1 Regional Industrial Policy Seminar 1 Gothenburg and Trollhättan, Sweden, 25 th 27 th May 2016 Regional industrial policy after a large manufacturing plant closure Background to the seminar This is the first in a series of Regional Industrial Policy Seminars (RIPS). They are an integral part of the Pilot Project The Future of Manufacturing in Europe. This is an EU financed project and has been delegated to the EU Agency, Eurofound. These seminars will investigate and assess the role of regional actors and policies in promoting employment in light of the very significant economic and technological challenges and opportunities for manufacturing in Europe. The theme of this particular seminar is how policy implementers can best approach the re-development of a region that has experienced a large plant closure in the manufacturing sector. The seminar takes place between 25 th and 27 th May 2016, in the region of Trollhättan/ West Sweden which experienced significant restructuring in the aftermath of the SAAB bankruptcy, While the majority of the speakers are from the Swedish region, there are presentations of other cases of manufacturing restructuring in Europe. Various aspects of regional initiatives, following a plant closure, will be presented by the involved parties. For example, representatives of the regional development agencies, the municipality, education and training institutions and the public employment service. These representatives will have hands-on knowledge of the policy implementation process. The seminar will be strongly oriented towards discussion, sharing of experiences and learning for all the participants with a view to gaining a deeper understanding of how to construct and conduct positive policy processes. 1
