4 Atila MENEVŞE Chairman of Board Adana Chamber of Commerce The priority of Adana Chamber of Commerce, which is one of the oldest and the most influential Chambers in Turkey, is to increase the wealth and wellbeing of its members and the Adana community in general. Having this in mind, as Adana Chamber of Commerce, we put special emphasis on increasing our members awareness about international business opportunities and we encourage them to establish deeper and long-lasting business relations with foreign companies. Accordingly, with the support and the guidance of Ministry of Economy we have constituted two clusters of companies among our members, namely The Cluster of Machinery and Machinery Parts Producers and The Cluster of Furniture Makers. The logic behind forming such clusters under the roof of Adana Chamber of Commerce is to reinforce cooperation and collaboration among our members operating within the same line of business and increase their competitiveness abroad. The Cluster of Machinery consists of 13 companies located in Adana and the total sales revenue of these companies exceeded 30 million USD and their exports reached 3 million USD in We truly believe that these figures are far below than the actual potential of our members and owing to the synergy created by the formation of clusters, our Machinery and Machinery Producers will be able to develop their business abroad. Also, business delegation visits abroad will help our local producers to increase their presence abroad and some of the cluster members will consider investment and partnership opportunities abroad. The following pages of this report will give detailed information about Machinery Industry in Adana and Members of Machinery Cluster. Also, on behalf of The Executive Board of Adana Chamber of Commerce I would like to invite foreign companies to explore the countless business and investment opportunities offered by Adana, which is a powerhouse in its region owing to its: - Strategic location across the energy pipelines, close to ports, - Extensive infrastructure, free and industrial zones offering various tax advantages for potential investors, - Highly trained and affordable human capital. 5 ADANA PROVINCE Strategically located at the crossroads of the Middle East and Europe, Adana is one of the five largest economic, social and cultural centers in Turkey. The Adana Kebab, which lent the city its fame for centuries, has recently been trademarked. In this hospitable southern town you can experience warm, bright sunshine on the coast at the flamingo haven of Karatas and refreshing coolness in the snow-covered uplands of the Taurus Mountains all in the same day. Located on both sides of the Seyhan River, and expanding around the Seyhan & Çatalan dam lakes, Adana is painted green and blue, to the surprise of the first-time visitor or business traveler. The Taurus Mountains offer a spectacular backdrop to the city. Two important factors make Adana attractive for investment: the low cost of living and easy access to the Turkish and international markets with the existing interstate and transportation facilities. A mild climate and rich soil make Adana the bread basket of Turkey. The city is the marketing and distribution centre for an agricultural region that produces cotton, wheat, barley, grapes, citrus fruits, olives and tobacco. Its main industries are textile manufacturing, tanning (leather), and the processing of wool and various food items. With the Isken power plant investment signed between Germany and Turkey, Adana became the country s fifth largest recipient of foreign investment in 2003, mainly in the chemical and food sectors. The 1210-megawatt coal power plant has been in operation for two years. The current strategy for promoting the city to overseas investors is to operate and maintain the largest industrial zone in the country, only 20 km away from central Adana. In the industrial zone, 225 companies are already active, primarily in the textile, heavy industry/metal, food, ready wear, plastics and machinery sectors. One of the most significant economic developments for this region, along with the whole of Europe and many world energy markets, is the soon-to-be-completed Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan oil pipeline, of which 80% passes through Turkey, terminating on the Mediterranean Sea, less than one-hour s drive from Adana. This pipeline will provide the countries of the Mediterranean and beyond with easy Access to the vast oil and gas reserves of the Caspian Sea. For Adana, the prospects of a new petrochemical industry in the region are enormous. ADANA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Adana Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest city Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Turkey, was founded in 1894 in compliance with the orders of the Ministry of Commerce and Agriculture with the aim of controlling and regulating commerce, particularly in cotton trade. In 1966, upon the request of our Industrialist members, and agreement of the Chamber council and the permission given by the Ministry of Commerce a separate Chamber of Industry was founded. Thereafter the title of our Chamber has been changed to Adana Chamber of Commerce (shortly ATO) according to the Law numbered 5590, and it has been operating under this title ever since. ACC has taken over the mission of leading, guiding and participating in the development and organization of several business sectors, encouraging new enterprises in Adana. ACC has always acted as a guide and enterpriser in the inauguration of business sectors to world trade. Today, total number of members exceeded , which makes Adana Chamber of Commerce one of the largest and most influential business organizations in its region and Turkey. 3

6 FOREIGN TRADE IN MACHINERY INDUSTRY Turkey has been a net importer of machinery and machinery parts. Nearly 30 billion USD, while its exports totaled 13 billion USD. In other terms, the trade deficit in machinery industry has been shrinking since the last decade. 8 ADANA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CLUSTER OF MACHINERY & MACHINERY PARTS PRODUCERS Turkish Ministry of Economy attaches great importance to the development of Turkish small and medium sized (SME s) Turkish firms and developed several strategies to help SME s with increasing their competitiveness and take part in global value chains. Therefore, Turkish Government introduced National Clustering Policy Project in 2007, which mainly aims at fostering cooperation and collaboration between SME s within the same horizontal or vertical value chain. In addition to this, through the Declaration on the Development of International Competitiveness (UR-GE) No.2010/8, implemented by the SME and the Clustering Department of Ministry of Economy, it is aimed to promote the local dynamics based on a clustering approach and to initiate a mobilization for export under the leadership of cooperation organizations. The firms registered under such clusters are encouraged to develop export strategies and partnerships with foreign companies. Adana Chamber of Commerce, one of the organizations, which took the advantages of Clustering Policy Project, formed two clusters among its members: Cluster for Furniture Producers and Cluster for Machinery & Machinery Parts Producers. The latter Cluster includes 13 producers and the list of these companies are represented below in alphabetical order: 1- Adana İncihan, 2- Anadolu Talaşlı, 3- Aslanlar Kalıp, 4- Birikim Kimya, 5- Boltes Makina, 6- Ceytech, 7- Çukurova Isıl, 8- Feydaş Makina, 9- Hidrosan Hidrolik, 10- Mak-Tel Makina, 11- Seyhan Zincir, 12- Termal, 13- Turan Makina In 2013, these 13 companies generated combined sales revenue of nearly 30 million USD and the total value of goods & services they exported exceeded 3 million USD.
