Revu Tutorial: Saving Markups in the Tool Chest Revu s Tool Chest enables you to efficiently add markups to your PDF files. The Tool Chest stores commonly-used markups so you can easily access them when you need them. For the purpose of this tutorial, markup and tool will be used interchangeably. By default, the Tool Chest is located in the left panel of the Revu interface. Open this panel and click on the Tool Chest tab to view its contents. If you do not see this tab, on the Command Bar click View > Tabs > Tool Chest or press Alt+X to display the Tool Chest tab. Tool Chest Sections The Tool Chest is divided into three main sections My Tools, Recent Tools and custom tool sets that are shown by name. Each section of the Tool Chest is denoted by a title bar with a disclosure triangle and a gear menu. Click the triangle to collapse the section while leaving it quickly accessible for later; to hide the section completely click > Hide. To show a hidden section again click the Manage Tool Sets menu in the button bar, then click the section you wish to show. My Tools is a permanent storage area for markup annotations that you use frequently. Any annotation stored in this panel will remain between sessions of Revu. Recent Tools records each markup as it is made. This enables you to easily reuse a markup that you have recently created. Click on the previously used markup and then click on the document to place the markup. Custom Tool Sets: You can add multiple tool sets in addition to the standard My Tools and Recent Tools. 1
Sequences & Actions A Sequence allows a text based markup to increment in value each time that a markup is added to the PDF. The updating sequence value can be a number or text. An Action allows you to add hyperlinks to tools in the Tool Chest. By right-clicking on a tool in a tool set, you will find several settings options that can be applied to that tool. 2
Duplicate: Create an exact replica of a markup in a tool set. When duplicated, all of the markup properties will be copied as well. This is a helpful first step when you need to create the same tool in different colors for your tool set. Change Colors: Change the color of a markup in a tool set without having to recreate the tool. Select the Source Color you want to change, then select the Destination Color to indicate the new color. The change will be shown in a preview window. Sequence: Apply a number, letter or Roman numeral sequence to a markup in your tool set. The markup must be grouped with a text box as a placeholder in order for the sequence to work correctly. Drag your grouped markup from your Recent Tools into a tool set or to My Tools. Right-click on the markup and select Sequence/Define. There are several sequencing options to choose. You can choose a numerical, Roman numeral or alphabetical Style and enter a Prefix or Suffix for the sequence. You also have the ability to choose the number or letter for the sequence to start, how the sequence will automatically increment, and the rate at which the markup will reset within the sequence. Action: Allows you to define Hyperlink properties to a markup in the PDF or a tool in the Tool Chest. Creating an action in the Tool Chest allows you to quickly add a hyperlink to a place in the PDF document, to an external file, or a location on the Internet. Defining Actions 3
There are five settings the Action can be configured to perform. Jump to Page: Moves to a specific page number in the current PDF. Enter the page number to specify which page number to jump. When the bookmark is clicked, the selected ( jumped to ) page is displayed in the primary Revu workspace. Set the zoom factor or scale of the page that is displayed by choosing the desired setting in the Scale drop-down. The pages can be set to display either in a Fit Page, Actual Size, or Fit Width mode. Alternatively the Inherit Zoom setting will display the page at whatever the current zoom setting is within Revu. A link may be inserted to an external document by choosing the filename in the document list. The document must be open in the current session of Revu in order for it to be displayed in the list. Jump to Place: Moves to a predefined, arbitrary place that can be anywhere in an opened PDF. Places can be changed later without breaking the action. To define a new place from within the Action dialog, click Create. Jump to a place in another opened PDF by selecting that PDF name in the Jump to list, then select a Place from list. Snapshot View: Allows you to choose a specific zoomed in area of the PDF. This option is useful for zooming into specific views of a region of a large format drawing, such as a particular elevation detail. Click the Get Rectangle button to define the area of the drawing the to jump to. Hyperlink: Defines a URL to open when users click on the bookmark. The URL will open in a WebTab in Revu, or in the default browser on your user s workstation. Click Settings > Preferences > WebTab and change the "Open PDF Hyperlinks in WebTabs" setting to change if the URL opens in a WebTab or browser. Open File: Links to a specific file. Click the button to open a file browser. Relative and Full Paths The Action dialog can store either a full or relative path to a file. When a full path is stored, the location of the file is defined from the drive it resides on; when a relative path is stored, it defines the location of the linked file relative to the current file. A full path is best when you plan to move the file storing the link but not the file being linked to, such as when the linked file resides on a network drive that is accessible to all users. A relative path is best when both files are liable to be moved, such as when you are archiving an entire project to CD, or taking a project home on your laptop. To use a relative path, click Use Relative Paths in the Action dialog. Change the default setting for this option in the Preferences for Markups. Setting a Full Path Saving the full path ensures that the link will continue to work if you copy Current file.pdf to another location, like the Desktop of your computer, while leaving the linked-to file in the same place. The hyperlink continues to work because the path includes the drive and full folder path of the other file. 4
Setting a Relative Path Saving the relative path is useful if you move all of the files to another location. For example, you might want to copy all the files of a project to your laptop because you will be out of the office. In this case relative paths would continue to work after the files are moved because the drive is not included only the relationship between Current file.pdf and Baker Project\Baker file.pdf is saved in the link. NOTE: This example shows the Open File setting, but Use Relative Paths also applies to the Hyperlink, Snapshot, and Jump to File settings. 5
