The MED-EL BRIDGE to better communication is a program especially designed for education and rehabilitation to help bridge the gap between implantation and the development of improved listening skills and spoken communication. It offers a variety of communication packages for clinical and home use. This brochure lists available assessment materials, rehabilitation products and information brochures for adults and children who have received a cochlear implant. A brief overview of each product is provided as well as the price of each item. 3 PAEDIATRIC ASSESSMENT IDENTIFYING EARLY PHONOLOGICAL NEEDS Developed by Elaine Paden and Carolyn Brown in 1992, Identifying Early Phonological Needs (IEPN) provides an objective means of assessing speech capabilities and deficiencies in hearing impaired children. This test assesses the spontaneous use of first level phonological patterns in hearing impaired children. The IEPN samples broad categories that are basic in oral communication and assesses the early stages of speech acquisition. The test is suitable for children with low level verbal competency and is age independent. COMMON OBJECTS TOKEN (COT) TEST The COT Test is a sentence level designed to more adequately describe the auditory speech reception skills of profoundly hearing impaired children. While it is comprised of closed set tasks, these tasks range from moderately simple to quite complex because the test aims to assess the child at a level between basic closed set tasks and open set tasks. This prevents 2 common causes of low scores and failure to test: 1) children being intimidated by the complexity of an open set task and 2) children being too cognitively immature to test, as is sometimes the case with other currently available measures. The COT Test was revised in 2004 and is suitable for children with cochlear implants, from 3 years of age. The COT Test has 2 different testing levels: a quick test with 3 subtests and a full-length version with 6 different subtests. 4 PAEDIATRIC ASSESSMENT EARS EVALUATING AUDITORY RESPONSES TO SPEECH EARS is a multi-language test battery designed to assess auditory development of children before and after cochlear implantation. EARS was developed to follow the emerging auditory skills following cochlear implantation, as described by Ling (1976) and Erber (1982): detection, discrimination, identification, recognition, and comprehension. The EARS battery includes tests of different linguistic levels suitable for children of different ages. The test has a number of closed and open set speech perception tests, as well as questionnaires that can be completed by the child s parents and teachers. EARS is useful in assessing the long term evolution of auditory perceptual skills in pre-, peri- and post-lingually deafened children. The Auditory Questionnaire is the first module of the LittlEARS battery, which is designed to assess the preverbal auditory development in very young children. The LittlEARS Auditory Questionnaire is intended to follow the auditory development of children from newborn hearing screening to 24 months of age or hearing impaired children with cochlear implants or hearing aids with a hearing age (time after first fitting of the devices) of 0-24 months. The questionnaire was standardized on 218 normal hearing children aged 0-24 months and is currently being evaluated on children with cochlear implants. Expected values and minimal values are given for individual comparison. The questionnaire consists of 35 questions, which can be completed by parents. Completion instructions are provided on the questionnaire. It typically takes about 10 minutes for a parent or caregiver to complete. It is both a record book and an assessment tool for documenting early development of hearing-impaired children fitted either with a hearing aid or a cochlear implant. It includes: a diary to guide parents observations about their child, enabling the therapist to use these reports as an evaluation instrument for research and therapy; a parent book introducing the diary; a therapist book providing an overview of the milestones of auditory development during the first 2 years of (hearing) age and a guideline for clinical use of the diary; diary overview sheets for the therapist to document questions and observations taken from the diary and parent reports; and the First Words List for hearing impaired children, which categorically documents the first words spoken by the child. The Picture Perfect Preschool (PPP) package was designed to assist families who are just beginning the search for a preschool setting for their young child with hearing impairment. It also includes a helpful tool for evaluating a child s current preschool placement to determine if the use of audition, speech, language and academic skills are being maximized. The package includes: 20 questions to ask your future preschool; a guideline for parents to use when evaluating a potential preschool; the Parent Observation Checklist, which assists parents in focusing on and documenting observations about important listening and language targets that can occur throughout the various segments of a typical preschool day (circle time, snack time, etc.); and Teaching Tips, a simple guide parents can provide to the classroom teacher with suggestions to better serve the child with hearing loss in the classroom. 