INTRODUCTION The Student Ministries Handbook provides an overview of the Student Ministries Program of Kingswood University. The Handbook describes our philosophy, objectives, program administration, and participant requirements. A summary of forms used, types and descriptions of approved Student Ministries, and a recommended schedule of these ministries is also provided. At Kingswood, the Student Ministries Program is an integral part of training students to meet the challenge of ministry in this decade and beyond. Your careful study of the Student Ministries Handbook will help this office better serve you whether you are a student or a prospective Student Ministries supervisor. PHILOSOPHY Service is an integral part of the training program at Kingswood. Jesus Christ Himself is our model:... the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve... (Matthew 20:28). Jesus demonstrated this servant attitude when He taught and fed crowds of thousands, when He dealt individually with outcasts like Zaccheus and the Samaritan woman, and when He washed the feet of His twelve disciples, saying, I have set you an example, that you should do as I have done for you... Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:15 & 17). With such a powerful example and glorious promise for inspiration, Kingswood s Student Ministries Program supports the mission of the school in the following ways: 1. Students are helped to develop a sound knowledge of the Scriptures by experiencing opportunities both to articulate their faith and to integrate biblical truths with practical concerns of life. 2. Students are enabled to develop ministry skills for a life of godly obedience and service as they practice these various skills in supervised settings in local churches, community agencies, or in University ministry opportunities. At Kingswood we believe that practical application of theoretical principles is vital. Therefore, student ministry assignments are designed to allow students to integrate classroom learning and practical ministry. The felt concern and practical input from the faculty in developing, coordinating, implementing, and supervising the Student Ministries Program will enhance the personal growth and vocational skills of the student. 3

OBJECTIVES Student Ministries provide the student with opportunities to integrate information, principles, and skills learned in the classroom with practical field ministry. As a result of involvement in Student Ministries, students should: 1. Cognitive (head - what is known) gain insight into the types of vocational and service opportunities available in the church and the community discover and develop personal spiritual gifts and skills for ministry 2. Attitudinal (heart- what is felt) cultivate a sensitivity to see needs and appropriately respond to them out of genuine Christian love develop the desire to live selflessly, to give sacrificially, and to love whole-heartedly for the sake of Christ gain an appreciation for the local church, God s agency for the propagation of the Gospel 3. Behavioral (hands- what is done) develop ministry placement skills including interviewing and supervisor and site assessment skills develop leadership qualities of planning, organizing, initiating, directing, supervising, and evaluating display growth in the virtues of faithfulness, dependability, responsibility, submission, and commitment to Christ and His church show evidence of a renewed dependence on the Lord for wisdom and ability to serve. increase personal confidence through positive service experience experience meaningful and productive service which will serve as a long-term incentive for future ministry articulate doctrine and biblical knowledge in a context other than the university environment develop cooperative working relationships in a variety of situations with various age groups develop skills in self-evaluation and reflective thinking in order to promote selfawareness 4

STUDENT MINISTRIES OFFICE ADMINISTRATION The Director of Student Ministries (currently the Vice President for Academic Affairs) is responsible for planning, promoting, and supervising the Student Ministries Program at Kingswood University. The Director works closely with faculty members in the area of evaluating and counselling students. Faculty advisors share in the responsibility of advising students to ensure that Student Ministry assignments meet program objectives and students vocational goals. A brief summary of the Director s responsibilities is as follows: 1. arrange and give leadership to all areas of Kingswood s Student Ministries Program 2. coordinate Student Ministry assignments by working in harmony with local churches and agencies 3. encourage students to put the required effort into their ministry assignments 4. periodically evaluate each student s ministry and keep records of these evaluations 5. assign student grades for this program and report grades to the Registrar for recording on the student s permanent academic record 6. be responsible to the Academic Dean for the performance of these duties SUPERVISORS A Student Ministries supervisor may be a pastor, local church leader, agency personnel, faculty member, or other responsible person approved by the Director. Supervisors play a vital role in the Student Ministries Program and help ensure a positive experience for all participants. It is our expectation that supervisors will: 1. become partners with Kingswood University in the training and development of each student 2. get to know the student and establish a warm, open relationship 3. provide reasonable and clearly communicated expectations for each ministry assignment 4. provide adequate observation of the student worker in order to instruct, encourage, and challenge as appropriate 5. schedule at least one meeting per month with the student for feedback and evaluation, 6. contact the Student Ministries Director in case of problems in which cooperative effort is needed 7. prepare and return the Supervisor Evaluation Report at the end of the semester as indicated on the report form (see page 25). Please review the Supervisor Evaluation Report with the student Communications and suggestions regarding the Student Ministries Program are appreciated. 5

