4 FEATURED SPEAKERS DR. INGRID MATTSON is a scholar of Islamic Studies, an expert in interfaith relations and a Muslim religious leader. Since 2012 she has held the London and Windsor Community Chair in Islamic Studies at Huron University College in London, Canada. Dr. Mattson was educated in Canada and the U.S., earning a B.A. from the University of Waterloo (Ontario) and a PhD from the University of Chicago. From 1998 to 2012 she was Professor of Islamic Studies at Hartford Seminary (CT) where she developed and directed the first accredited graduate program for Muslim chaplains in America, and served as Director of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. From Dr. Mattson was elected and served as vice-president, then as president, of the Islamic Society of North America (USA). DIFFERENT; NOT TOO DIFFERENT: CARING FOR THE MUSLIM PATIENT DESCRIPTION: Caring for a patient from a different cultural or religious background can present some challenges while also serving as an opportunity for learning more about ourselves and understanding how others see us. There is no neutral culture, just as there is no standard model of a human being. Yet we cannot help but see ourselves as the norm and others as different until we have meaningful interactions with those whose bodies, beliefs or cultures are different than our own. The Qur an says that God created humanity From a male and a female into tribes and nations in order to know one another. Difference is therefore beneficial and generative of intellectual and social learning and development. This is the ethical framework in which Professor Mattson will discuss various religious and cultural norms a practitioner might encounter when supporting a Muslim patient. CHAPLAIN WILLIAM CORK is Assistant Director of Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries, the chaplain endorsing agency of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He also serves as Brigade Chaplain, 72d Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Texas Army National Guard. He has twenty five years of ministry experience, divided between military and university settings. He did Clinical Pastoral Education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He has taught college courses in world religions and has been active in many local interfaith organizations. In 2013, he deployed with the National Guard to Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He has lived and ministered in Houston since 1998.
5 RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN THE CLINICAL CONTEXT: A CHAPLAIN S PERSPECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Houston is now the most diverse city in the United States. Patients in the Texas Medical Center come from every part of the world, and bring with them widely varying religious beliefs and practices. Health care that is concerned for the whole person must respect and have some understanding of this diversity but we can t all become experts in world religions, particularly not after a single conference. In this presentation, I want to raise awareness of the issues from a chaplain s perspective, highlight local resources, and present some case studies that look at the intersection of faith and medicine. I do so from the perspective of a Seventh-day Adventist minister (a denomination known for its commitment to healthcare) who has ministered in interfaith contexts. OBJECTIVES: Engage participants in reflection on their own experiences with religious diversity. Celebrate the diversity of the Houston context and the resources we have for understanding and collaboration. Explore how compassion and understanding can bridge differences and create a space for healing. DR. JOAN ENGEBRETSON received her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. She attended Texas Woman s University in Houston, Texas for her Master of Science in Maternal/Child Health and earned a Doctorate in Behavioral Health from University of Texas Houston School of Public Health. She has been on faculty at University of St. Thomas for five years and she is currently a professor at UTHealth Science Center School of Nursing. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Society for Applied Anthropology and holds the Judy Fred Professorship in Nursing and Ethics. SPIRITUALITY, RELIGION, CULTURE AND NURSING DESCRIPTION 1. Define Culture and the relationship to religion and spirituality 2. Discuss cultural Competence or Sensitivity and Evidence based practice 3. Critique some current applications of cultural competence 4. Discuss spiritualty and religion and implications for health care OBJECTIVES 1. Identify how culture and religion may be related 2. Differentiate spirituality and religion 3. Discuss cultural and religious diversity 4. Discuss current applications of cultural competence and incorporating attention to spirituality and religion to health care delivery
6 Emma Josephine Loffelholz McMorris RN SPIRITUALITY AWARD CRITERIA SPIRITUALITY Demonstrates an awareness of the value of spirituality in healthcare. COMPASSION Demonstrates empathy with regard to all levels of diversity in others. COMMUNICATION Demonstrates the ability to communicate to their relative community the value of respecting the spiritual beliefs and practices of others. COMMITMENT Devotes self to the caring of body, mind and spirit. Emma Josephine Loeffelholz McMorris lived a vibrant life for 35 years, but the advances in early detection of breast cancer were not available in 1958 when she passed away one month after diagnosis. As a young woman, Emma was a bright scholar, a tennis player and loved the Opera, performing in her high school Operetta in She was a 1943 graduate of the school of nursing at St. Anthony s Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and served as a member of the Oklahoma Nurses Association and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. With the call for nurses during World War II, Emma willingly contributed her skills by joining and serving as an Ensign in the Navy Nurses Corps in the Naval Hospital at San Diego, California from November, 1944 to January, lt was there, while caring for the wounded soldiers, she met Marine Sgt. Sheridan Andrew McMorris, who she married. Emma and Sheridan settled in Boulder, Colorado and she was active in the Altar Society and the Christian Family movement of their church, Sacred Heart of Jesus. To their six children and the many other lives she touched, Emma s legacy is effervescence for life in tandem with a deep devotion for religion, spiritual care and caring for others. Emma s love for God and nursing are intertwined in her daughter, AnneMarie McMorris Flato s memories. She recalled her mother being the first person to lift her up as a child and pray with her while placing bandages on her tricycle-torn elbows and knees! AnneMarie says, My mother s presence was one of amazing, gentle grace that filled my soul and created lasting sacred moments that began a life-long yearning for God. Mrs. Flato believes her mother would want to honor the profession of Nursing as it so often is the gentle listening ear that patients turn to as they cope with the processes of illness and healing processes that frequently draw upon the spiritual longings of the soul. Awareness and valuing the spiritual side of a patient s journey will allow nurses to hear expressions of spiritual longings and make referrals for spiritual care, thereby providing more holistic caring moments for patient and healthcare professional alike. Congratulations to the nominees and finalists and blessings upon each of you in your nursing careers. Chaplain AnneMarie Flato