6 PAEDIATRIC ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST OF AUDITORY COMMUNICATION SKILLS The Checklist of Auditory Communication Skills is a measure that assists teachers, therapists, audiologists and parents in tracking the progress of a child s auditory development and in setting logical goals. It is designed for use with children of any age and skill level. This checklist is easy to use, especially to monitor a child s progress on a variety of developing skills over time. Developed by Nancy Caleffe-Schenck, CCC-A, CertAVT. Printed checklist packaged in sets of / 12 MAINSTREAM ASSESSMENT OF READINESS FOR CHILDREN OVER FIVE (MARCOF) The Mainstream Assessment of Readiness for Children Over Five (MARCOF) was developed by Cynthia S. Robinson, M.Ed., CED. This tool is designed for educators and parents of children who are deaf to use together for analysis of a child s readiness to enter mainstream education with hearing peers. Consideration is given to a variety of areas including standardized testing, listening behaviours, speech and language skills, auditory perception, academic skills, social/emotional development, and school and family concerns. The importance of each area for evaluation is explained in a short summary. A numerical scoring sheet targets a child s strengths and challenges and provides information on overall readiness, as well as highlights areas needing further intervention or support services. The kit includes a manual explaining skills that are considered important along with recommendations for assessment that will help gather the data needed to assist in decision making for successful mainstreaming. 8 PAEDIATRIC HABILITATION LISTENING IS FUN The Listening is Fun video aims to help children with cochlear implants learn to listen using fun, everyday activities. Developed in collaboration with the Yorkshire Cochlear Implant Service, the video demonstrates a variety of activities and games designed to foster the development of listening skills. The activities require only very basic toys and other items commonly found in the home and can be easily adapted according to children s interests and environment. DVD 10 / 8 MURAT READER SERIES The Murat Reader Series aims to provide an inexpensive habilitation tool for children with CI and their families. It also gives less experienced professionals and parents access to easy-to-use, comprehensive therapy materials. The Murat Reader Series enables professionals and parents to work with a child with a newly acquired ability to hear speech in a way that will promote development of spoken language. The story book has a child s page with a story about Murat, illustrated with a colour picture that includes speech bubbles and text. The parents page guides parents with discussion points, listening and speaking activities, and games to play for developing listening and language. Action and event cards, cardboard cut-outs, activity sheets and reference pages are included in the book. 9 PAEDIATRIC HABILITATION WORKING WITH YOUNG HEARING IMPAIRED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES The video Working With Young Hearing-Impaired Children and Their Families, is a guide for professionals. It outlines an observational approach to parent guidance. This enables parents to share responsibility for and play a major role in their child s development in listening and talking. The following aspects are addressed in the video: the aims of an observational approach; how to empower the parent in the therapeutic process; what skills the parent should develop through the therapeutic process; how to develop a child s ability to learn, listen and talk in a normal manner; and techniques for the professional to take on a facilitator role. A session checklist, detailing session goals, outcomes, and assessment of the child and parent observation, is also provided. CD containing video and session checklists in PDF format. 15 / 12 KIDTRAX KidTrax is a set of speech tracking materials designed for use with children (ages 5 to young adult) with cochlear implants and a wide range of skills and abilities. For teachers and therapists unfamiliar with Speech Tracking, a testing and training approach originally developed by Carol De Filippo and Brian Scott in the 1970s, included is a careful, step-by-step guide introducing this technique and providing tips and suggestions on how to familiarize the child with it. 10 PAEDIATRIC HABILITATION KIDS SONGS Kids Songs is a collection of 3 songs written and produced especially for use with hearing impaired children, though they could easily be enjoyed by any child regardless of hearing status. The songs I Can Clap My Hands, School Bus Blues and Here is What You Gotta Do not only promote fun and interactive learning, but they also provide valuable early exposure to music and rhyme. Each song includes repetition and interaction, components which maximize the child s participation and scaffold learning. 