1 Practice Reaction Type and Predicting the Products For each of the following: The first one is an example. a. Determine the TYPE of reaction by looking at your Reaction Type Sheets and write the type in the space provided. Explain why the reaction is what you chose in the space provided. b. Determine the formulas of the reactants and the name and the formula(s) of the products, and write them in the spaces. Remember the diatomic elements. Really think about the products. The reaction of fluorine and sodium chloride is a Single replacement by more active non-metal. Explanation Both chlorine and Fluorine are non-metals (halogens) F 2 and NaCl Cl 2 and NaF the element chlorine and the compound sodium fluoride F 2 + NaCl Cl 2 + NaF 1. The reaction of aluminum and sulfur is a COMBINATION reaction. Explanation Two elements combine to form a compound Al + S Al2S3 aluminum sulfide Al + S Al2S3 2. The heating of gold (III) oxide is a DECOMPOSITION/ELECTROLYSIS reaction. Explanation There is one reactant, which is a binary compound Au2O3 Au + O2 gold and oxygen

2 3. The reaction of hydrogen and nitrogen is a COMBINATION reaction. Explanation Two elements combine to form one compound H2 + N2 H3N hydrogen nitride H 2 + N 2 H 3N 4. The electrolysis of sodium fluoride is a DECOMPOSITION reaction. Explanation There is one reactant, a binary compound NaF Na + F2 sodium and flourine NaF Na + F2 5. The burning of pentane, C5H12, is a COMBUSTION OF A HYDROCARBON reaction. Explanation C5H12 is a hydrocarbon and burning means combustion C5H12 + O2 CO2 + H2O carbon dioxide and water C5H12 + O2 CO2 + H2O

3 6. The decomposition of calcium nitride is an ELECTROLYSIS reaction. Explanation The reactant is a binary compound Ca3N2 Ca + N2 calcium and nitrogen Ca3N2 Ca + N2 7. The reaction of zinc and nitric acid is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction. Zn + HNO3 Zn(NO3)2 + H2 zinc nitrate and hydrogen Zn + HNO3 Zn(NO3)2 + H2 8. The reaction of lithium hydroxide and sulfuric acid is a DOUBLE REPLACEMENT reaction. Explanation The reactants are 2 compounds and they do not include a hydrocarbon and oxygen LiOH + H2SO4 Li2SO4 + H2O lithium sulfate and water LiOH + H2SO4 Li2SO4 + H2O

Potassium reacting with water is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction. K + H 2O KOH + H 2 potassium hydroxide and hydrogen K + H 2O KOH + H 2 3. Silver nitrate reacting with aluminum chloride is a DOUBLE REPLACEMENT reaction. Explanation There are 2 reactants which are both compounds AgNO3 + AlCl3 AgCl + Al(NO3)3 silver chloride and aluminum nitrate AgNO3 + AlCl3 AgCl + Al(NO3)3

5 4. The burning of methane, CH 4, is a COMBUSTION OF A HYDROCARBON reaction. Explanation CH 4 is a hydrocarbon, and burning is combustion CH4 + O2 CO 2 + H 2O carbon dioxide and water CH4 + O2 CO 2 + H 2O 5. The heating of iron III carbonate is a DECOMPOSITION OF A METALLIC CARBONATE reaction. Explanation Iron carbonate is a metallic carbonate; one reactant means it is a decomposition reaction. Fe2(CO3)3 Fe2O3 + CO2 iron III oxide and carbon dioxide Fe2(CO3)3 Fe2O3 + CO2 6. The reaction of copper and nitric acid is a SINGLE REPLACEMENT reaction. Cu + HNO3 CuNO 3 or Cu(NO 3 ) 2 and H 2 copper nitrate and hydrogen Cu + HNO3 Cu(NO 3 ) 2 and H 2 7. The heating of cupric hydroxide is a decomposition of a metal hydroxide reaction. Explanation Only one reactant is mentioned, therefore this must be decomposition Cu(OH) 2 CuO and H 2 O copper (II) oxide and water
