1 Carry Out a Physical Search in the Aviation Security Environment Overview This unit is about carrying out a physical search in the aviation security environment, which may include a manual search of a bag or other item, a person, vehicle, aircraft or facility. This unit consists of one element: 1. Carry out a Physical Search in the Aviation Security Environment This element is about carrying out a physical search in the aviation security environment, which may include a manual search of a bag or other item, a person, vehicle, aircraft or facility. At all times you will comply with your organisation s procedures for heath and safety. This unit is for those undertaking aviation ground security activities. PPLAGSO11 1

2 Performance criteria You must be able to: Carry out a Physical Search in the Aviation Security Environment P1 work safely at all times, complying with your organisation s procedures for health and safety P2 identify when a search is required P3 identify the equipment required P4 ensure permission to carry out the search is obtained P5 carry out the search in line with your organisation's procedures P6 identify prohibited/suspect item(s) and take action in line with your organisation s procedures P7 resolve any situations arising within the limits of your own authority P8 confirm completion of the search activities P9 record the results of the search activities in line with your organisation's procedures PPLAGSO11 2

3 Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: Carry out a Physical Search in the Aviation Security Environment K1 your organisation s procedures for safe working relevant to the activity, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) K2 when a physical search is required K3 the different types of equipment that may be required K4 your organisation s procedures for obtaining permission to carry out a search K5 why permission to carry out a search must be obtained K6 your organisation s procedures for when permission to carry out a search is denied K7 the different types of searches that may be required K8 why and when searches are undertaken K9 the types of prohibited/suspect item(s) that could be detected K10 how and where a prohibited/suspect item(s) could be concealed K11 your organisation s procedures following the discovery of a prohibited/suspect item(s) K12 the importance of confirming completion of the search activities K13 the relevant recording and reporting lines and procedures as approved by your organisation PPLAGSO11 3

4 Additional Information Glossary Customer(s) In the aviation security environment this includes any person who passes through or has the potential to pass through a defined aviation security area, examples could include internal customers such as colleagues, line manager, trainees or external customers such as passengers, suppliers, contractors, visitors, staff, compliance authorities etc. Your Organisation This is the company you work for or are contracted to, or, if you are self employed, the rules you have set for yourself to ensure that you comply with relevant legal and licensing requirements. Organisation s Procedures These are the procedures your organisation has in place to ensure compliance with relevant rules, regulations, instructions, policies, procedures, legislation and laws relevant to the activity.
