3
7 Curriculum Design Currently, the 12-credit program requires two courses and gives students the option of choosing two elective courses from a list to complete the certificate. The proposed certificate curriculum remains at 12 credits and features four required courses only. Current Required: IDIA 612 (Interaction and Interface Design) IDIA 642 (Research Methods) Choose two electives from: IDIA 616 (Designing for Mobile Web) IDIA 618 (Dynamic Web Sites) IDIA 619 (Interactive Multimedia) IDIA 630 (Information Architecture) IDIA 640 (Humans, Computers and Cognition) IDIA 750 (Special Topics) APPL603 (Learning and Cognition) Proposed Required: IDIA 612 (Interaction and Interface Design) IDIA 642 (Research Methods) IDIA 630 (Information Architecture) IDIA 640 (Humans, Computers, and Cognition) Faculty Resources Faculty teaching in the proposed program will come primarily from the current faculty in the Division of Science, Information Arts, and Technologies. Bridget Blodgett, Assistant Professor, received a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. Her work is focused on communities within virtual worlds and other Internet-based media as well as recent issues within the online gaming community involving gender, inclusiveness, and identity. Lucy Holman, Director of Langsdale Library, received a Doctor of Communications Design from the University of Baltimore and has an M.S.L.S. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Deborah Koht Associate Professor, received a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Kohl is the chair of the Division of Science, Information Arts, and Technologies and teaches research methods and cognitive psychology at the graduate level.
