4 The OSHA Impact How Joining Georgia Tech s Family of Safety Professionals Leads to Success An interview with Rodrigues Rocky Smith, Safety Manager, Escoe Industrial Contractors, Inc. If you are looking for a family of safety professionals, then Georgia Tech is the place to be. Rodrigues Rocky Smith Rodrigues Rocky Smith has been part of the Georgia Tech OSHA Training Institute Education Center s (OTIEC) family for over six years. He has directly applied the knowledge he learned from our courses to his current job, and the results have been rewarding! With his newly acquired professional knowledge from completing consecutive industry courses, he has become an asset to his current team preventing multiple workplace incidents. This impact proves why the occupational safety and health program at Georgia Tech sets students apart from others in the industry. The instructors have real-world experience, Smith said. They have an open-door communication policy, making themselves available outside of the classroom, and even after the conclusion of the course, to give industry advice. He attributes his current career success to their mentorship. When Smith first embarked on his quest for OSHA training, he encountered programs that did not match his needs. He desired an OSHA program that could match his passion for safety with industry expert trainers, hands-on learning techniques, and more. He expressed his needs to a colleague, who then introduced him to Georgia Tech Professional Education s OSHA program. 18 Warner Robins Air Force Base A Success Story Continues... Last year we reported on the success of hosting on-site courses through Georgia Tech Professional Education. Our ability to provide an array of courses in safety and health, and tailor them to current organizational needs, generates a unique and successful professional training experience. This year the success continued for Warner Robins Air Force Base. Since 2011, Georgia Tech Professional Education has partnered with the Base to offer occupation safety and health training courses, including OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene, Machinery Standards, and others. On December 4, 2014, more than 30 Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex employees received certificates in Industrial Safety and Health from the Georgia Tech OSHA Training Institute Education Center. $1,500 each $200 each The training program saved Robins AFB $500,000 in travel and other costs Cost per course: Approximately $200 per employee (Off-base price: $1,500 per employee) Robins Air Force Base employees have earned 48 program completion certificates since the inception of the partnership

19 19 Why Georgia Tech: Georgia Tech Professional Education partnered with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to offer training at Robins Air Force Base. Safety is a priority at the installation, which has more than 20,000 civilian and military personnel. Instructors worked with senior leadership from the 78th Air Base Wing and from the Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex (WR-ALC). We are proud to offer our depth of experience and knowledge of OSHA regulations in this partnership with Robins Air Force Base. The employees received certificates from a nationally and internationally recognized engineering school, said Daniel J. Ortiz, MPH, CSP, manager of GTRI s Occupational Safety and Health Program Office. The Benefit: The training program saved the base $500,000 in travel and other costs, and resulted in new safety programs implemented across the facility, according to David Decker with the 78th Air Base Wing Safety Office at Robins Air Force Base. The 78th Air Base Wing, OSHA, and the American Federation of Government Employees Local 987 were essential to Georgia Tech Professional Education s ability to provide the training. We were able to use examples based on our experience at Robins Air Force Base, said James B. Howry, senior research associate at GTRI s Electronic Systems Laboratory. We integrated our subject matter expertise to help address their specific challenges. Howry estimated the cost of a course at $200 per person. This was a significant savings from the $1,500 per person to attend a similar course off-site. For Construction Industry, please begin with OSHA 510 (see page 8). For General Industry, please begin with OSHA 511 (see page 10). Are there courses with requirements or prerequisites? The OSHA 500, 501, 502, 503, 3115, and HAZ 1006 courses have prerequisites. Please go to the course page for details. We cannot allow/ grant exceptions for prerequisites and work experience. How can I check the courses that I ve taken? To request a Georgia Tech Professional Education Transcript, fill out the form at pe.gatech.edu/transcript. What is included in the course fees? The course fee includes all necessary classroom materials, OSHA, EST, and HAZ attendance certificates, applicable course tour, and badge identification. How can I purchase a CFR, and when will I receive it? If the CFR is required for your class, you should purchase it when you register. Each student who participates in a Georgia Tech Professional Education course is required to complete a profile. You should go to pe.gatech.edu/user/login to create a new account profile. You must fill out a Program Certificate Petition form for review the first day of class. If you earn your certificate for a one-day class, you will need to send in your petition form at least two days before the class begins. Otherwise your certificate will be mailed to you. When will I receive my course certificate? Georgia Tech s OSHA Training Institute distributes OSHA and HAZ certificates by mail, or on the last day of class. Georgia Tech s Professional Education Registrar s Office mails EST certificates after grades are submitted. How do I request a replacement certificate? If you are replacing an OSHA numbered course certificate, there will be a $25.00 fee, and you can request this by following the instructions here: pe.gatech.edu/replacecert.
