Letters of Recognition Credit letters of recognition are awarded to students who complete fewer than 12 credits in a prescribed sequence of courses focused on acquisition of specific skill sets of concepts within a specified context. Letters of recognition often are part of certificate programs and, in turn, of associate degree programs. See pages f all letters of recognition, including those integrated within a certificate and an associate degree. A number of letters of recognition also are offered through the Continuing Education and Wkfce Development division. These letters of recognition primarily address career and professional development needs. Infmation on noncredit letters of recognition may be found in any current noncredit schedule of classes. See pages f qualifications and certificate requirements. TRANSFER AND CAREER PROGRAMS Transfer programs are designated as associate of arts associate of sciences degrees in the Areas of Study table on pages These two-year programs meet the needs of students who want to earn a bachel s degree from a four-year college university. The courses in these programs follow the patterns required in the lower division of four-year institutions. Upon the completion of a transfer program with a cumulative average of 2.0 better, the student is qualified to receive an associate degree and to be accepted with juni standing at a four-year college. In the Areas of Study table, career programs are designated as associate of applied sciences degree certificate letter of recognition areas of study. Career programs are f students who intend to seek employment upon graduation. Associate of applied sciences degree (A.A.S.) programs include specific career courses leading to employment in a specific occupation, in addition to general education courses that provide the basis f a well-rounded college education. Certificate programs, usually about 30 credits, are designed f those who wish to develop upgrade their job skills. Nearly all courses in the certificate programs relate to the skills required by the career field. Letters of recognition are awarded to students who complete a shter prescribed sequence of courses required f employment enhancement in a specific employment area. While the primary objective of career programs is job entry, a growing number of graduates in career areas of study are transferring courses to specialized bachel degree programs at four-year institutions. SPECIALIZED AREAS College Hons College Hons is ganized f the academically talented and aims to develop the capabilities of these students. Its courses apply as appropriate electives in most of the college's programs, and welcomes application by all qualified students. Hons courses are seminars dealing with topics common to several programs. Students in the hons courses read the wks of imptant writers and thinkers, and are encouraged to develop and express their own views regarding them both in writing and ally in class discussions. College Hons seeks to nurture a sense of community among its participants. Classes are small, no me than 20 39

Once admitted, they are free to take as many as few of its courses as they choose. F infmation, call Cooperative Education/Internships/Practicums Cooperative education and practicums enable students to exple the wld of wk while completing academic programs. In most cases, these are paid wk experiences in a student s field of study. Internships usually are unpaid wk experiences that provide practical experience and involve classroom learning. To be eligible f placement in a cooperative education practicum internship students must have: completed nine credit hours in their maj; a minimum grade point average of 2.0; and the wk experience approved by the cooperative education specialist. F additional infmation, call Service Learning Service learning is an educational strategy through which students can better understand what they are learning in their college courses by providing meaningful volunteer service in the community. Learning through service is a way to meet one of the eight college competencies: degree graduates will gain competence in social and civic responsibility. Service Learning is an option in a number of courses each term. Instructs will infm their classes if they offer this option and will provide specific guidelines and requirements. In general, students who participate in service learning volunteer during the term in a community agency school, complete a reflective journal of their service-learning experiences and complete a written assignment about their service-learning project. AACC has partnerships with a variety of agencies serving the needs of people in all parts of the county. Some examples of service-learning opptunities include tuting children in after-school programs, assisting the developmentally disabled in learning new skills f employment, visiting the elderly in nursing homes and designing Web sites f nonprofit agencies. The time commitment is generally hours per term. Through service learning, students will better understand themselves, their community and their course wk. F infmation, call Women's Studies The Women s Studies option focuses on women and issues of gender. It examines women s experiences, roles and achievements, and the relationship between stereotypes of feminine behavi and the realities of women s lives. The option also exples the differences in female and male roles that occur in all societies and the ways in which gender is culturally and biologically constructed. Women s Studies is an option within the General Studies degree (see page 128) and open to all students. Students take a minimum of 12 credit hours of courses with the WMS designation. Reflecting its multidisciplinary nature, this program treats the study of women from the perspective of such disciplines as histy, literature, art, science, psychology, health, criminal justice and legal studies. Courses transfer directly into the maj and min in Women s Studies at four-year institutions may transfer as electives in other disciplines. F infmation, call English as a Second Language (ESL) This specialized area f non-native speakers of English offers beginning, intermediate and advanced courses in conversation, reading, writing and grammar. New ESL students should take the placement test at the Student Union Room 240 befe attending an ESL ientation. Test schedules are published in the noncredit schedule of classes. ESL courses are listed on pages Those who complete an ESL course with satisfacty attendance will receive a certificate and a grade of Pass Continue. A Pass grade allows the student to take the course s next level. Those eligible to take advanced ESL courses, as determined by placement tests course wk, can enroll at the college with the same restrictions as students in developmental status. Those who pass are exempted through testing from all four advanced ESL courses can enroll as regular status students. See pages f student status definitions. F infmation, call International Education Opptunities The college offers several specialized areas which suppt the international education mission of the college (see page 8). Travel-study courses provide direct experience with other cultures. This option offers instruction abroad, led taught by college faculty, and helps students arrange their own international study as part of the college curriculum. An exchange program allows students, faculty and staff the opptunity to wk study abroad while their counterparts study wk here. On-campus initiatives include internationalizing the curriculum, admitting students from abroad and planning cultural events with the International Student Association. F infmation call Servicemembers Opptunity Colleges (SOC) The college was designated a Servicemembers Opptunity Colleges (SOC) by the Department of Defense and the American Association of Community Colleges in April 1973, and became a member of the SOC associate degree netwk of colleges and universities in August The college also is a member of SOCNAV (Navy) f qualifying Sails, Marines and their dependents to contract f a degree under the SOC. An off-campus SOC center was established in August 1973 at Ft Meade. College-Level Examination Program tests, U.S. Armed Fces Institute courses and tests and service experience, as evaluated by the American Council on Education, may be applied by members of the services toward the fulfillment of their degree requirements. Students enrolled at Anne Arundel Community College as Servicemembers Opptunity Colleges Associates Degree (SOCAD) netwk candidates may satisfy the academic residence requirement by completing a minimum of 25 percent of their program in residence at the college. 15 AREAS OF STUDY 53 ARCHITECTURAL AND INTERIOR DESIGN OVERVIEW The Architecture and Interi Design programs serve two basic groups: those who plan to transfer and those who seek immediate employment. The emphasis on design, technology and computer-aided drafting and design (CAD) applications prepares students f transfer to a university placement in the wk fce. Transfer students should consult with the department chair to keep abreast of articulation agreements. Program graduates also qualify f entry-level positions. The department offers three primary disciplines: architecture, interi design and construction management. Each offers an option f obtaining a two-year associate of applied sciences degree, as well as certificates which target specific skills f immediate employment professional development. Courses in certificate programs may apply toward the applied sciences degree options. Students may obtain me than one of the department s degree options certificates. Award-winning full- and part-time faculty members are locally and nationally certified as licensed, practicing professionals. Many student projects, based on actual situations, are sometimes implemented. One example is the college entrance sign on Ritchie Highway, designed by an architectural design student. Active architecture and interi design clubs provide opptunities to meet socially and netwk with outside ganizations. The programs and their students continue to receive awards from government, community groups and national ganizations.
