If you need any assistance with this process, call (858) Course Credit OSHA Training Institute courses typically offer both UCSD Extension Academic Credit and Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Most courses include a final exam. ABIH Credit: The American Board of Industrial Hygiene offers Certification Maintenance (CM) points for specific courses which have been registered. BCSP Credit: The Board of Certified Safety Professionals offers Continuance of Certification (COC) points. BRN Credit: The Bureau of Registered Nurses offers BRN credit. Reference UCSD Provider Number All of the Occupational Health and Safety Department courses at UC San Diego Extension, including the OSHA Training Institute Education Center courses, offer several types of academic and industry credits. On-site Training All courses in this catalog, and many others, can be customized and taught at your work place. Please call (800) to schedule training at your location. For groups of 10 or more, this can often be a more cost effective manner to deliver needed training. Refund Policy Cancellations must be made at least two weeks prior to the course start date to be eligible for a refund. Transfer requests prior to two weeks will be honored. Transfers within the two weeks prior to the course start date will be allowable one time only. Students who do not show up for class and do not call will not be refunded or transferred to another section. Travel Disclaimer All travel plans must accommodate the published course end time. 5 UC San Diego OTIEC s Outreach Trainers Outreach Reporting Tool The UCSD OTIEC introduced its online Trainer Tool for Outreach Trainers. The web-based site includes the ability to enter all course information directly on predetermined screens, including student names. The system also includes features not currently available to trainers such as access to a personal database of their students which includes the card numbers attached to each student. This database is an excellent tool for those with a small business and need to communicate with their students. Additionally, the system allows for the department to print student cards in a timely and efficient manner. This will eliminate errors and delays in receiving cards. 7 Certificate Programs UC San Diego Extension, Occupational Health and Safety Department, offers three Certificate Programs: Professional Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (UCSD Extension) Specializations available for Construction and/or General Industry The program requires a minimum of 8 courses to complete Department of Labor Public Sector Safety and Health Fundamentals Certificate Program This program supports OSHA s mission by training public sector employees in occupational safety and health to reduce incident rates for workers in state and local governments The program is additionally highly applicable to private industry workers as well Certificates are available for Construction and General Industry Safety Specialist Certificate (UCSD Extension) This is a daytime intensive 13 week program that offers classroom training combined with a hands-on learning environment Curriculum consists of occupational health and safety coursework, a three week internship, and a Leadership Workshop Additional Certificate Program information can be found at osha.ucsd.edu UC San Diego Extension Occupational Safety and Health Certificate Department of Labor Public Sector Safety and Health Fundamentals Certificate Program UC San Diego Extension Safety Specialist Certificate This UC San Diego Extension Professional Certificate provides both experienced and newer safety professionals important workplace knowledge and practical experience regarding safety and safety standards. The Professional Certificate offers concentrated study in areas directly applicable to many jobs and can add breadth and depth to existing knowledge and skills. You can elect a single certificate in Construction (24 total units, 4 of which are electives) or General Industry (24 total units, 3 of which are electives), or a dual certificate in both areas (35 total units). Certificate courses include OSHA Standards, Outreach Trainer, Industrial Hygiene and other industry classes. This certificate program supports OSHA s mission by training public sector employees in occupational safety and health to reduce incident rates for workers in state and local governments (the certificate program is additionally highly applicable to private industry workers as well). Participants have the opportunity to earn certificates for Construction and General Industry training. Participants can choose from a variety of topics such as occupational safety and health standards for the construction or general industry, safety and health management, accident investigation, fall hazard awareness, and recordkeeping. This certificate was designed in partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) San Diego Chapter and is an intensive, cohort-based program that combines in-class education with associated skills practice. Included in the certificate program topics are all items necessary for individuals to prepare for entrylevel safety jobs in the construction industry, including an on-thejob paid internship. In addition to this industry-specific expertise, communication with upper management, communication with workers/training, and leadership are all crucial topics studied. 