11 TEENS ASSESSMENT TeenEARS TeenEARS is a test battery specifically developed for teenagers with cochlear implants. It is comprised of seven tests and one questionnaire. These tests cover differing levels of language competence, as well as auditory skills and psycho-social issues. The listening skills range from basic (such as environmental sounds) to more complex (such as Speech Tracking) and include open and closed-set assessments. TeenEARS can either be used as a continuation of the MED-EL EARS test battery, or as a standalone assessment battery for newly implanted teens. This test battery was developed in conjunction with a number of centres currently working with teenagers, thus reflecting what is being used in the field. Test book Environmental Sounds CD, French, German 150 / 125 TEENS HABILITATION TesTrax MKT4058E Written by: Geoff Plant & Ilona Anderson TesTrax TesTrax is an assessment tool designed to evaluate speech perception skills using a modified version of Speech Tracking. Eight stories are included on this CD. Each story is segmented into a series of brief phrases; a score sheet is provided. TesTrax is suitable for older children and adults. CD format, German 75 / 65 TeenTrain TeenTrain is a training program aimed specifically at teenagers and young adults with cochlear implants. It provides teachers and therapists with a wide variety of speech communication training materials for use with this group of implant users. Detailed instructions are provided for the teacher/therapist as well as suggestions for follow-up exercises and activities. The aim of many of the activities is to not only improve the student s listening skills, but to also foster an interest in the intricacies of spoken language and word formation. For example, folk songs are used to introduce rhythm and rhyme, while other exercises look at word games such as Pig Latin and Rhyming Slang. This program provides clinicians and teachers with training materials that can be used with teenagers, older children, and young adults. It was specially developed to suit the needs of this growing group. TeenTrax is an effective and enjoyable approach to help teen cochlear implant users improve their communication skills. The training is based on an engaging adventure story of 2 boys hiking in the Adirondacks. It consists of Fire!, a 9217-word story, and some introductory and follow-up materials, such as crosswords and word search exercises. TeenTrax was developed by Geoff Plant. TEST A MUSIC PERCEPTION TEST BATTERY Musical Sounds in Cochlear Implants is a scientifically developed tool, originally written to assess music perception in cochlear implant users suitable for anyone. The Mu.S.I.C. Test is an instrument-based test, with specially composed pieces for certain subtests. The test is comprised of 8 subtests. Six modules assess specific musical skills, while two are subjective tests. The following modules are available on the The Mu.S.I.C. Test DVD: Pitch, Rhythm, Melody, Distinguish Chords, What Instrument, Number of Instruments, Emotional Perception and Dissonance. CD: The Mu.S.I.C. Test manual in PDF format and a registration page. 13 ADULT AURAL REHABILITATION AUDITRAIN Auditrain is a training programme designed to help CI users improve their communication skills. It contains 22 individual lesson plans, each containing both synthetic and analytic exercises. The synthetic materials question and answer exercises, lists of common sentences around a central theme, word matrices, and many other exercises are designed to help CI users optimise the use of their systems in everyday situations. SPEECHTRAX SpeechTrax is a resource for clinicians to use with individuals for whom conventional speech tracking may not be appropriate. Based on Geoff Plant s Commtrac, SpeechTrax features a modified version of Hans Christian Andersen s classic story The Tinderbox. This engaging story is divided into 53 sections, each of which consists of brief phrases (averaging 8 words each) for a total of 200 words per section. SpeechTrax has been shown to be an effective and enjoyable approach to helping CI users develop and improve their communication skills. HEAR AT HOME Hear at Home is aimed at meeting the needs of people with cochlear implants who require training and support without easy access to trained personnel. Hear at Home is designed for home use with family members and/or friends as the talkers. The exercises provide the talker with detailed instructions as to how the materials should be presented. Hear at Home is divided into 10 separate sessions. In each session, a series of speech sounds are introduced in words and sentences. Other exercises are provided for additional practice in the recognition of connected speech. 14 ADULT AURAL REHABILITATION SYNTRAIN Syntrain was created to meet the needs of a special group of adult clients those who have low reading skills. Syntrain is also useful for therapy with older children and teenagers. Syntrain has a series of pictorial exercises, which require little or no reading. Exercises involve spondees and trisyllables in isolation and in simple sentences, as well as picture-based sentences. ANALYTIKA Analytika is a collection of analytic test and training lists for use in testing and training adults and older children. Almost 600 lists are presented in a MS Word format on a CD to allow for easy editing and printing. This means therapists can adjust the words to suit regional dialects, etc. Analytika is suitable for: UK, Australian, New Zealand and South African. An instruction manual is provided in PDF format. The 13-movement composition is based on the melodies of Robert Burns. It includes a special set of instruments chosen with the current research related to music preferences of cochlear implant users in mind: a male vocalist, accordion, baritone saxophone, cellos, clarsach, contrabassoon, double bass, drums, horns, piano, tenor saxophones, trombones, trumpet, and tuba. Listeners experience these instruments in isolation as well as in small and large group ensembles designed to accommodate the needs of cochlear implant users when listening to music.