STUDENTS 1. Selecting an Assignment Students are encouraged to seek appropriate ministry opportunities in consultation with their faculty advisor and with the approval of the Director of Student Ministries. When necessary, the Director will assist students in securing ministry assignments. Students should select level ministry assignments during their first and second years of study and level assignments during their third and fourth years of study. No changes in assignment may be made without the prior approval of the supervisor and the Director. Specific opportunities for ministry will vary from year to year according to the needs of churches and agencies. Students are limited to one student ministry credit which can be completed in a week. 2. Faithful Involvement Student Ministry assignments require involvement throughout the entire semester. The student must take the initiative in faithfully fulfilling this obligation. However, in the event an absence is necessary, the student must contact the supervisor well in advance of the assignment. Preparation and prayer for each ministry assignment requires the student s best effort. Faithful attendance and punctuality is of vital importance to the success of any ministry assignment. 3. Dress and Deportment Classroom wear is appropriate for many Student Ministry assignments; however, students should dress in keeping with the occasion and situation. Students should consult with the ministry supervisor concerning appropriate dress. Students are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct as articulated in the Kingswood Student Handbook. In conduct, speech, and attitude students should show themselves to be exemplary - friendly, courteous, gracious, cooperative, and helpful. 6

REQUIREMENTS GENERAL GUIDELINES Before a student may begin their first Student Ministry they must have passed Wellness (GE 100), or have met with the Director of Student Ministries to review the administration of student ministries, writing requirements, and reflective thinking. Each student in a bachelor s degree program must earn a minimum of three credits in Student Ministries to meet graduation requirements. Students in the General Education Associates degree program must earn two student ministry credits. After the first year, and upon approval by the Director of Student Ministries, a student may earn a credit each summer in addition to credits which will be earned during the school year. Regardless of the number of activities in which a student may be involved, only one Student Ministry credit can be earned each semester or summer. Exceptions may be made for the inclusion of one-week (40-hour minimum) intensive ministry assignments. To ensure diversity in ministry experiences, a student must earn five different Student Ministry credits. The Director of Student Ministries may permit a credit to be repeated in consecutive semesters one time only. Each student is expected to be involved in eleven weekly assignments requiring a minimum of three hours per week. The three hours includes responsible preparation, performance of task, and any necessary consultation with field or faculty supervisors. This required time does not include travel, attending worship services, or other normal involvement (unless the latter constitutes a part of the student s ministry assignment). Students register for Student Ministries credit during pre-registration. All Student Ministry assignments must have the prior approval of both the supervisor and the Director of Student Ministries. To validate a Student Ministry, the completed Student Ministries Contract must be submitted to the Director of Student Ministries by the end of the tenth day of classes in any given semester. Students who do not submit a contract must complete a Drop/Add form to avoid receiving an F grade for the ministry. Failure to complete a Student Ministry after registering and submitting a completed Contract will also result in a grade of F. While the University values ministry experience gained prior to enrolment in one of Kingswood s programs, credit will only be granted for Student Ministry assignments completed while enrolled as either a part-time or full-time student in one of the regular University programs. 1. Church Credits All B.A. (Ministry) students should earn at least three church credits. All Wesleyan B.A. (Ministry) students should earn the three church credits in a Wesleyan church. Non-Wesleyan students should earn the three church credits in a church of their denomination. One of the church credits must be completed in the student s third or fourth year. 2. School Credits All B.A. (Christian School Education) students should earn at least three credits in a Christian school. One of the three school credits must be completed in the student s third or fourth year 7

