5 II. About The Championship of Poland HISTORY: Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII is Poland s eighth national championship of American football. Known in the past as the Polish Bowl, the championship has been won by five different teams in its first seven years. Note 2: The Warsaw Eagles and the Wrocław Crew are two-time winners of the national title, meaning that if the Eagles win this year they will be the first three-time winner, and if the Giants win this year the same could also be said (although technically the Giants and the Crew are not the same team, a large number of the Giants players were members of the Crew, and the Giants are generally considered as the successors to the Crew). LOCATION: The site for the game is determined in advance each season, with the home team determined by regular season position. That means that the Wrocław Giants will actually be the home team for SuperFinal VIII, despite it being played in the Eagles home city. RULES: The SuperFinal is played using the same rules and procedures as regular games in Poland. The Polish League of American Football uses the NCAA rulebook with some very slight variations and with a one-year delay in implementing rule changes from the book. The biggest difference is that the PLFA uses 12-minute quarters rather than 15-minute ones, a practice which is followed in most European countries. Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII MATCHUP: The game will be a matchup of the regular-season runners-up in the two Topliga divisions. The Giants were the South Division s second-best team during the regular season, compiling a record of 8-2, while the Eagles finished second in the North at 7-3. The Giants were also the only team to defeat the South champion Wrocław Devils during the regular season (the Devils finished 9-1 before losing to the Eagles in the semifinals). Wrocław won the only regularseason game between the clubs, played in Wrocław on May 11. The final score was 9-7, making it the lowest-scoring game of the year in the Topliga. For more information, please visit: www. trawnikproducent.pl GAME RULES: The game will be played using the NCAA rulebook, with slight modifications for the Polish League of American football and with a one-year delay in implementing the most recent rule changes. The game will be played in four 12-minute periods, with NCAA overtime rules deciding the winner in the case of a tie at the end of regulation play. NCAA overtime rules include an unlimited number of untimed periods, in which each team takes a turn on offense from the opponent s 25-yard line. If the score is still tied at the end of the first overtime, a second overtime is played, and so on. Beginning with the third overtime, a team scoring a touchdown must attempt a two-point conversion rather than a one-point kicking PAT. IV. Gameday Attractions (including coin toss) PRE-GAME: Picnic: Fans lined up for four hours before the game for a giant picnic on the stadium concourse. The picnic was hosted by players from other PLFA teams, and included contests, food, prizes and special guests such as Olympic medalist Krzysztof Jankowski. The Venue The centerpiece of Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII is the venue, the National Stadium in Warsaw. The 58,500-capacity stadium is the largest in Poland, and it was built as part of the nationwide stadium-building project for the Euro 2012 soccer tournament. The stadium, which was completed in November 2011, cost approximately $600 million dollars to build, and it features a retractable roof (which will likely be closed on gameday). 7 Italy (won 2-1 by Italy). PLFA NAC SuperFinal VII (won by the Gdynia Seahawks over the Warsaw Eagles) was the first non-soccer sporting event to be held in the stadium. The roof is made of fiberglass covered with teflon, and it takes 20 minutes to open or close. For that reason, the decision to play a game with the roof open or closed is usually made far in advance of the event. This summer, the stadium has played host to a number of concerts, including one by Paul McCartney in June. VI. Road to SuperFinal VIII WROCŁAW GIANTS: The Giants were the second seed in the South Division at the end of the regular season, finishing with a record of 8-2. They finished the season with five shutouts in ten games, and they were the Topliga s top scoring team on offense, as well as the top team in the league in terms of points against. They finished the season strongly, winning four out of their last five games. That quintet included a victory over the Seahawks on the last play of the game and a two-point loss to the Devils in the final regular-season matchup. 