2 UEA has a new anti-spam appliance CanIt, which enables users to refine their own spam filtering. CanIt is flexible in allowing a range of filtering. For complex filtering, please refer to the CanIt user guide within the system. Logging on to CanIt How to log in from campus using a UEA Active Directory pc Computers that are part of the UEA Active Directory use a method called Single Sign On which allows you to log in once, and then to be automatically logged into other software. To log in to the CanIt Spam trap software go to the following address in your internet browser: If you are logged into a UEA machine you will be taken straight to the CanIt home page. How to log in off campus, from a non-active Directory pc, or from a generic username If you are not using an Active Directory pc, or you want to log in to a generic username (eg a shared address) see below. To log on from to CanIt from off campus you need to go to this address You will then be presented with the following log on page (figure 1): 1. Enter your UEA Username into the Username box followed by your domain e.g. [email protected] 2. Enter your UEA Password into the Password box. 3. Click on Log In to enter the CanIt system Figure 1 (CanIt log in page) NOTE: For a shared address the username eg [email protected] is required, rather than the address eg [email protected] Page 2

3 There is also the option to change the language settings, it will automatically be set as Browser Default; however, you can change this if you click on the drop down list next to language and then click on the appropriate language. IMPORTANT: Cookies need to be enabled on your browser in order to logon. See for advice. If you are having trouble logging in please contact the staff helpdesk on 2345 or Once you have logged in Having logged into the system you will notice in the top right: Logged in as <your Figure 2 (Log in successful) This shows that you have successfully logged in, please note that figure 2 also shows the links to Log out and CanIt s User s Guide Advanced Options: Notification You are advised to activate the advanced option which keeps the spam on the CanIt system, and allows you to check the messages. You can access this by Clicking on the Enable Expert Interface button as shown in Figure 8. (To go back to the basic version click on Simplified Interface in the navigation bar.) Once you have entered the Expert Interface the following actions will be set: Messages identified as spam will be caught in a spam trap Twice daily (0900 and 1200) Monday-Friday you will receive an with details of the messages that are in the trap. This allows you to train the system to recognise more spam. There are three options: o Do Nothing Message remains in the trap o Reject Message is deleted and the system learns that this is spam o Accept Message is moved to the inbox and the system learns that this is not spam NOTE: You do not need to enter an address for notifications, as the system will do this automatically when it receives a message. Please be aware that if you change the address to which notifications are sent, a clickable web form can be actioned by anyone who receives that . The system is now set up and you do not need to log in again. Information on removing spam Page 3

4 As stated above you will receive an as a clickable web form that will allow you to deal with the spam. Figure 3 shows the format of this. Figure 3 (Clickable web form) On receipt of the clickable web form OR 1. If all the messages are spam, scroll to the bottom of the message, click on 'Reject All as Spam' and the messages will be deleted. 1. If any of the messages are legitimate select 'Accept' in the Action column. This will return the message to your inbox and train the system to forward the message automatically next time. Select Reject in the Action column for each spam message. 2. Click on 'Submit' to send. NOTE FOR USERS OF OUTLOOK 2007 OR OUTLOOK WEB ACCESS: Page 4

5 Unfortunately Submit and Reject All as Spam in the do not work via Outlook 2007 or Outlook Web Access. This means that you will need to select View Trap at the foot of the in order to access the system and delete messages. Figure 4 (Result screen of Reject All as Spam in Figure 3) Trapped spam s If you are not able to use the clickable web form, you will need to log in to accept or reject the trapped . You need to navigate to the Trap Contents section of CanIt; this can either be done via clicking on the link that is displayed in the notification , or via the navigation bar: Click on Trap Contents Then Click Pending You should then be presented with something similar to Figure 5: Page 5

6 Figure 5 (Pending s) The three main options that you can select are: Do Nothing leave the status of the message as pending for the time being. Accept Message mark the message as not-spam so it will be moved to the inbox and accepted the next time it is received. Reject Message mark the message as spam so it will be deleted. IMPORTANT: These options are only available when the expert interface is enabled. It is also possible to mark all the pending messages for acceptance or rejection with the tick and the cross buttons, see Figure 6. You can also do a combination of marking all for reject or accept then changing individual options. Choose the red X to reject all messages. Choose the green check mark to accept all messages. Choose the question-mark to take no action. Figure 6 (Tick and cross buttons) NOTE: If there is more than one page of messages, reject all will act on the messages visible on a page, and you will need to process messages a page at a time. 7 The expert interface allows you to change a number of settings, which are documented in the CanIt User Guide. For example: You can change the settings for the notifications Click on the Preferences option in the menu Click Notification Figure 7 (Notification option) There are 3 types of notification o Clickable webform most useful as it allows you to take action without logging in (set as default) o Detailed notification lists the messages with full descriptions o Brief notification contains a link to the system to allow you to view the trap You can change the times or days that the notifications are sent to your address. A new notification will only be sent if new spam has been caught since the last notification Click on the Submit Changes button to confirm each change. Click on Add to Quick Links to create a shortcut to the Notification menu accessible from all other menus. Simple Interface The simple interface options are shown in Figure 8 below: Figure 8 (CanIt spam scanning selection) IMPORTANT: The selection that you have made will be highlighted in red, you will also have (current settings) located next to your choice. 8 What each selection means: Opt out of scanning: No spam filtering will be put in place and you will continue to receive spam. SPAM s have {Spam?} added to subject line: This is the initial setting before you have logged in. Spam will continue to be delivered to your inbox but will be marked with {spam} in the subject line of the . This can work in conjunction with Microsoft Outlook 2003, as it is possible to set up rules that filter s using the UEA- headers that are attached to the incoming spam . See our helpsheet E8 for more information. Delete anything believed to be spam (use with caution!): Anything that CanIt identifies as being spam will automatically be blocked from reaching your inbox and will be deleted. The sender will not receive a delivery failure message. Click on Set Spam-Scanning Level to confirm. IMPORTANT: Selecting the option Reject anything believed to be spam means those s are deleted and are not recoverable. To log out To log out of the system you can either click on the Log out button shown in Figure 2, or click on the Log out button shown in Figure 8. NOTE: If you logged in via single sign on the system will not allow you to log out. In this case close the browser window. Page 8
