10 Market Overview Definitions (continued) Colocation Service Colocation refers to the provision of data centre space, racks, power, and network resources for use by the customer. Colocation is commonly understood to have 2 main types. One refers to wholesale colocation service, which includes the provision of large data centre spaces for customers with high power requirements. Typically, this would involve the provision of an entire data centre to a customer who can choose to design and customise the space as required. Some of the major providers of wholesale colocation are Global Switch Ltd, Digital Realty Trust, and DuPont Fabros Technology Inc. The other is the provision of retail colocation, which includes offering smaller spaces fitted with cages or racks with lower power resources per customer, so that multiple customers can host their IT infrastructure within a data centre. Customers generally reserve racks, power, and network resources but bring their own servers to the data centre. Retail colocation is also accompanied by the provision of value-added services such as security services and 24/7 IT support services. This report excludes wholesale colocation services and includes only the retail colocation portions of the market. Managed Hosting Service Managed hosting refers to the management of servers, operating systems, and network resources for customers.
