3 Answering the call Faculty members Diane Maloney, DMin, and Paula Hiebert, PhD, assist students with their personal, spiritual, and professional development. Diane helps students with their field placements, and Paula challenges students to translate their scriptural analyses into ministry applications. The Institute of Pastoral Studies is a unique learning community of faith for adult students, offering a personally supportive and professionally challenging environment. Within this exceptional setting, students explore their own faith lives and how best to express their faith through a variety of career opportunities. Our students are typically professionals looking to enhance their current vocation, find a more fulfilling second career, or prepare for new professional ministry and service opportunities. With evening, online, and part-time options, the Institute offers students great flexibility. Our online MA in Pastoral Studies degree allows students to get their degree from home, work, or wherever best suits their schedule. Whereas university-based education for ministry has traditionally not been accessible for many individuals because of their distance from residential programs, or other life responsibilities, Loyola s fully accredited online program allows individuals to follow the same curriculum as our campus-based program, all from the convenience of their own home. IPS offers six graduate degrees and four post-master s graduate certificate programs. Class schedules are geared to working adults. Students have the option of part- or full-time study, and evening or weekend schedules throughout the year. In addition, non-degree seeking students may pursue course work as part of their continuing education or sabbatical program. 4 A native of India, Father Thomas Philip came to Loyola to earn the MA in Spirituality degree. He has served as Pastoral Associate at St. Pascal Catholic Church in Chicago, working with a diverse congregation of Polish, Spanish, and English speakers. 5 Examining the faith L oyola s Institute of Pastoral Studies is a place of open theological inquiry. Scripture, as well as Catholic and Jesuit values, are vital components of this educational experience. From the first orientation session, students are welcomed into a faith-based learning community, where fellow students, faculty, and staff provide support throughout their course of study. Students participate regularly in spiritual growth activities, including reflection groups and service opportunities, and they may benefit from the services of a spiritual director and/or pastoral counselor. Students also develop a rich network of contacts, who remain valued professional and spiritual colleagues after graduation. Faculty members, who bring distinguished records of research, publication, and professional experience to their posts, invite critical thinking and honest debate in the pursuit of truth. Course work not only challenges the intellect but provides practical applications as well. Many students complete an internship or practicum to help them apply their learning in ministry or not-for-profit work. Through the encouragement of fellow students and faculty mentors, students are guided to expand their ministry potential and their unique calling. The result is life-transforming. Pastor Laura Truax received the Master of Pastoral Studies and the Master of Divinity degrees and then was ordained as Senior Pastor of LaSalle Street Church, a non-denominational Christian church in Chicago. Within the church s community center, several urban outreach ministries make their home, including the LaSalle Senior Center. 6 7

6 Carolann Trainor, former executive director of a retreat center in Canada and graduate of the MA in Spirituality program, is now a student in the MA in Pastoral Counseling program and plans to put her new credentials to work in retreat leadership and pastoral counseling. putting faith to work The Institute of Pastoral Studies setting within Loyola University Chicago allows for a rich diversity of interdisciplinary studies and an abundance of resources. Students may combine their IPS studies with courses in relevant fields such as social work, philosophy, nursing, education, law or business. Chicago also offers a wealth of professional and academic resources, including unmatched opportunities to gain internship experience at a variety of world-class not-for-profit institutions, churches, and schools. Father Paul Maina from Kenya is applying his studies in Pastoral Counseling as he ministers to parishioners of St. Sylvester Church in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, a socially active parish that serves a largely Hispanic population. Students are drawn to the Institute of Pastoral Studies for its professional approach in preparing people to live out their faith in careers that fit their sense of calling and mission. Today, IPS graduates around the world are providing spiritual and professional leadership in churches, health care facilities, schools, counseling centers, social service and other not-for-profit agencies, as well as businesses. 7 programs of Study Leaving behind a prestigious career in marketing, Michael O Malley pursued his passion and became a full-time student at IPS. He earned master s degrees in Pastoral Studies and Divinity and now counsels as pastoral minister at St. Benedict Church in Chicago. MDiv (Master of Divinity) This comprehensive degree program is designed to meet the educational needs of persons called to professional ministerial leadership in the church and beyond. MA in Pastoral Counseling Pastoral clinicians in this program learn to effectively provide therapeutic services in faith-based contexts. MA in Pastoral Studies This degree program lays the groundwork for an effective and well-informed pastoral practice, both as a foundational first degree or as a midcareer refresher. The program can be pursued in two different ways either as an online program or through traditional classroom study. MA in Religious Education Participants in this program are prepared to articulate the faith to all ages, administer religious education programs, or teach religion in schools and parishes. MA in Social Justice and Community Development This interdisciplinary program offers the skills for assessing, analyzing, advocating, and confronting social justice issues. MA in Spirituality Participants in this degree program deepen their own spiritual understanding and are exposed to the insights, challenges, and practices that emerge from the great spiritual traditions. Students choose between two different tracks Spiritual Direction, or Contemporary Spirituality. Pastoral Counseling Certificate This certificate program prepares previously credentialed counselors to practice more effectively in faith-based settings. Religious Education Certificate Individuals are prepared for administrating religious education programs or teaching religion in schools and parishes. Social Justice and Community Development Certificate This certificate program prepares people for faithbased leadership in social advocacy, community and labor organizing, and systemic social change. Spiritual Direction Certificate Individuals are prepared for the specialized ministry of spiritual companioning
