5 Why do this? Source water assessment and protection (municipal and communal water supply systems) Sustainability of water supply sources Maintaining integrity of agricultural water resources Effects of land use changes (e.g., agriculture to subdivisions) ISDS and well setbacks Water rights issues Effects of gas and oil exploitation Protection of groundwater-fed wetlands. Groundwater contribution to in-stream flows and water quality

6 What is HESA? Hydrologic and Environmental Systems Analysis HESA is an approach used to conceptualize and characterize relevant features of hydrologic and environmental systems, integrating relevant considerations of climate, topography, geomorphology, groundwater and surface water hydrology, geology, ecosystem structure and function, and the human activities associated with these systems into a holistic, three-dimensional dynamic conceptual site model (CSM).

7 HESA Flowchart Systems-Scale Hydrologic System Conceptual Model Development Community Objectives Data Gathering and Analysis Regional and Site Conceptual Model Development Water Balance Calculation Atmospheric System--Climate Hillsides Channels, Lakes and Reservoirs Valley Bottoms and Wetlands Surface Water System and Components Groundwater System and Components Unsaturated Zone Saturated Zone Recharge, Discharge, Storage, Flow System Structure and Function Physical Chemical Structure and Function Physical Chemical Community Involvement Geomorphology Site Model Terrestrial Ecosystem Site Model Aquatic Ecosystem Site Model Hydrological System Physical, Chemical and Biological Final Conceptual Regional and Site Models; Water Balances Recommended Hydrologic System Management Community Decisions
