1 w/c 12/01/2009 2/01/2009: Experiment badge (1 of 2) Time Activity Notes Who 5 Welcome & Opening Ceremony Start the evening and explain to them what they will be doing that evening. 10 Main Activity 1: Torch Investigation - Ask the Beavers how they think a torch works. - Take their ideas and then allow them to take apart their torches to try and work it out. - Talk about the job of the switch in completing the circuit so that the electricity can get from the battery to the bulb. The batteries providing the power and bulb providing the light. - It is possible to get really cheap see through torches where the Beavers will be able to see what is ing inside the torch while it is working 10 Main Activity 2: Catch A Rainbow - Get the Beavers to do this in small groups. - Pour a cup full of milk into the bowl - Get the Beaver to carefully put a few drops of red food colouring close to the edge of the bowl. - Put a few drops of blue a 1/3 of the way round from the red and then a few drops of yellow a 1/3 of the way round from the blue - Tell the beavers that next they are going put a squirt of washing up liquid in the middle. What do they think will? - Let them squirt some washing up liquid into the centre of the bowl. What s The dish soap does not mix with the milk. Instead it floats on top and spreads over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colour we dropped into it. Where the colours meet, they combine to form new colours 10 Main Activity 3: Telephone Calls - Give the Beavers string, selloptape and 2 plastic cups in small groups - Tell them you want them to think of a way of talking to someone at the other side of the room without shouting to them. Get the Beavers to discuss ideas - To make a telephone the beavers must stick the piece of string through a small whole (adult to make) in the bottom of the cups and stick it to the inside - To use the telephone they must stand far enough apart from each other that the string is pulled tight. - When one person talks into their cup and the other puts their cup to their ear they will be able to hear what the first person is saying - Discuss that this works because the sound waves travel down the string. 10 Main Activity 4: Rocket balloons - Cut a piece of string about three metres - Tape 1 end to the wall - Thread a straw onto the piece of string and take it up to the wall end Equipment: Torches Experiment - Investigate something of interest to find out how it works Equipment: Shallow bowl, red, blue and yellow food colouring, milk, washing up liquid Experiment -Try and work out Equipment: string, sellotape, plastic cups, scissors Equipment: Long balloons, string, straw, sellotape.
2 - Blow up a long balloon but don t tie it just hold the end ask the Beavers which way should we tape the balloon onto the straw if we want it to rocket along the string - Attach the balloon to the straw with the open end facing the wall - Send a beaver to hold the other end of the string so that the string is tight - Let go of the balloon - Its often fun to do this in two teams and race each other. 10 Caterpillar Trail - Divide the Beaver Scouts into teams (possibly their Lodges). - Each team lines up behind the other and grasps the waist of the Beaver Scout in front. - The first person in each team is the head and has the catch the last person in the team which is the tail by dragging everyone with them but the tail tries not to get caught! 5 Closing Ceremony Wrap up the evening, give out any notices for next week etc. Notes: Remind Beaver Scouts of the importance of playing sensibly otherwise someone may get hurt. 4 w/c 19/01/2009 /01/2009: Experiment badge (2 of 2) Time Activity Notes Who 5 Welcome & Opening Ceremony Start the evening and explain to them what they will be doing that evening. 10 Main Activity 1: Colours of a Pen - Give each Beaver a couple of 7cm long strips of blotting paper - Get them to put a 1cm circle of a chosen colour on their piece of blotting paper about 2cm up from the end - Attach it to the middle of a pencil and rest it across a plastic cup so that the blotting paper hangs down into the cup. - Take it out of the cup and put in a small amount of water enough that the water will touch the paper but the pen dot. - Put the pencil back across the cup and ask the beavers what they think will to their pen dot. - As the water soaks up the paper the colours in the ink will separate out. Explain to the Beavers this shows what different colours make up that colour ink pen. 10 Main Activity 2: Lava Lamp - 3/4 fill the bottle with vegetable oil - Mix together enough water to fill the rest of the bottle with food colouring in the jug - Pour in to the bottle and tighten the lid - Let the beavers experiment with turning the bottle upside down - Why do they think that the colour stays separate from the oil? - Talk about the fact that oil and water do not mix 20 Colony Activity: Float or sink challenge - Divide the colony into two teams - Give each team a big deep container of water - Give each group a list of items (on recording sheet) get them to predict as a group whether they will float or sink. - Give half the items to each group - Give one group 2 oranges and the other group two lumps of plastercine - Get the groups to test whether the items float or sink - Get the group with the orange to predict whether the orange will float or sink and test it. Now peel the 2 nd orange do they think this will float or sink? Test it - Get the group with the plastercine to test their ball of plastercine. Now ask them to make the other ball of plastercine into a boat and test it. - Go through the items with the team who didn t have each items saying what they predicted and the team who tested it telling them if they are right or wrong. - Get the groups to explain what they did with the plastercine and the orange and what the results were. 5 What have we found out - To meet the requirements of the badge the Beavers must report back on what they have done and found out. - Have the Beavers in a circle and go round and ask them each to Equipment: Blotting paper, range of colouring pens, plastic cups, pencils, sellotape Experiment - try and work out Equipment: small plastic bottle per group, vegetable oil, food colouring, water, jug Experiment -Try and work out Equipment: string, sellotape, plastic cups, scissors Resources: Recording sheet Tell others in the Colony what they saw and discovered Experiment: Tell others in the Colony what they saw and discovered
5 tell about something about one of the experiments they have done in the last two weeks. 5 Game: Circle Relay (POL 168) - Split the Section into equal teams and give each person a number within their team - Teams lie down on the ground, face up, fanned out in a circle with their heads facing the middle - Shout out a number, and the person from each circle with that number gets up and runs around the circle jumping over the other team members - Once around they lie back down and the whole team repeat the move in ascending number order until the whole team have completed the task. - The first team to complete the cycle is the winner. 5 Closing Ceremony Wrap up the evening, give out any notices for next week etc. Notices: Give out any notices for the coming weeks.
