1 Program: School of Nursing and Health Sciences RN to BSN Program Assessed by: Stephanie Reagan Date: Mission Statement: The purpose of the RN-BSN Nursing program at Malone University is to provide registered nurses (RNs) who have completed either an associate degree program or a diploma program for their basic nursing education a completion of their Bachelor in Science Nursing degree. Program Goals: 1. Understand and critically engage those bodies of knowledge and cultural influences that have shaped the world. 2. Understand the biblical, historical, and theological foundation of the Christian faith. 3. Think critically and communicate effectively in multiple contexts. 4. Attain expertise in at least one profession or academic discipline and lay the foundation for meaningful work or further studies at the graduate level. 5. Explore the implications of the Christian faith for all areas of living, including intellectual, spiritual, and community pursuits. 1 P a g e

Synthesize theoretical and empirical knowledge from the liberal arts, sciences, humanities, Christian faith, and nursing as a source for making nursing practice decisions in a variety of nursing contexts and settings. (Meets Goal #1 and #4) 1. CAAP Critical thinking Test A. This test is a 32 item, 40 minute test that measures students skills in clarifying, analyzing, evaluating and extending arguments. The critical thinking test consists of four passages that are representative of the kinds of issues commonly encountered in a post secondary curriculum. B. Benchmark is for the post test score to be at or above the pre test mean score. Cohort # 35 CAAP no longer in use Cohort # 36 CAAP no longer in use Results not capturing the critical thinking component for nursing. Last class to take CAAP was Class #34. Replaced with subscale from Hesi RN/BSN Faculty reviewing other critical thinking tools to replace the CAAP test 2. RN/BSN Exam Critical thinking A. Online 50 question exam designed to measure student s ability to apply concepts related to a specific nursing content area. Given a percentile ranking comparison with BSN and AD programs and overall ranking. with 9 students completing the HESI, the class scored a mean of 769 with a range of and a percentile ranking of 54.4% The students met the percentile ranking for critical thinking. Faculty reviewing critical thinking tools. B. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI Composite score. Given a percentile ranking comparison with BSN and Associate Degree programs and overall ranking. B. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI Composite score. In addition will be evaluated by the stated acceptable HESI score of 850 and/or percentile ranking of 50%. Global Health Care Systems HESI, scored a mean of 690 and a percentile ranking of 54%. scored a mean of 847 and a Ethics HESI, Scored a mean of 743 and a percentile ranking of 54%. With the addition of assignments such as case studies, use of vital sims, class presentations on health care topics/ethical problems, use of internet in classroom discussions, and looking at self assessment questions on take home exams; the national mean has improved from last cohort. RN/BSN Exam A. Online 50 question exam designed to measure student s ability to apply concepts related to a specific nursing content area. Given a percentile ranking comparison with BSN and Associate Degree programs and overall ranking. B. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI Composite score. In addition will be evaluated by the stated acceptable HESI score of 850 and/or a percentile ranking of 50%. Technical skills: HESI, Scored a mean of 774 and a percentile ranking of 54%. Cohort # 36 - Class size of 14, scored a mean of 787 and percentile ranking of 69.5 Illness & Disease Management: HESI, Scored a mean of 777 and a percentile ranking of 54% Faculty will continue the use of simulation and active learning exercises with the addition of case studies and role playing. Continue to monitor. 5 Communication: Cohort # 35- Class size of 10, With 9 students taking the HESI, Scored a mean of 774 and a percentile ranking of 54%. Cohort # 36 - Class size of 14, scored a mean of 820 and Provider of Care: With 9 students taking the HESI, Scored a mean of 764 and a percentile ranking of 54%. Faculty reviewed the results for Cohort 35 and it was noted that the benchmark mean and the percentile ranking were both met. Faculty will continue to strengthen their content on communication and provider of care through the introduction of the QSEN competencies and using various communication exercises. scored a mean of 767 and 5 P a g e
6 2. Evolve Reach Community Health Exam A. Specialty exam designed to measure the student s ability to apply concepts related to specific clinical nursing content areas. Specialty exams consist of 50 test items. Test items that best measure nursing knowledge and competencies within the designated content area are selected from HESI database. B. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI composite score. In addition scores will be evaluated by the stated acceptable HESI score of 850 and or a percentile ranking of 50%. Cohort # 35 Exam was not given. Computer server problems. with a mean score of 771 and a percentile ranking of 25.6% Faculty reviewed the results for Cohort 35 and noted that the national mean and percentile ranking were met. Faculty reviewed the results for Cohort 36 and noted the low percentile ranking of 25.6%. Faculty discussed in curriculum the premature administration of the test to this Cohort. The lead faculty in the Cohort suggests administrating the test the first hour of THEO 407 when all content has been introduced. Assignments for the course were also reviewed and found to be beneficial, with a enough time to complete in the Cohort. 6 P a g e

Specialty exam designed to measure the student s ability to apply concepts related to specific clinical nursing content areas. Specialty exams consist of 50 test items. Test items that best measure nursing knowledge and competencies within the designated content area are selected from HESI database. B. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI Composite score. In addition will be evaluated by the stated acceptable HESI score of 850 and/or a percentile ranking of 50%. Information & Health Care Technology: With 9 students taking the HESI, scored a mean of 730 and percentile ranking of 54.7%. Cohort # 36 Class size of 14, scored a mean of 877 and percentile rank of 69.5 Member of Profession: With 9 students taking the HESI, scored a mean of 733 and a percentile ranking of 54%. scored a mean of 862 and Faculty reviewed scores and discussed the assignments connected with Health & Information Technology and Evidence Based Practice and agreed that with the addition of the QSEN competencies/activities throughout the curriculum and the student presentation that these scores will improve. The faculty will continue to evaluate the assignments. Scholarship for Evidence Based Practice: With 9 students taking the HESI, scored a mean of 814 and percentile ranking of 54%. scored a mean of 810 and No adjustments at this time. Benchmark is at or above the National Mean HESI Composite score. In addition will be evaluated by the stated acceptable HESI score of 850/and or percentile ranking of 50%. Designer/Manager/ Coordinator of Care: With 9 students taking the HESI, Scored a mean of 771 and a percentile ranking of 54%. Cohort # 36 - Class size of 14, scored a mean of 843 and a Percentile ranking was met. With the addition of QSEN(Quality Safety Education in Nursing) competencies threaded throughout the curriculum and a presentation on QSEN, the scores have strengthened. Clinical hours and NRN431 focus was changed to Leadership, Quality and Safety. Faculty will continue to evaluate assignments. 8 P a g e