8 Quick recap: A significant downpour the evening before the game left the Olympic Stadium field a gooey mess, and the rain continued throughout the day on game day, producing a game whose course was dictated more by the wet and muddy conditions than by the actions of either of the two teams. The Giants got the first points of the game on a 36-yard field goal by Dawid Pańczyszyn with less than four minutes left in the first half, before going up 9-0 at halftime on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Bartosz Dziedzic. The Eagles got on the board on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Shane Gimzo to Filip Mościcki with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter. Eagles kicked Marcin Łojewski missed three field goals during the game, including one in the fourth quarter after the Eagles had drawn to within two points. Notes: The defensive struggle was the lowest scoring game of the season in the Topliga. The referee for that game, Wojciech Ratajczak, was the same referee as for Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII. The Giants won the game despite gaining only 98 yards on offense, taking 9 penalties for 70 yards and allowing the Eagles to convert 3 of 4 fourth-down attempts. VIII. Giants vs. Eagles: Series History NOTE: Between , there was a franchise in Wrocław named the Crew. That team then morphed into a new team, the Wrocław Giants, which played in the Czech league in 2012 before returning to the PLFA for its debut season in After losing to Warsaw in 2006 and 2007, Wrocław has won 5 of the last 6 games in the series. Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII will be the 9th meeting all-time between the two clubs, with Wrocław holding a 5-3 edge in the series. The Eagles won the only postseason game played in the series, defeating the Crew 8-7 in the 2008 semifinal (Warsaw went on to win PLFA SuperFinal III, then called Polish Bowl III, that season), a game that looked a lot like the only game played this season between the two teams (a 9-7 win for Wrocław). Topliga Season Recap Eight teams competed in the 2013 Topliga season for the rights to play in the four-team playoff tournament that culminates with Trawnik Producent PLFA SuperFinal VIII. The league was split into two divisions (North and South), and each team played a 10-game schedule that included a home-and-away series against each of the other three teams in its division as well as a single matchup against each of the teams from the other division. As the season progressed, it became quickly apparent that there was a clear divide between the top half of the league and the bottom half of the league. As such, the regular season evolved into a race to see who would gain home-field advantage and the top seeds for the semifinals, although one of bottom teams, Kozły Poznań, had some key signings midseason and nearly upset some of the Big Four teams, notably the Gdynia Seahawks. In the North Division, the defending champion Seahawks won the division outright with an 8-2 record, finishing a game ahead of the Warsaw Eagles (7-3), with whom they split the season series. Gdynia wrapped up the top seed with a narrow victory over Kozły in their last regular-season game. Kozły finished 4-6, good enough for third place, while the Warsaw Spartans were outscored by 513 in ten games, all losses. In the South Division, the two Wrocław teams were clearly dominant. The Devils and the Giants split their season series as well; however, despite the Giants holding the tiebreaker advantage thanks to a better point differential in head-tohead matchups, the Devils won the division with a victory over the Warsaw Eagles in their final regular season game. The Devils finished 9-1, with the best record in the Topliga. The Giants finished 8-2, with the difference between them and the Devils a loss to the Gdynia Seahawks early in the season. The AZS Silesia Rebels and the Zagłębie Steelers Interpromex rounded out the standings, both finishing well out of contention at 2-8. The semifinals therefore pitted the Devils against the Eagles (for the fourth consecutive year) and the Giants against the Seahawks. The Polish League of American Football (PLFA) American football took its first steps in Poland in 1999, when a small group of enthusiasts met in a park to practice and discuss what they had seen at the time only on television. This group eventually formed Poland s first team, although they did not have a domestic opponent until five years later. By 2006, the number of teams in Poland had grown to four, and the Polish