Many activities compete for your attention. There are soccer teams, swim clubs, baseball teams, scouting activities and, of course, homework. However, learning to play an instrument can add an element of fun that no other sporting event or activity can offer. Have you ever considered playing a string instrument? Joining school orchestra is a great way to make new friends, express your creativity, and have fun. You can learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass while you are at school. Some schools are even adding harps and guitars to their musical ensembles. You can also take private lessons from one of the teachers in your area and compete in district, state and even national competitions and festivals. You may even like it enough to become a music teacher or play in a symphony. Come along with us in the next few pages as we explore the world of strings and the school orchestra through a variety of fun activities. American String Teachers Association
It s the first week of school, and Mrs. Mozart, the orchestra teacher, is showing the students at Fillmore Elementary School all the cool string instruments.
Mrs. Mozart is telling the kids all about school orchestra how you can make new friends, learn to play an instrument and take part in fun and exciting concerts. American String Teachers Association
That s Madeline, a sixth grader, playing her violin. She is playing her favorite song. The violin makes a vibrant and warm sound.
Mark, who took part in orchestra festival last year and won a medal, is showing several students how to play the viola. The viola makes a deeper sound than the violin and is a bigger instrument. American String Teachers Association
Now Bella, who is also the student body president, amazes everyone at how well she plays the cello. The cello is much larger than the violin and viola and makes a deep, mellow sound. Lots of kids who play in the orchestra become leaders at their schools.
This is Zachary. Not only is he an awesome bass player, but he is also captain of his soccer team. He shows everyone his big case with wheels to take his bass from here to there. American String Teachers Association
Mrs. Mozart also invited a special guest today. She is a high school student named Anna who has been playing the harp since she was six. Anna says her harp has more than 40 strings.
Finally, Anna introduces Max who plays a tune on his guitar. When he finishes, everyone claps. 10 American String Teachers Association
The principal comes in to see what all the excitement is about. 11
Mrs. Mozart hands out papers for our parents to review. She asks if anyone has questions. The time to sign up for school orchestra is next week. 12 American String Teachers Association
A lot of kids raise their hands and tell her how excited they are to join orchestra. 13
To end the meeting, Mark, Anna, Max, Zachary, Madeline and Bella play Happy Birthday to Mrs. Mozart. 14 American String Teachers Association
The students serve cake and juice to celebrate. School orchestra is the best! 15
