Baylor College of Dentistry BCD volunteers care for hundreds of children at back-to-school fair Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) students, along with faculty and staff volunteers, cared for more than 800 students during the 12th annual Dallas Mayor s Back-to-School Fair August 7, 2008, at Fair Park in Dallas. The BCD booth provided mini-screenings for students and applied fluoride varnish to their teeth. The fair was free for Dallas school children who come from low-income families. If the children visited four categories of service providers such as HSC-BCD, they received free school supplies. Seal Mobile takes a road trip
Baylor College of Dentistry third-year dental students Ms. Karina Mendoza and Mr. Trevor Harrison traveled 1,080 miles round trip during Thanksgiving week with Dr. Stephen Crane, Assistant Professor of Public Health Sciences, to bring the Seal Mobile to elementary students in the remote southwest Texas town of Sanderson. The students provided sealants to 30 students at Sanderson Elementary School, nearly half of the student population. Sanderson is nearly three hours away from the nearest dentist. Throughout the year, the Seal Mobile makes stops at Dallas area schools participating in the Dallas County Sealant Initiative, in which fourth-year dental students place sealants on second-grade students permanent molars and assess their oral health needs. Many of these students have never seen a dentist. SNDA walk supports oral cancer awareness Baylor College of Dentistry s Student National Dental Association (SNDA) hosted a 5K walk/run to promote oral cancer awareness. The Oral Cancer Run/Walk was held Saturday, April 26, at Fair Park in Dallas. Free oral cancer screenings were performed during the event. Proceeds benefited the National Cancer Center Foundation and also help subsidize biopsies performed at the college for patients who qualify for financial assistance.
Volunteers offer cleanings, sealants The Asian-American Dental Society at Baylor College of Dentistry hosted the spring Sealant Day March 8 in the pediatric dentistry clinic at the college. Seventy-one BCD dental and dental hygiene student volunteers staffed the biannual event, which this spring provided care to 75 patients ages 4 to 16. Additional staffing was offered by 16 volunteers from predental clubs at area universities. Faculty, pediatric residents, and ADS alumni also were present. Research Walther attends research meeting in Beijing Baylor College of Dentistry third-year dental student Mr. Russell Walther traveled to Beijing, China, October 29 November 2, 2007, to participate in Forum 11, the annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research, an international nongovernmental organization whose mission is to focus research efforts on the health of the poor. During the Beijing meeting, Walther and nine other essay participants presented their papers at a session hosted by The Lancet s editor in chief Dr. Richard Horton.
Awards Roach becomes first recipient of dental hygiene endowed scholarship The first recipient of the new Ausmus Laursen Dental Hygiene Scholarship was selected this spring. Ms. Jeanette Roach graduated in May with a bachelor s degree in dental hygiene and is now a dental hygienist at Southfork Dental, a private general practice in Murphy, Texas. The Ausmus Laursen scholarship is designated for dental hygiene students such as Roach who demonstrate community service, academic achievement, financial need, and the motivation for a long and successful career in dental hygiene. Nelson receives scholarship Ms. LeeAnne Nelson, senior dental hygiene student at Baylor College of Dentistry and Student American Dental Hygienists Association president, received the Nicole Eusebio Memorial Service Scholarship from the Texas Dental Hygienists Society at the Texas SADHA annual session February 9 in Austin. More than half of the college s dental hygiene students attended the session.
Hoffman receives scholarship Mr. David Hoffman, a third-year dental student at Baylor College of Dentistry, received the Annual Scholarship Award for outstanding academic achievements in dentistry April 22 from the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Rivera receives scholarship Ms. Beatriz Rivera, a second-year dental hygiene student at Baylor College of Dentistry, accepted the BJ Long Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Dallas Dental Hygienists Society on February 26 at Student Night. The award is based on academic accomplishment, leadership, professional goals, and need.
Carmen Briceno receives the Milo Hellman Award Dr. Carmen Elena Briceno, a 2007 orthodontics graduate student at Baylor College of Dentistry, received the Milo Hellman Award May 19, 2008, at the American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting in Denver. The award is the premier research award in orthodontics; it recognizes original work of unusual merit and significance. Meng receives fellowship Dr. Joseph Meng, a resident in Baylor College of Dentistry s graduate prosthodontic program, was the recipient of the 2007 Henry M. Thornton/Student Clinicians-American Dental Association Fellowship. Meng accepted his award during the SCADA Student Clinician Research Program September 28-30, 2007, in San Francisco.
Leadership Students attend Lobby Day in Washington Baylor College of Dentisty second-year dental student Mr. Esteban Garza and fourth-year dental student Ms. Saosat Olatunbosun participated in the annual National Dental Student Lobby Day, March 10-11, in Washington, DC. The event is hosted by the American Dental Education Association and the American Student Dental Association and offers a unique opportunity for dental students to get involved in the policymaking that can impact their future profession. Other Students spend week as externs More than 70 fourth-year dental students participated in Baylor College of Dentistry s Community Preceptor Program throughout the year. Participating students worked for one- to two-week periods as externs alongside practicing dentists in dental offices and public health dental clinics. Most preceptors are general dentists in private practice in small town, suburban, or rural settings. Other preceptorship opportunities exist in dental health clinics serving veterans, AIDS patients, and underserved populations.
White coat ceremony celebrates student milestone Members of the second-year dental class at the Baylor College of Dentistry marked their transition into the patient-care phase of their dental education in a formal ceremony February 11 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Each student was presented with a special white coat embroidered with the college s logo and adorned with a Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association lapel pin. The coats were furnished by the Alumni Association.
