2 Theme In line with current developments at EU level on intra-eu mobility of professionals and the European Commission s agenda on jobs, ESN is exploring key issues around the social service workforce. We are focussing on social workers and social care professionals working in all areas of social services from child protection to services for people with disabilities and older people. In addition to themes around mobility, recruitment and training, we are also exploring the role of new technology for planning and training, joint work between professionals, and the workforce s role in quality. Shereen Hussein, Chair at the Social Care Workforce Research Unit at King s College London, has helped us put together a comprehensive questionnaire, which forms the basis of our research. It covers issues around the recruitment, retention and training of social workers and social care workers, as well as regulation and workforce planning. The questionnaire has been sent to variety of different organisations inside and outside our network that have an expertise in the field. In cooperation with the Slovak Presidency of the EU, ESN is organising a seminar on November 2016 in Bratislava where we will present preliminary findings of our research and the questionnaire as well as consult participants on our research. In addition, we are inviting a variety of experts from across Europe who will give participants an insight into current policies and strategy relating to the social service workforce at EU, national and local level. Aim of the Seminar The seminar will continue ESN s debate on the social service workforce, focussing in particular on those working in social work and social care. Based on background research and the questionnaire on the social service workforce that ESN launched in June 2016, ESN and experts in the field will address common challenges and present potential solutions and opportunities regarding recruitment, retention, training, workforce mobility within the EU (and beyond), regulation, and workforce planning. Considering EU initiatives and frameworks, national policies and local practices, we will explore how activities at these different governance level can be aligned to form an effective workforce strategy for social services. Participants will be able to discuss with researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and advocacy organisations the key issues facing the social service workforce in Europe. The seminar is an opportunity for about 100 participants and speakers to influence our research and the analytical report ESN will be publishing on this topic in early 2017.
