Iowa ranks 2nd nationally in terms of the importance of manufacturing to the state economy. Iowa is home to about 6,100 manufacturing firms. 95 percent of Iowa's manufacturing firms are owned by small to medium sized enterprises with fewer than 500 paid employees. Iowa's manufacturing employment level in 2006 was 238,335 jobs, accounting for 11.8% of the state's total employment. Iowa's manufacturing workers earn an average $44,310 per job in annual wages and salaries, ranking 2nd highest by major sector in the state's economy. Iowa exported $7.83 billion worth of manufactured goods in 2006.

2 Importance of Manufacturing to the State In 2006, manufacturing contributed $26.1 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to Iowa's economy. Manufacturing ranks 1st in size among major sectors of the state's economy when measured by GDP. Manufacturing GDP represented 21.0% of Iowa's total GDP in 2006, placing Iowa 2nd among the states in percentage of total GDP from manufacturing. Iowa's manufacturing employment level in 2006 was 238,335 jobs, representing 11.8% of total employment. 3 Size and Location of Manufacturing Firms Iowa is home to 6,100 manufacturing firms operating from 6,580 physical establishments located throughout the state. 2,779 of Iowa's manufacturing firms are small proprietorships or partnerships with no paid employees other than the principals. 3,007 manufacturing firms in Iowa are owned by small or medium sized enterprises (SMEs), which are defined as having fewer than 500 employees on their payroll. 4 County Dependence on Manufacturing Among Iowa's 99 counties, manufacturing employment averages 12.7% of total nonfarm employment. 8 counties in Iowa have more than 25 percent of their total nonfarm jobs in the manufacturing sector. 65 counties in Iowa have percent of their nonfarm jobs in manufacturing. The table at left classifies Iowa s 99 counties by their dependence on any of five basic sectors: manufacturing, farming, mining, service, or government. Counties that are not highly dependent on earnings from one particular sector constitute a sixth group of nonspecialized counties. The criteria for manufacturing dependence is an annual average of 25 percent or more of total worker earnings derived from manufacturing during a 3-year reference period.
