AIA Richard Spencer is a British Chartered Architect with more than thirty years of experience in architectural practices from local to global. Richard has been a practice principal for 20 years, the last 15 of which were as Aviation Director for the London office of HOK, one of the largest design practices in the world. Having become an expert in this field through his involvement in many landmark projects, Richard has spoken extensively at Airport conferences, published articles and been interviewed on TV discussing airport design and development. In addition to his work in transportation, Richard has a broad range of experience gained on many substantial and successful projects in other fields; these include government, industrial, commercial, academic and laboratory projects. In April 2010 Richard established his own consultancy specialising in providing strategic design advice on airport and railway station design projects. Responsible for leading the aviation and transportation design group in London, Richard worked closely with HOK s global Aviation leadership and, in 2005, was appointed a director of that group. Richard also held a varied range of responsibilities on the Board of Directors of HOK s London office. Highlights of Richard s career at HOK include twelve years as HOK s Project Director for the Passenger Transport Interchange at Heathrow s Terminal 5, working with BAA in defining the project requirements, then subsequently developing and delivering design for the six-platform rail station under the main airport terminal building in liaison with Richard Rogers & Partners as they were then. 3 Cecil Denny Highton & Partners, London Joining CDH as a Project Architect, Richard took responsibility for a number of projects including the restoration of an historic school building in Gosport Hampshire and office developments in Farnborough Hampshire and next to Tower Bridge in London. Richard was appointed an associate of the practice and then, in 1990, became an equity partner, helping to lead the practice through a recession and to financial strength. In 1995, following an approach from HOK and looking to expand the practice s horizons, the partners merged CDH with HOK s London office to form a new integrated practice which subsequently grew from 90 staff to well over 200. This small practice of 6 to 8 people was focused on both design and practice management excellence and Richard was involved in all aspects of each project. For the directors suite at the United Biscuits factory Richard also designed bespoke joinery.
