2 PROGRAM ADMISSION ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN NURSING PROGRAM Central Georgia Technical College Associate of Science in Nursing Program will offer competitive admission into the Nursing Program beginning January, The Nursing Program has limited enrollment and requires specific criteria for admission. Meeting all criteria for admission does not guarantee admission into the ASN program. Admission is based on potential for success and selection is made based on a point system. Applicants are ranked based on grade point average, pre-admission TEAS scores, the number of prerequisites completed and previous work experience. Students preparing to enter the Nursing Program must complete the required prerequisite courses within two attempts. If a student has been unsuccessful in nursing (occupational) courses or clinical courses in another associate/bachelors of science nursing program, they are required to wait two years from the date of the last course failure before applying to Central Georgia Technical College ASN Program. 4 ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN NURSING The Associate of Science in Nursing Program at Central Georgia Technical College has initial approval from the Georgia Board of Nursing. The Nursing Program is a five-semester program including general education courses planned to prepare the graduate nurse to function as a professional nurse in hospitals and other health care facilities. After successful completion of the Associate of Science in Nursing Program, the student will be eligible to apply to test for the state licensing National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to practice as a registered professional nurse. The Georgia Board of Nursing has the right to refuse a graduate nurse a license to any person who has been convicted of moral and/or legal violations as specified in Georgia law. In order to be considered for admission into the ASN program, the student must first complete admission requirements into the college. Admission into the Associate of Science in Nursing Program is a competitive process. Students are selected based on their potential for success by using a point-based criteria devised from grade point average, pre-admission exam scores (TEAS), prerequisite courses obtained, previous college credits earned, and other credentials related to academic and professional success. Selected applicants will be notified by phone and . Students who wish to enroll in the ASN program at Central Georgia Technical College may complete an Application for Admission to the Nursing Program. This application, along with the below listed criteria, must be received by midterm of the Fall Semester in order to be considered for Spring semester (January) admission. 4

5 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS I. Complete the application process at Central Georgia Technical College, along with a nonrefundable application fee. A. Submit proof of age. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. B. Have official transcripts for high school diploma, GED, and any vocational or colleges mailed to Central Georgia Admissions office. II. III. Schedule to take the placement exam (offered in the Testing Center) in order to be admitted to the college. There is no charge for initial administration of the placement exam. (Other placement exam scores may be acceptable, for example, SAT or ACT if taken within the last five years) All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed with a C or better. A. The students GPA will be calculated based on the core classes required for the nursing selection: i. Completion of Composition and Rhetoric (ENGL 1101) ii. Successful completion within the last five (5) years of Quantitative Skills & Reasoning, Math Modeling or College Algebra or higher level MATH (MATH 1103, MATH 1101 or MATH 1111) iii. Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 1101) iv. Successful completion within the last five (5) years of Anatomy & Physiology I with lab (BIOL 2113/BIOL 2113L) B. Science and Math courses must be completed in the last five years. C. Prerequisite courses may be repeated one time only within the past five (5) years. After successful completion of the course(s), the student may apply to the nursing program. D. Unsuccessful attempts in core classes applicable to the nursing program older than five years will not be calculated in the competitive admission GPA. IV. Applicants must have completed the pre-admission exam [the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)]. The pre-admission exam is a multiple-choice assessment composed of several sections measuring basic academic preparedness in reading, math, science, English and language usage. Applicants are encouraged to complete A&P I (BIOL 2113) prior to the examination. Candidates may complete the test twice in a year (365 days). The highest score will be used in selection. Exam scores are valid until a new version is in 5

6 place. Each individual must purchase his or her own testing reservation. The exam will be offered at CGTC campuses. No minimum score required. V. Transfer students will be evaluated based on requirements as stated. To receive transfer credit for competitive selection, final transcripts must be received in the registrar s office by October 11, 2016 for Spring 2017 competitive selection. 6

7 ADDITIONAL NURSING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS I. Students must be at least 18 years of age at time of application II. III. IV. All students must be accepted into the Nursing Program before entry into the nursing/rnsg courses. Students are required to complete all health forms and they must be signed by a medical practitioner prior to clinical rotations. Students must keep all health requirements current during the duration of the Nursing Program. Appendix A: Health Forms Students are expected to assume responsibility for their own health in the event of an illness, accident, or exposure to a communicable disease. Health insurance is strongly recommended prior to entry into the program. Professional liability insurance is also required and is included in tuition each semester. V. Students must successfully complete a BLS for Healthcare Provider course (American Heart Association) offered in RNSG 1032 Foundations of Nursing and maintain the currency throughout the duration of the program. VI. VII. VIII. Students must maintain a grade of C or greater in all nursing courses in order to remain in the program. Students who are unsuccessful in more than one nursing course are ineligible to remain in the program and will result in dismissal from the program. Students who fail a course must repeat the nursing and clinical component of the course concurrently. A nursing course may only be repeated once. Students must complete all required core classes by the last semester of the Nursing Program. Students must uphold professional and ethical standards at all times in accordance with the CGTC Code of Conduct. 7

Complete the CGTC ASN Progression Form (Application) and Healthcare Experience Form A. Students will be considered for selection if his/her name is on the list at the campus of their choice. The Progression form must be submitted and all requirements for selection (except currently enrolled CGTC courses) must be completed and official documents submitted (including all items listed on the Admission Requirements Checklist) by October 11, 2016 to be considered for Spring 2017 selection. In the event that the student is not selected for the program and wishes to be considered for the next semester selection, it is the student s responsibility to ensure that his/her application remains active by submitting a progression form/application again and that all required course grades and timeframes are still applicable. A. To submit a Progression Form, go to the CGTC Home page Current Students Student Affairs Registrar Progression Form Request log in to your BannerWeb account. This will automatically open the form. You will then fill in the form and submit it electronically. Please make sure you print a copy of the form for your records. B. To submit a Healthcare Experience Form, complete the form in this packet and submit electronically to healthselection@centralgatech.edu. 10 SELECTION CRITERIA Upon successful completion of the required core courses and having taken the TEAS exam, students will be considered for selection into the ASN program based on the following criteria: 1. GPA will be calculated according to the following guidelines: a. Only courses taken within the required timeframe will be calculated in the GPA. b. Scoring: GPA x 100 plus highest TEAS score. c. In the case of multiple attempts at a course(s) to achieve the required course grade or improve a grade, only the two most recent attempts will be calculated in the GPA. In the event that a student previously attempted coursework at institutions other than CGTC, official transcripts will be evaluated to include the two most recent attempts, and grades from any applicable coursework will be calculated in the GPA accordingly. 2. Healthcare Experience is scored based on the type and amount of previous healthcare experience. In the case of multiple levels of healthcare experience, points will be awarded only for the highest experience level. Points are awarded according to the following guidelines Practical Nursing (current licensure): 10 points Military Medical Experience (at least one year or more): 10 points Paramedic, Cardiovascular Technologist, Radiology Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, and/or Physical Therapy Assistant, Orthopedic Technology, Clinical Lab Technology, Dental Hygiene (current certification/licensure): 5 points Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Surgical Technician, and Certified Pharmacy Technician: 3 points No prior experience: 0 points ***Documentation will need to be included regarding certification and/or licensure this includes, but is not limited to copy of license, certification, and/or military transcript.
