St Vincent Health / St Joseph Hospital Radiography Program Meeting Minutes MEETING: Advisory Board Meeting PRESENT: See Attached List CALL TO ORDER: 9:00 am PRESIDING: LOCATION: Radiology Classroom TOPIC DISCUSSION / CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATION ACTION / FOLLOW-UP TARGET DATE ASSIGN / RESPONS Call to Order / Reflection Introductions / Welcome New Member Kristen read Thank You Lord For the Simple Things to open the meeting. None Approval of December 2012 Minutes Minutes from December 2012 meeting were reviewed and approved as submitted. None Follow-up from December Meeting ABHES Update Because of ARRT s requirement that Continue to monitor ABHES all exam candidates have a degree in 2015, the recognition by AART and defining program is intent on becoming institutionally the academic institution within St. accredited. To do so through ABHES, St. Vincent V Health. Health will need to establish an academic entity. Mark and others internally presented to Darcy Burthay, CNO, a proposal to establish a St. Vincent Health College of Health Professions to house both the Rad and EMS programs. Darcy was very enthusiastic and will work with Mark and others to establish such an entity. Once ABHES accredited, sponsorship of the Rad program will move away from St. Joseph, which Kathy Young and Kathy Peoples support. Hopefully the ABHES application will be submitted by the end of July Ongoing, update in December
Image Analysis WBT s Update Kevin reported that 60 techs have taken the Lower Extremity (Part 1) WBT. Lower Extremity (Part 2) WBT is in production with a possible fall release. Kathy Holton asked why techs cannot receive CE for completing the image analysis WBTs. Mark responded that ASRT requires access to the WBTs in the same manner as associates (though SEED) which was not permitted when WBTs were in development. Kathy Peoples suggested looking into adding an ASRT reviewer as a nonassociate, which is already done in other situations. Mark will contact ASRT about identifying a reviewer. Check into adding an ASRT reviewer as a non-associate for CE approval of WBTs. Notify MI departments when Lower Extremity Part 2 is released. ASAP Fall Trauma/Surgery Rotations Dave reported a log was implemented to track trauma radiography exams by day and shift. Following a 3 month tracking, no real pattern emerged. Historically Friday and Saturday evenings are heavy trauma shifts so the program will be piloting St Vincent Indy students rotating W/F/S in trauma during the academic year. Following a year of student tracking, the program will either roll out trauma rotations to all students or return to the current practice of evening M/W/F assignments. Pilot St Vincent Indy students on W/F/S trauma rotations during the and track their experiences. Ongoing, update in December David Sidor New Business Image Quality and the Changing Culture in Medical Imaging Article being published Mark reported that the faculty has authored an article to appear in the May/June 2013 ASRT Rad Tech Journal. The focus of the article is image quality in a changing digital culture. If anyone wants to share this article with his or her staff, please contact Mark for a pdf file. Any feedback will be welcome
Admission Update Kristen reported the program received 65 applications this year, which is down from 84 last year. This decline is most likely due to the changed admission requirements resulting from the ARRT degree requirement. Of the 65, 26 already had academic degrees, of which 8 were accepted. The 8 other accepted candidates will have to take and pass an online review test to receive an A.S. degree from Ivy Tech. Mark said that the program is grateful for 65 applications since apps were significantly down at other hospital-based programs in Indiana. It is unclear at this time if admission requirements will change next year. This will depend on progress toward ABHES accreditation. Matt complimented the program on its interview process. The accepted students have been invited to attend a Critical Thinking workshop in July. Classes will start the first Monday in August. Student Reports L. Bauer, St. Vincent Indy Lisa reported being excited about graduating but is concerned about the job market. Mark has been talking with Julie Moon regarding PRN Pool positions and will communicate to students as more information becomes available. Zack Atkinson, St. Vincent Anderson Regional Zach had no complaints but expressed concern about going to the critical access hospitals because at times the procedure volumes are low. He questioned the value of the critical access experience and wondered if there were any other places they could go. Mark cautioned that clinical rotations outside of St. Vincent Health will require a written contract. That said, all clinical site possibilities are open for discussion. Much Explore how critical access rotations can be enhanced to promote a global understanding of medical imaging and healthcare December 2013
of the ensuing discussion focused on the value of critical access rotations. Mark explained these rotations are valuable in helping students adapt to a unique work culture and promote a global understanding of healthcare in unique settings. He added students make only 6 trips to critical access hospitals in their senior year. Kathy Holton advised the program to consider expanding student s experiences at critical access hospitals. She gave the example of Marion University nursing students being assigned to shadow one or more members of management. Perhaps students could shadow managers or administrators to better understand healthcare in these unique settings. The faculty will explore this suggestion and report back in December. Carly Linn, St. Joseph Carly shared no significant concerns but shares the same concern about procedure volumes at the critical access hospitals. All students attested they are satisfied with the quality of education received in the program. Coordinators Report (safety/compliance, offsites, attrition) D. Sidor, St. Vincent Dave reported that 6 students remain in the junior class and 5 seniors will graduate. There are no significant student concerns but some challenges occur with the junior class. He mentioned surgery techs have praised Anderson senior students he often uses them as motivation for his students. K. Godshall, St. Joseph Kevin reported the 2 remaining seniors excellent. Four juniors remain and are doing well. Overall he has no real concerns
K. Aaron, St. Vincent Anderson Kristen reported the 4 graduating seniors is an amazing group. She has received many compliments from many areas regarding these students. Four junior students remain but 1 junior student on currently on an improvement program. Manager Reports K. Holton, St. Vincent Kathy did 3 mock interviews yesterday with senior students and they went very well. Hopefully the mock interviews will help the students when they interview for the PRN Pool as well as with other health care facilities. Hopefully positions will be approved for the Pool (Julie Moon is requesting to hire for 5 PRN openings). Kathy reported Dawn is sad to see this class moving on and has no concerns. She stressed the importance of CT and MRI training in the coming years, to which Mark reported 4 techs have been accepted into the MRI program. Mark said how much the program appreciates the directors doing the mock interviews with the students. C. Mitchell, St. Vincent Anderson Regional Craig was not present and did not issue a report. M. Eastburn, St. Joseph Matt praised the mock interview process and the work the program has been doing in mentoring students on resume writing. He anticipates a PRN position and a 0.3 position to be available and will be difficult to choose between the two students
Technologist Reports A. Chaplin Allison is thrilled with the senior students they have been exceptional throughout the program. Juniors are moving along well. Overall she has no concerns. L. Normandie Lee was not present and did not issue a report. J. Ash - Jeff was not present and did not issue a report. Radiologist Report Dr. Davis Dr. Davis was not present but Kevin gave the following report from Dr. Davis. Dr. Davis has no suggestions for the program but still would like mamography to be part of the program. Mark says that the students are advised to observe and explore mammo on their own time but mammo will not be included in the program as a clinical rotation. Dr. Davis feels the quality of students is good and pleased about going forward with the Associate Degree. Regarding the article, he congratulated the faculty on their achievement. He has no real concerns at this time. Reminders / Dates Juniors off: May 27 June 7 Graduation: June 7 pm Marten House Next Meeting: December 4, 2013 Additions There were no additions
