5 HOW VOIP STARTED Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol networks, such as the Internet. In 1995, the first company in the history of voice over internet protocol put a product on the market. They released Internet Phone Software, which in combination with a home computer, sound card, speakers, microphone and modem allowed users to make a phone call over the internet. However, the people on both ends had to have the same setup, and sound quality was much less than on a normal phone.
6 HOW VOIP STARTED In 1998, there were more milestones in the history of voice over internet protocol. Entrepreneurs began to recognize the potential of the technology and soon computerto-phone and phone-to-phone connections (still using a computer for the transmission) were possible for making voice calls over the internet. The service was available using a phone at a provider's location in North America only. Businesses began to use VOIP over their intranets to help communicate within their company. But with the introduction of switching equipment in 1998 by 3 manufacturing companies, the history of voice over internet protocol took a turn towards the future.

21 VOICE OVER IP COMBINES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE CUSTOMER The Client is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric generation and transmission cooperative, which produces and supplies wholesale electricity to 10 electric distribution cooperatives in central Illinois. Their distribution cooperatives provide retail electric service to approximately 78,000 consumers within their local service territories. The Client is one of more than 60 generation and transmission (G&T) cooperatives that supply wholesale electricity to rural utilities in the United States. The Client owns and operates approximately 590 miles of transmission lines at 138 kv, 69 kv and 34.5 kv; 141 MW of oil and gas-fired peaking units; and 79 distribution and transmission substations to serve its members. The Client is also one of nine public utility partners in the Prairie State Generating Company (PSGC), a limited liability corporation responsible for the ownership, construction and operation of the Prairie State Energy Campus (PSEC). The PSEC is a 2 unit 1600 megawatt supercritical electric generation station that came on line in The Client owns an 8.22% share of the output of the two units at PSEC, providing 130MWs of low cost, clean coal generation to the Client and its members.
22 VOICE OVER IP COMBINES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE ENVIRONMENT The new headquarters building in Springfield, IL was being remodeled to include a modern data center, as well as an updated inside plant cable infrastructure. The new building was to be connected to the old headquarters in Jacksonville, which would serve as the backup control center facility, via dark fiber, allowing seamless VLAN connectivity between locations. CHALLENGE The existing VOIP system was dated, difficult to manage, had no resilient capabilities, and lacked a robust support infrastructure. The Client needed a solution which provided core phone functionality, fully integrated communications with voice mail, chat, and , call recording, and the ability to support multiple locations. It was critical that the solution provided a level of resilience that met or exceeded the expectations of their control center and their customers.
23 VOICE OVER IP COMBINES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE SOLUTION The Client made the decision to move forward with a Cisco Unified Communications solution, combined with a Zoom call recording system, and implemented by Sentinel Technologies. A pair of redundant Cisco Unified Communications hardware suites were installed in the Springfield and Jacksonville locations with redundant VOIP routers, each having its own SIP trunk and FXO failover lines. Sentinel worked with AT&T in order to allow for a failover solution for incoming calls that would re-route all phone traffic to the secondary SIP in the event of a failure of the primary SIP or VOIP router. In the event of a complete SIP failure, all FXO lines were configured to provide backup communications capabilities through the phone system. The Cisco Unified communication suite provided their users with a system that not only provided basic phone functionality, but also added many capabilities through the computer-based Jabber client including chat, voice mail integration, call history, and the ability to use the computer as a soft phone.
24 VOICE OVER IP COMBINES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE In addition, the voice mail system was integrated with their Microsoft Exchange environment in order to provide access to voice mail messages as attachments to messages. This allowed mobile users to access voice mail through their device without the requirement to dial into the core voice mail system. The Zoom call recording system was integrated into their existing VM environment, and provides two call recording servers that handle calls from the two control center locations.
25 VOICE OVER IP COMBINES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE RESULTS As a result of Sentinel s work with Cisco, Zoom, and AT&T, The Client now has a Unified Communication solution that meets the current user and control center requirements, and can grow with the company to meet future requirements, such as the recording of dispatch radio communications. Sentinel, Cisco, and Zoom have all provided very good support of the phone system, and have the bench depth to continue to provide that support well into the future.
