Amended or additional parts of revised pages will be marked by a vertical black line in the adjacent margin. Issue Date Comments One March 1996 Original Document Two October 1999 Supersedes Issue 1 Responsibilities Railway Group Standards are mandatory on all members of the Railway Group * and apply to all relevant activities that fall into the scope of each individual s Railway Safety Case. If any of those activities are performed by a contractor, the contractor s obligation in respect of Railway Group Standards is determined by the terms of the contract between the respective parties. Where a contractor is a duty holder of a Railway Safety Case then Railway Group Standards apply directly to the activities described in the Safety Case. * The Railway Group comprises Railtrack and the duty holders of the Railway Safety Cases accepted by Railtrack Compliance The provisions of this document are to be complied with for schemes for which the Signalling Scheme Plan is first approved on or after 4 December Retrospective action is not required in respect of existing schemes for which the Signalling Scheme Plan was approved prior to 4 December Railtrack shall consider the need to comply with this issue of the Standard when any alterations are made to a Signalling Scheme Plan which had first been approved prior to 4 December Where any alteration is made to an existing installation, including routine maintenance repainting, the entire installation shall be brought into conformance with these requirements unless a cost benefit analysis shows that the cost is grossly disproportionate to the benefit. No other retrospective action is required. Health and Safety Responsibilities In issuing this document, Railtrack PLC makes no warranties, express or implied, that compliance with all or any documents published by the Safety & Standards Directorate is sufficient on its own to ensure safe systems of work or operation. Each user is reminded of its own responsibilities to ensure health and safety at work and its individual duties under health and safety legislation. Supply Controlled and uncontrolled copies of this document may be obtained from the Industry Safety Liaison Dept, Safety and Standards Directorate, Railtrack PLC, Railtrack House, DP01, Euston Square, London, NW1 2EE. 2 RAILTRACK
5 Railway Group Standard Page 3 of 10 1 Purpose 2 Scope Part B The purpose of this document is to define the colours to be used in those parts of the signalling system where colour has safety implications, but the colour to be used is not defined in any other Standard. The overall scope of Railway Group Standards is as specified in Appendix A of GA/RT6001. The contents of this document applies to specific signalling applications where colour is used to convey safety related signalling information, in particular: Visual Display Units Control Panels Lever Frames Printed Colours Signs The requirements for signals and for signs used as signals are incorporated in Railway Group Standard GK/RT0031, Lineside Signals and Indicators. 3 General Requirements Wherever a colour is used in a particular installation, that colour shall be used consistently throughout that installation. Where no colour is defined for a particular function, any appropriate colour may be used, provided that the colour is used consistently throughout that installation. Any colour identified in this standard shall generally be confined to the designated safety related purpose and shall only be used for other purposes where no confusion would arise. Where printed or painted colours are used, those colours should have minimal susceptibility to, and should be maintained to prevent, fading. RAILTRACK 3

Colour White Red Yellow Green Grey Pink Cyan Blue/Red Blue Black Table 1 Use Route set Ground frame indications Position light signal Off Block control Normal Slot On and Off Other miscellaneous indications Track occupation Signal red aspect Limit of shunt lit Signal replacement facility Block control Train on Line One Train Working without train staff Line Occupied Level crossing: Road signal light indications Mains power supply failure Level crossing failed Patrolman s Lockout System in Use Warnings requiring attention / Emergency alarm Signal yellow aspect Warning class exit Point, ground frame and ARS sub area reminders Signal green aspect Block control Line Clear One Train Working without train staff Line Clear Slot controls Track (not occupied and route not set) Reminder: Line blocked to electric trains Reminder: Engineering Protection or Possession SPAD Indicator Automatic working facility for Controlled Signal Background colour Note that isolated text may appear in any appropriate colour that is legible against the background colour. Where a VDU is used to control a relay based interlocking which is incapable of providing the indications shown in this table, the colours used for the available indications shall match those listed in Table 2. Colours to be used on VDUs shall be such that a different valid colour is not displayed upon failure of any component part of the display system (eg. electron gun), or the design must ensure that any credible failure is apparent to the signalman. Procedures shall be in place to prevent adjustment of colours on VDU screens except by trained personnel following a laid down procedure which ensures consistency of colour reproduction across all VDUs. The above listed colours may be used for other purposes only where there is no possibility of confusion. 4 RAILTRACK

Where this is the case, green and brown (or orange) shall be used for one line (usually down direction) and blue and yellow shall be used for the adjacent line (usually up line), repeating as necessary for additional lines. One additional non conflicting colour (Light Violet, BS 381C shade 797 is recommended) may be used only in exceptional circumstances during alterations where the use of an additional colour would reduce the number of required consequential alterations. The background colour of a control panel or indication diagram shall be a neutral colour such that the prescribed colours shall be clearly contrasting with the background. Barrier level crossing pedestals (or equivalent) shall have black controls, except for those controls providing a stop function which shall be coloured red. 6 RAILTRACK