League of American Football (PLFA) was born. The prolate spheroid with eight stitches was quickly passed around to other Polish cities. At the start of the 2013 season, more than 3100 athletes were playing for the 74 teams that comprise the 5 divisions of football in the country, including a junior league that was introduced this year. Accordingly, American football is now considering the fastest growing sport in Poland. In the highest division of play in the PLFA, the Topliga, most teams have Americans playing under contract. Most of these players have experience playing in America s top professional league (the NFL) or its high-level interscholastic league (the NCAA). Football is currently entering the hearts of Polish fans and taking its television and top stadiums by storm. Games are characterized by a picnic atmosphere, with attractions and surprises in store for the whole family. In short, football is becoming fashionable on the banks of the Vistula. XIII. 13 XV. The Wrocław Giants The Wrocław Giants are the successors to the Wrocław Crew, one of the four original members of the Polish League of American Football. The team was founded in 2006, and they have participated in play in the top division of Polish football in every season but 2012, when they participated in the Czech league. The Giants/Crew have reached the championship game five times (including this season), more than any other team. Wrocław Giants Head Coach and Key Player Profiles HEAD COACH: MOTT GAYMON At only 29 years old, Mott Gaymon is one of the youngest coaches in the Topliga. Mott was a player for the Wrocław Crew beginning in 2011, bringing unparalleled energy to a defense that has always been one of the best in the league. Gaymon got into coaching the team after a knee injury put an end to his playing days. He puts the same intensity into his coaching job as he did as a player, and his success in the role of motivator may be unmatched in Poland. KEY PLAYERS, OFFENSE: #15 BARTOSZ DZIEDZIC (BAR-toesh JAY-jeech), QUARTERBACK #25 TOMASZ DZIEDZIC (TOE-mahsh JAY-jeech), WIDE RECEIVER >>> The Dziedzic brothers are one of the most dangerous offensive duos in Poland. Bartek has been a model of consistency all season, while Tomek (500+ yards receiving) has proven to be a tremendous deep threat. The pair hooked up for 11 touchdowns this season, making Tomasz the second-leading scorer among wide receivers in the Topliga. #3 MARK PHILMORE, WIDE RECEIVER >>> Philmore is the only player in the game with NFL experience, having played briefly with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern. He is playing his fourth season in the PLFA, making him one of the most experienced import players in the country. He is the most versatile weapon the Giants have, moving all over the field to create mismatch problems. His stats are not the most impressive in the league because other teams defenses concentrate on him so much, meaning that the rest of the field is opened up for players like T. Dziedzic. Mark is also the architect of the offensive system. #5 JAMAL SCHULTERS, RUNNING BACK >>> Schulters is a big play threat on every carry, reading the defense well and finishing all of his runs with a deliver-the-blow mentality. The Warsaw Eagles The Warsaw Eagles are Poland s oldest American football team, coming into existence way back in They were also Poland s first champions, taking SuperFinal I (against the Pomorze Seahawks) in 2006, as well as Poland s first two-time champions, also winning SuperFinal III over the Seahawks. The Eagles finished both of their first two regular seasons undefeated, and have compiled an all-time record of in eight seasons of PLFA play. Warsaw Eagles Head Coach and Key Player Profiles HEAD COACH: PHILLIP DILLON >>> Coach Dillon came to Poland with more than 20 years of experience in the German Football League. He joined the Eagles as a Defensive Coordinator in 2010, and became Head Coach in 2011 (replacing Briton Ian Wilcock). Coach Dillon celebrated his 200th career victory with a win over the AZS Silesia Miners in the 2011 season. Although the 47-year-old Dillon originally hails from North Carolina, he has spent most of his adult life in Europe. He began coaching in Germany in 1989, leading teams in baseball and track in addition to football. Coach Dillon s players frequently cite his objectivity and sense of humor as his two defining traits. Coach Dillon plays a big role in the improvement of the PLFA overall, helping to train other coachers at offseason clinics. KEY PLAYERS, OFFENSE: #3 SHANE GIMZO, QUARTERBACK >>> Gimzo shone in a late-season game against Warsaw s