8 Cal/OSHA Safety Courses Cal/OSHA Courses TRAINING INSTITUTE EDUCATION CENTER OSHA Cal/OSHA Update for Construction Industry Outreach Trainers This one day course updates the OSHA 5109 with new and current Cal/OSHA standards and continues the student s authorization to teach both 10 and 30 hour Cal/OSHA Outreach Program. Note required prerequisite: OSHA 5109 or OSHA 5029 within four years. IMPORTANT - ONLINE ENROLLMENT IS NOT PERMITTED. A Verification of Prerequisite Form must be sent in prior to enrollment, along with proof of your trainer status. Acceptable forms of proof are: a copy of your OSHA 500/OSHA 502 trainer card with Cal/OSHA sticker or Certificates of completion. The Cal/OSHA Partnership authorized Outreach Trainers must bring their Federal Outreach Trainer card in order to obtain a Cal/OSHA Partnership Trainer sticker. Cal/OSHA Sticker Expiration: These stickers expire on the same date as the Outreach Trainer card to which they are affixed. Fee: $250 Apr 2 Claremont May 7 San Diego Aug 27 Sacramento Fee: $250 Feb 12 Claremont Mar 6 San Diego Aug 31 San Diego OSHA Cal/OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry Developed in partnership with Cal/OSHA, this new 4-day course emphasizes Title 8 Construction Industry standards and compliance. Topics include IIPP, Ergo, Electrical and many others.the course also provides existing Fed OSHA trainers an endorsement authorizing them to teach 10 & 30 hr Federal- Cal/OSHA outreach courses. Resources and Cal/OSHA training guidelines will be covered. Note: Important Students taking this course who want to receive the Cal/OSHA Outreach Trainer designation must meet the following required prerequisites: OSHA 500 or 502 (must be a current trainer) One year of Cal/ OSHA general industry safety experience OSHA 500 card must be brought to classthe Cal/ OSHA Partnership authorized Outreach Trainers will have their Federal Outreach Trainer cards affixed with a Cal/OSHA Partnership Trainer sticker. 9 OTIEC Safety Courses OSHA Hazardous Materials Learn how to apply OSHA general industry standards and integrate materials from other safety standards that relate to hazardous materials. Related processes such as spraying and dipping are covered, as well as electrical equipment. Topics include: Flammable Liquids, Hazardous Waste Operations, Confined Space, Compressed Gases, Hazardous Locations. OSHA Respiratory Protection Learn how to establish, maintain, and monitor a respirator program following the requirements in 29 CFR Discuss the technical aspects for the proper selection and use of respiratory protection. Evaluate compliance with OSHA s standard by using the compliance directive and the Small Entity Compliance Guide. Topics include: Respiratory Protection Program, Fit Testing Demonstration, Selection of Respirators, Maintenance and Care. OSHA Permit-Required Confined Space Entry The danger of explosion, poisoning, and asphyxiation exists every time a worker enters a confined space. Learn the OSHA required confined space entry standard, hazards associated with entry procedures, Personal Protective Equipment, ventilation and purging requirements, calculations and techniques, and appropriate atmosphere testing equipment. Course features hands-on training with explosion meters, oxygen meters, and other test equipment. Learn aspects of machine inspection and hazard abatement. A mock inspection of a local plant provides hands-on experience. Mar Tempe May San Diego Aug Los Angeles Sep 28-Oct 1 Tempe Dec 7-10 San Diego OSHA Cranes in Construction This course covers the best practices in crane and derrick operation using the OSHA Cranes and Derricks in Construction Rule as a guide. Course topics include hazards associated with crane assembly and disassembly, types of cranes, lifting concepts, rigging and wire rope, signaling, employee qualifications and training, and maintenance, repair, and inspection requirements. Students will participate in workshops to reinforce concepts of safe crane operation. Upon course completion students will have the ability to identify the types of cranes and their components and attachments, determine safe operating conditions, and recognize common violations of OSHA Standards. Gain knowledge of single and three phase systems, cord and plug connected and fixed equipment, grounding, ground fault circuit interrupters, hazardous locations and safety related work practices. 11 OSHA OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene According to the Archives of Internal Medicine (AIM), more than 60,300 fatalities result from occupational illnesses annually. Minimize the threat of illnesses by learning industrial hygiene practices and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Learn how to recognize potential health hazards in the workplace and define terms relating to OSHA health requirements. From workshops in health hazard recognition to air contaminant sampling, this course will give you the information you need to combat occupational illnesses. Topics include: Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, Confined Spaces, Ventilation, and Recordkeeping. Note: Recommended prerequisite course: OSHA 510, OSHA 511, OSHA 5109 or OSHA Requires appropriate clothing for field exercise. It is also highly recommended to bring a calculator to class.
