2 Modular DC-Substations from Balfour Beatty Rail Fast supply, ready for operation, pre-tested and easily erected. Fast supply Modular rail power substations are fully fitted out and pre-connected at the point of manufacture. They are then transported to the installation site as one or more units depending on the required specifications. This allows even large substations to be transported, connected and commissioned easily and with minimal costs. Modular substations are the ideal solution in all situations. For new installations, speedy assembly without the usual drawn out building period makes the traction power required for safe rail operations available quickly. Reconstruction or modernisation of existing substations may cause a need for a temporary substation, modular substations also being ideal in such situations. Prefabricated concrete containers are recommended if the substation is not intended to be moved to a different location. Movement is however possible, but is more difficult for a concrete container due to increased weight and civil engineering work. Ready for operation The modular substation contains everything required for operation, the standard design includes: - Medium voltage switchgear - Rectifier transformer - Rectifier - DC switchgear - Substation control and RTU connection - Low voltage switchgear with auxiliary transformer - Lighting, heating and ventilation Pre-tested Modular substations are prepared for operation at the point of manufacture. All possible internal connections within the container are made and the equipment is installed and tested. The remaining connections to and from the outside are prepared for quick assembly and the signals tested to the interface terminals. This limits the assembly and commissioning time to a minimum. Through the pre-assembly of components in the workshop, the highest level of quality is guaranteed. Conventional building methods have problems with dirt, difficult site access, weather and environmental conditions and required work tools. These problems do not occur when installing a modular substation. In addition pre-assembly means that all work, adaptations or alterations which must be undertaken can be done with high precision tools. Steel container substations are therefore the preferred choice if the substation is likely to be moved more than once. 02 Delivery of steel conainer substation

3 Erection of concrete container substation Easily erected Due to its compact construction, the space requirements of BBRail modular substations are very small. Substations with higher load requirements can be assembled using several units. The modular substation s exterior can be adapted to match the various local areas. The container can be installed in a variety of locations. In addition to above ground installation, concrete substations can also be located in the side of a hill or mound, partially below ground or completely underground. Concrete container substation as underground substation Modular substations can be installed on pre-existing, load bearing foundations or on a concrete foundation plate. The elevated cable floor in the switchgear room allows easy installation of the conducting cables. The construction of the container guarantees a high level of thermal and noise insulation and allows easy installation even in residential areas. EMC certificates according to 26. BImSchV (*) exist for standard units, other units can be designed accordingly. Short assembly and commissioning times As the equipment and connections of the substation have been pre-installed and pre-tested, the on site assembly and commissioning times can be kept to a minimum. After positioning the container and connecting the external power and signal cables the installation can be made operational within a few hours. (*) 26. 4 Technical Data for the Modular Substation Construction Steel Container - Standard supply includes a welded steel hollow section base frame with outer walls made from single welded steel structural plates, painted in RAL colours. - Alternatively, a galvanised steel hollow section base frame bolted together with aluminium or galvanised steel outer walls, also painted in RAL colours. - Standard cable floor construction. - Pressure relief flap. - Dimensions: ISO standard dimensions or alternatively special dimensions up to 12 m in length, 4 m in width. Multi-Segment concrete container substation Prefabricated concrete container - Prefabricated concrete containers have no exposed metal parts. Due to that they are corrosion resistant. - Joint-free processing of the concrete base unit in a single cast. - Outer metal fittings, facia trims and doors are high strength anodized aluminium and thus corrosion resistant. Optional hot dipped galvanised or painted doors also available. - Optional additional facia to match the surrounding landscape. A roof structure can also be supplied. - Protection against impact and vandalism. - Durable against the weather. - Unaffected by condensation. - Watertight design. - Exterior with either a paint finish in RAL colours. or facia of timber, clinker, slate or natural rock. - Dimensions e.g. 9.6 m x 3.0 m x 3.4 m (L x W x H), other sizes possible on request. 3-kV-substation as steel container solution 04

5 Example steel container substation Rectifier - TracFeed rectifier for easy access and servicing. - Natural air cooling, 6 pulse or 12 pulse design. Medium Voltage Equipment - Rated voltage up to 24 kv, higher voltage levels available on request. - Standard switchgears (air insulated or gas insulated). Transformers - Cast resin or dry-type transformers. - Installed in a separate transformer room, or protected against accidental touching (i.e. by a cover or barrier) and installed in the switchgear room. DC Voltage Equipment - TracFeed LD/HD DC-switchgear. - Rated voltage 750 V or 1500 V. - Circuit breaker panel in withdrawable design. - Panel width 500mm or 800mm. - Fitted with DCP 1x6 control and protection devices. 05

6 Monitoring and control - Control by means of a master PLC and decentralised automation unit in the DC-switchgear (DCP 1x6) and in the medium voltage switchgear (PLC) connected via fieldbus. - Optional local SCADA by means of an industrial PC with TFT colour display. - Optional local SCADA substation remote access possible and DCP 1x6 downloading of fault data using DIALOG4-Server-Software. Remote connection - RTU connections in line with IEC protocol. - Serial connection via fieldbus. - Parallel connection by wiring to terminals. Steel container substation, interior fittings 06
