1 Educator s Guide to Creating Narrative Report using Microsoft Word and the on-line Resource PebbleGo Overview: Students will research a historical figure and use the information found to fill out a graphic organizer or Thinking Map. Students will than write a narrative, collect related information and develop a Biographical Report. Grades and Subject Areas: Grade: 2-3 Primary Subject Area: Writing Additional Subjects Area: Science and Social Studies Objectives: Students will:! produce a written narrative on a historical figure.! use the PebbleGo, an online subscription based resource, to compile information.! create a biographical report. I can statements:! I can find information about an historical person using PebbleGo.! I can write a biography report from my research. Curriculum Connections: Alaska Writing Performance Standards (Grade Level Expectations) Grades K-3 1
2 The student writes about a topic by [2] Writing and organizing thoughts into a topic sentence and two supporting sentences [3] Writing a paragraph on a single topic with two or more supporting details Alaska Reading Performance Standards (Grade Level Expectations) Grades K-3 The student comprehends literal or inferred meaning from text by [2] Answering questions about information explicitly stated in text [3] Locating information explicitly stated in narrative and informational text to answer literal-comprehension questions ISTE Student Standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression 3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students. c. evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks process data and report results ISTE Teacher Standards: 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS S. Teachers: d. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. Technology Integration: Hardware and Software Needs Productivity tool such a Word Access to the Internet 2
3 Tips and tricks: Tip 1: Students will need the school username and password to login to PeggleGo. The school username and passwords can be obtained from your school librarian, ITT or by contacting Library Media Services. Tip 2: The graphic organizer can be used in a digital format and transferred using a flash drive orthe server then downloaded to the student computers and opened up using Microsoft Word. The bubbles in the graphic organizer are grouped text boxes, and were design so that students could type their answers in each bubble. Tip 3: (If students have an older version of Microsoft Word on their computers, the teacher will need to: Resave: File, scroll down to File Save As click on Format scroll down to Word Document (doc) and Save. Tip 4: Students should not copy complete sentences from their grade level resources but dates, events and concise details. Resources: Handouts or Downloads! Graphic organizer (See below) or Thinking Maps! Copy of 1 st - 2 nd or 2 nd - 3 rd Biographies checklist Web resources Students can use the resources listed below to collect information. Subscription based: PebbleGo (Elem.): 3
4 Lesson Plan Prep Time: 10 minutes 1. Determine where you will save the student work. 2. Familiarize yourself with the resource listed below. Online Subscription: PebbleGo: Prior to Lesson: 1. The teacher writes, I can statements on the board:! I can find information about an historical person using PebbleGo.! I can write a biography report from my research. 1. Find the Username and Password for your school. (See Tip 1) 2. Connect the computer to the document camera 3. Connect document camera to the projector 4. Turn document camera and projector on 5. Handout the 1 st -2 nd Biography Checklist or 2 nd - 3 rd Biography Checklist and a graphic organizer (See below, Tip 2 and 3) or Thinking Map. Time Needed for Lesson: Four-five one-hour sessions with computers so students can gather research and write their reports. Directions: Day one: 1. Teacher reads the I can statements to the class. 2. Teacher writes the name of the person they are researching on the graphic organizers in the Name of Person or where appropriate if using a Thinking Map and the students follow along. 3. Teacher logs in to PebbleGo and the students follow along. 4. Teacher clicks on the Biographies Database and the students follow along. 4
5 5. Students close their laptops. Teacher clicks on the tab Introduction, teacher clicks on the red speaker icon on the top left corner and allows the text to be read to the class. 6. Teacher clicks on the word Timeline and reviews the information with the class then clicks on the black and yellow icon to close out the window. 7. Teacher clicks on the word Video, clicks on the play button and the class watches the short video together. The teacher then clicks on the black and yellow icon to close out the window. 8. Students open their laptops. (Students may be timed out and may need to login to PebbleGo once again.) Teacher clicks on the tab Introduction and the students follow along. 9. By switching between the computer screen and the Document Camera the teacher models transferring the information from PebbleGo to the graphic organizer or Thinking Map. The students follow along using their computer and graphic organizer or Thinking Map. (See Tip 4) Day two: 1. Teacher reads the I can statements to the class as a review. 2. Teacher logs in to PebbleGo and the students follow along. 3. Teacher clicks on the Biographies Database and the students follow along. 4. Teacher clicks on the Early Life, tab and models transferring the information from PebbleGo to the graphic organizer or Thinking Map switching between the computer screen and the Document Camera if needed. The students continue to follow along using their computer and graphic organizer or Thinking Map. 5. The teacher decides how long to continue modeling. At some point, students should be allowed to independently compile information needed to complete the graphic organizer or Thinking Map using PebbleGo. 6. Students finish filling out the graphic organizer or Thinking Map. 7. Students begin to write their report using the information collected on their graphic organizer or Thinking Map. Day three and five: 8. Students finish writing their report using the information collected on their graphic organizer or Thinking Map. 9. Students peer edit and teacher edits their papers to final draft referring to the Primary Rubric for Biographies as needed. 10. Students type their reports using Microsoft Word or teachers considers doing one of the first three extension activities listed below. Extension/Challenge: 5
6 1. Students each select a person of interest to write a second report and independently compile information needed to complete the graphic organizer or Thinking Map using PebbleGo. The students print their individual reports and make a class book. 2. Students use the information to create a podcast book report. Teacher uploads a weekly podcast of this week s person of interest. 3. Students could download one or two images related to the early years, middle years, latter years, accomplishment or interests and import the image into Microsoft Word. 4. Students can fill out the Timeline handout using the PebbleGo timelines. 5. Students can do additional activities found on PebbleGo, Educator Resources, Lesson Plans and to find lessons. 6. Students use PebbleGo to study and write reports on important people for Black History Month. 7. Students use PebbleGo to study and write reports on important people for Native American Heritage Month. 8. Students use PebbleGo to study and write reports on the Grade Level Scientists. The below listed Grade Level Scientists are found on the PebbleGo online resource. 1) Kindergarten: John Muir: ( ), an explorer, naturalist and writer, campaigned for the conservation in the United States. 2) Kindergarten: Jonas Salk: ( ), an American research scientist, worked in the field of preventive medicine. 3) First Grade: George Washington Carver: (1864? 1943), African-American scientist who won international fame for his agricultural research. 4) First Grade: Wright Brothers: Wilbur ( ) and Orville ( ), American inventors who built the first successful airplane. 5) First Grade: Louis Pasteur: ( ), of France, contributions to chemistry, medicine and industry that have greatly benefited humanity. 6) Second Grade: Alexander Graham Bell: ( ), a Scottish-born inventor and educator, known for his invention of the telephone. 7) Second Grade: Jane Goodall: ( ), is an English zoologist who studies the behavior of animals. 8) Third Grade: Thomas Edison: ( ), an American, was one of the greatest inventors and industrial leaders in history. 6