ASSIGNMENT SELECTION Students are encouraged to seek appropriate ministry opportunities in consultation with their faculty advisor and with the approval of the Director of Student Ministries. If a student is unable to secure an appropriate Student Ministry assignment, the Director will assist in this process REGISTRATION PROCESS All Student Ministry assignments must have the prior approval of both the supervisor and the Director of Student Ministries. Failure to confirm prior approval will result in no grade being issued for that ministry. The process for approval is not completed until the Student Ministries Contract is signed by the Director of Student Ministries. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that Student Ministry assignments are appropriate for the program and vocational objectives of each student. FORMS/REPORTS The following forms will be used to monitor progress and evaluate the student during his/her period of study at Kingswood. Copies of these forms/reports are available from the Director s office or the Kingswood website: kingswood.edu/academics/student-ministry-handbook-forms/ 1. Problems or concerns that arise during a Student Ministry should be reported to the Director of Student Ministries for prayer, counsel, and supportive assistance. Unless a Student Ministry assignment requires attendance at a non-wesleyan church for Sunday services it is expected that Wesleyan students will attend a Wesleyan church on Sundays. When possible, students will be placed in churches of their own denomination for Student Ministry assignments. GRADING Grading of Student Ministry assignments will be based on the following: 1. Effective and consistent fulfillment of the Student Ministry assignment. 2. Self-Evaluation Log, Journal, and Reflection Paper (50%) 3. Supervisor Evaluation Report (50%) It is important to note that all requirements for the Student Ministry assignment must be met in a satisfactory manner. The Student Ministry Contract must be completed and returned to the Director s office prior to the beginning of a Student Ministry assignment to be eligible for credit. Failure to complete the Student Self-Evaluation Report Requirements will result in the loss of the Student Ministry credit and a grade of F for that Student Ministry. See Objectives on page 4 for areas of reflections. Each entry must include the date of the ministry activity and the date of the journal entry. See samples of Student Ministry journals on page 23. Part IV Reflection Paper (15%) Submit a 500 1,000 word typed reflection paper about your Student Ministry assignment. Describe the ministry and tell about the rewards, challenges, lessons learned, and areas in which you have struggled. Tell what you have been able to apply to your ministry that you have learned in the classroom. Share what you have learned about ministry and about yourself. Tell what you might do differently another time and the things that have worked well. Include comments re your personal goals that were stated in your contract. Include a word count. Part V Suggestion of a Grade (5%) 24

Based on how well you feel you did in the entire assignment in preparations, performance, and evaluation (log, journal, reflection paper) suggest the grade that you feel fairly represents your work and give a brief statement of why. SAMPLE STUDENT MINISTRY JOURNAL Sample 1 Ministry Date: Tuesday, February 7 Date of Journal Entry: Thursday, February 9 This week at chorale was a pretty routine practice session. As I reflect on the session I am impressed by the director s ability to show up and focus on routine assignments. Routine and consistency are sometimes confused with mundane and boring. I think that mundane and boring are attitude choices that we must make in most of the regular activities of life. When I am at my best I choose to engage fully in each activity, regardless of how many times I have repeated that activity. Someone once said that the ultimate power is the power to choose one s own attitude. 101 words Sample 2 Ministry Date: Sunday, March 26 Date of Journal Entry: Sunday, March 26 Today I taught the grade 3 and 4 Sunday school class. The class seemed especially rowdy. Perhaps it was the red Kool-Aid and chocolate served prior to class that caused it. They kept getting louder and louder and I raised my voice continually to quiet them. It was very frustrating. Then I remembered the quiet technique that we talked about in Introduction to Ministry class. As I spoke more quietly the children got quiet too. Oops and wow! My yelling was adding to the problem not solving it. I wish I had processed what was going on sooner rather than waiting until I was so frustrated. If I had anticipated it I could have avoided frustrating the children. I wonder how God felt. 123 words 25
