3 Learning Environment (Cluster) / Practice Experience Philosophy or Mission Statement E3 ward Philosophy: Ward E3 is a respiratory ward staffed by a team of dedicated nurses, healthcare assistants and other healthcare professionals whose aim is to offer care, respect and dignity to all patients form admission through to discharge. We are a 28 bedded ward caring for people of all ages and backgrounds suffering with respiratory conditions. Our aim is to make those people admitted to our care feel as comfortable as possible and to uphold and promote equality, diversity, respect and dignity and inclusion in decisions of their care and treatment, throughout their stay. We aim to provide an area contusive to learning and support are colleagues and students to ensure that the best quality care is provided at all times. All of our team are dedicated to the wellbeing of patients in our care and can offer care and advise to relatives and carers at all times. We aim to make their stay with us as pleasant as possible- nothing is too much trouble. Description of the Service we provide and Client groups who may access it: Care is provided for patients with respiratory conditions either acute or chronic. We have admissions from the acute assessment unit and form the emergency department. We take transfers form HDU and ITU and we work quite closely with the critical care team. Patients on E3 are very acutely ill and we have a dedicated area in bay1 to monitor patients more closely. OUR EXPECTATIONS OF LEARNERS WHILST ON THIS PRACTICE EXPERIENCE: We expect you to arrive on time for planned shifts and other activity identified by your mentor. We expect you to ensure your mentor is aware of your learning outcomes for the placement and specific learning needs. We expect you to act in a professional manner We expect you to maintain and respect confidentiality and dignity at all times. We expect you to raise any issues regarding your placement with you mentor. We expect you provide basic nursing care to patients and be aware of their every day needs Page 3 of 7

4 LEARNER INFORMATION Is an Introduction Pack/ Student Handbook available? Yes- Please ask your mentor for a copy Induction / Orientation Programmes Welcome pack will be issued. Orientation will be provided and the ward will provide a tour around the hospital Dress / Uniform Code Student nurse uniform, black shoes No jewellery except wedding band and stud earings See uniform policy on intranet Staff room / Rest Room facilities Staff room on the ward. Staff toilets at the entrance of E3. Kitchen on the ward with microwave and fridge. The use of the staff canteen on B floor. I Work Pattern (e.g. Shift patterns, start & finish times) Long days weekdays and weekends. Night Prior recommended reading / websites / resources British lung foundation British thoracic society Common assessments / interventions / procedures / treatments / evaluations All patients will have risk assessments completed within 24 hours of admission. These include moving and handling, MUST, falls risk and pressure ulcer risk. Procedures that take place are: ultra sound of the chest. Pleural tap and insertion and removal of chest drains. CT chest. Patients requiring non invasive ventilation ( Bipap and CPAP) Page 4 of 7

5 Care of patients with tracheostomies Spirometery Common conditions seen Type 1 and type 2 respiratory failure Pleural effusions Pneumothorax Pneumonia Chest infections COPD Asthma General medical conditions eg. 6 Drug and consultant ward rounds Working with outreach team LIST of LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES available in Linked areas / spoke organisations o spend a week with the respiratory nurse specialist and lung cancer specialist. Attending clinics regarding asthma, sleep apnoea, lung cancer and TB. To attend bronchoscopy LIST of Inter professional learning opportunities for students on placement To work with the respiratory nurses, Pain nurse specialists (What other health/social care workers will the student encounter whist on placement in your area? (e.g. health visitors, police, probation officers, medics, health care assistants, pharmacists etc.) Specifically for Nursing students, are there opportunities on this placement for the student to have experience of working with other client groups, in order to meet EU Directives. E.g. Maternity care N/A Child Care N/A Mental Health Patients are admitted with underlying mental health problems. Patients are sometimes transferred from Parklands hospital or Thornford secure unit. Learning Disability Occassionally patients are admitted from learning disability care homes.