arch-nemesis, the Gdynia Seahawks, scoring a last second touchdown after leading the team downfield on a dramatic final drive. The Ottawa University graduate was announced at the beginning of the year as the teams response to last year s MVP - Kyle McMahon of the Seahawks. He was supposed to be a typical running QB but he is actually far from it. He passed for 14 TDs in the regular season and two more in the semifinal against the Devils. #23 PIOTR OSUCHOWSKI (pee-o-truh O-soo-HOVE-ski), RUNNING BACK >>> On a team that is deep at the running back position, Osu has been one of the most consistent contributors to the offense. He has provided a good balance to the passing game of Gimzo. His good hands give Gimzo a solid option out of the backfield, and he also contributes on the kickoff team. #7 CLARENCE ANDERSON, WIDE RECEIVER >>> (See profile below under Key Players, Special Teams) #25 JAKUB JUSZCAK (YAH-koob YOOSH-chack), RUNNING BACK >>> The former 8-a-side league finals MVP couldn t really decide if he wanted to play fullback or tailback, but with only one classic blocking fullback in the roster Juszczak has been forced to play both positions this season and he has delivered. He has a unique ability to deceive opponents with his fakes, opening up option and play-action opportunities for the offense. Although he doesn t score very often, his average of 5.8 yards a carry makes him a reliable option for his QB. His only weakness is that he is not much of a threat to catch the football. #89 KRZYSZTOF STOJAK (kershish-tof STOY-ack), WIDE RECEIVER >>> Stojak just recently moved to Warsaw from his native Lublin, where he played for Tytani for a couple of seasons and helped the team with moving from Poland s third division to its second division. 24 moved up the depth chart and won the starting spot after a great game against the Silesia Rebels. This Randy Moss look-a-like has proven to be Warsaw s best internal pre-season transfer, outperforming running back Witold Szpotański (WEE-told shpo-tine-ski) and the recently injured WR/QB Filip Mościcki (FEE-leep moesh-cheet-ski). KEY PLAYERS, DEFENSE #24 CALEB SINGLETON, LINEBACKER/DEFENSIVE BACK >>> This versatile Western Oregon graduate is a very gifted athlete, and the defensive backs coach for the Eagles. He is the team s top tackler, with an average of 7 tackles per game. Singleton usually lines up across from the opposition s strongest player, and he also contributes on special teams by playing and coaching. Singleton also plays an influential role in the development of young Eagles, giving 100% on the sideline for the BEagles and the Eagles junior team. #57 TOMASZ SZCZESZEK (TOE-mahsh SHCHAY-shek), DEFENSIVE TACKLE >>> A linebacker until 2011, Tomasz moved up to the line last season. He began at defensive end before finally settling in at tackle. An avid weightlifter, Szczeszek is the team s strength coach, preparing the team s off-season, pre-season and in-season workouts. Weighing in at 250 pounds of pure muscle, Szczeszek earned the nickname Spartacus from his teammates. The statuesque Szczeszek is a lawyer in real life, and he plays both DT in the 4-3 defense and DE in the 3-4. #72 KRZYSZTOF DREGER (ker-zhist-off DRAY-gare), DEFENSIVE LINE >>> Dreger is a rock in the Eagles defense, forming the nucleus of the d-line with Szczeszek. Dreger is one of the most experienced players on the team, and he has been a member of the Eagles since their beginning. He is a relentless pursuer and a team player that is frequently double-teamed by opposing defenses. #43 MARC-AVERY AIRHART, LINEBACKER >>> Airhart, who played college football at Eastern Oregon University, is the second half of the dynamic defensive duo of the Eagles. Strong as an ox and fast as a rabbit, he is very patient in the defensive backfield and he has a good sense of rhythm. Airhart is a strong tackler, and is said to have introduced himself to the team with the loudest tackle the Eagles had ever heard. Airhart averages 6 tackles per game, with more than a third of them coming for a loss. He also plays long snapper. Anderson possesses explosive speed, and he led the Eagles with 10 touchdown receptions as a wide receiver. #8 MARCIN ŁOJEWSKI (MAR-cheen woy-ev-ski), KICKER >>> A longtime backup player, Łojewski was finally given a shot to start at kicker in He is the punter as well as the placekicker, and he has performed these duties well since missing three field goals in the game played earlier in the season between the Giants and the Eagles (a 9-7 loss for the Eagles). Since that time, he has become much more consistent, missing only once in the last six games.
